Women to main event WrestleMania for the first time ever

WWE confirmed WrestleMania 35 will feature the first-ever women’s main event. The company has been alluding to this for months, but they made an official announcement this morning via WWE.com.

The triple-threat match for the Raw Women’s Championship, featuring Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch, will headline “The Showcase of the Immortals” on Apr. 7.

At WrestleMania 32 in 2016, WWE re-branded the Divas Division the Women’s Division. That night, Hall of Famer, Lita, surprised fans with the unveiling of what would become the Raw Women’s Championship. Giving the fans an opportunity to see that very title defended in the main event three years later feels like the natural progression from that moment.

Since 2015, the women’s division has boasted many first-ever matches, but this is a landmark decision many believed was further away, if not impossible. Some years, the women didn’t get a spot on the card. In some cases, scheduled women’s matches were left off at the last minute because other matches ran over.

WWE still has some work to do, but putting women in the main event of their biggest pay-per-view of the year speaks volumes.
