Aja Smith has made her referee debut at an NXT live event on Friday in Ocala, Fla. Smith, formerly known by the ring name Aja Perera, signed with the company earlier this month. Her tryout took place in December.
She officiated a match between Taynara and Shotzi Blackheart. Smith makes history in this position as she is the first female African American referee in WWE’s history.
Smith is best known for her work in the indies as an in-ring talent. SHINE Wrestling was where she made a big splash becoming their first ever African American tag team champions along with Big Swole. She is also a former Shine Nova Champion.
