WWE Hall of Famer Lita dropped the bombshell that she almost quit WWE in 2005 due to the “love triangle” angle.
Lita was a guest on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions and spoke candidly about the controversial angle with Edge and Matt Hardy.
In 2005 Matt Hardy revealed that Lita and Edge were legitimately having an affair behind his back. WWE fired Hardy, which led to severe fan backlash on Lita. WWE then turned the real-life fallout into an angle.
Looking back through Lita’s career, Paquette asked how she dealt with all the sh*t she got for her relationships. Lita stated that she still gets comments on her past relationships via social media and called out the double standards.
Here’s what Lita had to say;
“My relationships are commented on, on a regular basis on my Instagram still. But meanwhile, all of the men involved, you know and I mean anything not controversial like being with Punk, or Edge, or Matt it’s like I guarantee you they don’t get asked about it, I know they don’t get asked about it because they’re dudes and its that double standard thing. I think that’s at this point the problem, like what I hold on to, feeling like that double standard.”
Lita continued;
“It was not easy, I mean, for sure, I almost quit amongst the whole love triangle angle. But at that point, not only was it so hard it was also out of shame. I wasn’t proud on the way I conducted myself and yes, if I got to do it over again, I absolutely would’ve handled myself different, but I didn’t.
So I was very much like ‘make the bed, you lie in it’ you know, and at that point, I was just like ‘I deserve all of these terrible things that everyone is saying to me. You deserve not wanting to wake up every morning.’ So that was really difficult, and it was really difficult to also, as time passed, let myself off the hook and be like ‘the only you can move forward with your life, sure you learn from your mistakes, and you keep going, but you have to forgive yourself.”
Lita revolutionised women’s wrestling when she burst onto the scene. Firstly, Essa Rios’ valet and then as a member of ‘Team Extreme’ with the Hardy Boyz. Her cool and edgy style made her stand out, and she became an instant hit with the fans.
During her run with the company, Lita had many memorable feuds with Trish Stratus and Mickie James. Lita captured the WWE Women’s Championship four times. She is also credited by the likes of Bayley, AJ Lee and Paige for inspiring them to get into wrestling.
Lita left WWE in 2006 and returned for special appearances in 2007, 2010 and 2012. In 2014 she was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. In 2014 she unveiled the new WWE Women’s Championship after the company retired the Divas Championship.
Lita was a surprise entrant in the first women’s Royal Rumble and teamed with Trish Stratus to take on Mickie James and Alisha Fox at Evolution.
