WWE is reportedly developing ideas for their next women’s pay-per-view after the massive success of Evolution. One of the ideas on the table, according to the Wrestling Observer, could be the inaugural Queen of the Ring tournament.
Evolution was a huge step forward for women’s wrestling, and a big win for the company. The pay-per-view received rave reviews and helped burnish the image that WWE has been courting in recent years as a progressive, modern company. Dave Meltzer awarded 4.75 stars to the first-ever last-woman-standing match, between Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch, the highest rating he’s ever given to a women’s match in WWE.
Rumors suggest WWE plan to hold at least one women’s pay-per-view on an annual basis, with various ideas floating around creative. Queen of the Ring stands out as a strong contender, given the format can be easily repeated in the future. WWE held the King of the Ring tournament almost annually between 1985 and 2002, and four further times since. The most recent tournament, won by Bad News Barrett in 2015, as well as the previous two in 2008 and 2010, were dual-branded.
WWE creative have found themselves in a bit of a bind lately, with three inter-brand feuds at the top of the women’s division. Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey continue to take shots at each other on social media after the collapse of their scheduled match at Survivor Series. Lynch correctly blames Nia Jax for the legit injury that took her out of that match and surely wants to exact some revenge. Meanwhile, Ronda seeks vengeance of her own against Charlotte Flair for the vicious beat-down Flair delivered to end their Survivor Series match in a disqualification. Queen of the Ring may provide the perfect stage to play out these inter-brand conflicts.
