Diva Dirt presents its fourth annual Writers’ Choice Awards, as decided by the Diva Dirt team. As we come to the end of 2014, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice trophies.
NXT Diva of the Year: Charlotte
As Paige ascended to the main roster this year, Charlotte took her place atop the NXT Divas division. Throughout the course of 2014, she’s had her fair share of challengers for the throne, but she’s bested them all in contests that blow away the best of what the WWE’s Divas have to offer.
No one has benefitted more from NXT’s investment in the Divas than Charlotte. Remember those three show-stopping matches that have inspired cries of “Why can’t we see this on the main roster?” Charlotte is the common denominator between them, wrestling three vastly different women and putting on matches that were just as diverse.
If NXT is the future, Charlotte is the female face of it.
She’s long since proven that she’s more than Ric Flair‘s daughter. Sure, she’s got his skill and ability to bust out a “WOOO!”, but her performances this year have set her up as wholly her own person, capable of carrying on the Flair legacy single-handedly while carving out her own path.
Her leap to the main roster may be imminent, and she may soon see much fewer opportunities for 15+ minute matches and top rope Natural Selections, but over the course of three critically acclaimed live NXT specials, Charlotte has tasted more of that NXT magic than any other Diva. Lucky doesn’t cover it.
NXT is becoming more and more the place to go for fantastic, exciting wrestling. Soon enough, there will be another Diva atop the division, wrestling in 15 minute matches on live NXT specials. But Charlotte will always be the first Diva to feel the full benefits of the modern NXT: the world class facilities, the fans’ enthusiasm, the live showcases that have that Pay-Per-View feel. She was born and raised, so to speak, in this environment, the first Diva to be a true NXT product.
Charlotte embodies the promise and excitement that fans feel about NXT: she’s bursting with potential, constantly meeting her challenges and exceeding expectations. Genetically superior or not, Charlotte has *it*, and she’s undeniably destined for greatness, if you don’t consider her 2014 performances greatness in themselves.
And, at the end of the day, wrestling in the sixth greatest match of the year is nothing to sneeze at, either.
