Diva Dirt presents its third annual Writers’ Choice Awards, the awards that celebrate the year in women’s wrestling, as decided by the editors and contributors of Diva Dirt. The Diva Dirt team has watched hundreds of episode of wrestling television this year, followed a countless number of wrestlers and reviewed tons of matches. Now, as we come to the end of 2013, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice trophies.
Best Promotion: SHINE Wrestling
For the second year in a row, SHINE Wrestling has outdone the rest, remaining the most accessible and consistent source for indy women’s wrestling in 2013.
In their second year of existence, the promotion avoided the dreaded “sophomore slump”, putting on ten live iPPV events over the last twelve months and impressing each and every time. In July, they crowned the first SHINE Champion in the culmination of an exciting tournament that featured some of the best women’s wrestlers on the scene today. They also produced four ‘Indy Match of the Year’ candidates in the Diva Dirt Fan Awards.
No longer SHIMMER’s kid sister, SHINE has broken out on its own, utilizing the iPPV format to deliver shows straight to the people with a regularity never before seen in the women’s wrestling world.
This allowed SHINE to weave exciting storylines, showcase slow-burning feuds and build up talent and stables like never before. Now, fans are able to see talent like Kharma, Mercedes Martinez and Jessicka Havok compete live up to ten times a year from the comfort of their own homes. This was never possible before SHINE.
If there’s any way for women’s wrestling to get underneath the shadow of men’s wrestling and stand on its own, SHINE has the formula. By making their product easy to access and delivering it with the regularity of a WWE PPV, they’re well on their way to becoming the indy women’s wrestling fan’s answer to WWE or TNA.
Stay tuned for more Writers’ Choice Award reveals over the next few days.
