It’s official, Sasha Banks will be defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Bianca Belair in the main event of Night One at WrestleMania.
As of Monday’s RAW, it was believed that the women would not get the main event spot but as of yesterday speculation started to stir. First, there was Banks who started getting emotional in an interview where she said she and Belair are headlining the event. Next, Stephanie McMahon confirmed that they were headlining the event in a podcast. Finally, WWE made the announcement moments ago on social media.
Banks & Belair are set to become only two of five women to have ever main evented on The Grandest Stage of Them All. At WrestleMania 35, two years ago, Becky Lynch became a double champion as she defeated Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey to become both the RAW and SmackDown Women’s Champion. Now we have the second main event which is historical in its own right.
Since the Royal Rumble in January when Belair outlasted 29 other women to earn her WrestleMania spot many had a feeling that this could be something big. Once Belair chose Banks as her opponent with the SmackDown Women’s Title on the line it marked the first time two African-American women would be in a championship match at WrestleMania. Now they will be the first to main event the show as well.
Banks tries to keep her title tight whereas Belair tries to grab her first gold with the company this Saturday, April 10. The show starts at 8 p.m. EST (U.S.).
