WWE took to Twitter yesterday in order to garner up a discussion on who will be next in line for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Asking who will “step up” has stirred up many responses by both fans and wrestlers. For the upcoming Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, neither main roster champion has a title match booked on the card yet.
Asuka is the current SmackDown Women’s Champion. She won the title in a triple threat match at December’s TLC pay-per-view against Charlotte Flair and then-champion Becky Lynch. Since then, Asuka successfully defended her title against Lynch at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. She has not been seen since her victory nearly two weeks ago.
Currently, the biggest hype heading into the next pay-per-view event is the inaugural Women’s Tag Team Championship match. As a result of this, Asuka is currently left without an opponent. Mandy Rose quickly stepped up to throw her name in the ring by taking to her Twitter account.
Declaring herself as the “hottest thing” on SmackDown Live currently, she believes she is next in line for a title opportunity. Lately, Rose has been picking up tag team victories alongside her tag team partner, Sonya Deville. For what it is worth, she has a singles victory over Naomi, who is a former champion. Both Rose and Deville will be entering the Elimination Chamber and have a chance at becoming the Women’s Tag Team Champions. If they fall short, Rose could potentially be Asuka’s next opponent.
Asuka was quick to respond to Rose’s challenge without uttering a single word.
Other than Rose, Lacey Evans also wants to take on the Empress of Tomorrow. She explains via her Twitter that she will be ready once she gets “catering under control.” Evans was the first entrant in the Women’s Rumble match lasting nearly 30 minutes. She, along with Nikki Cross, have officially made their way to the main roster. Neither woman has been assigned to a specific brand, which could work in Evans’ favor.
Asuka could very well defend her title next against Rose or Evans. However, Lynch and Flair are still viable options. Lynch has had a lot on her plate in regards to the McMahon family over the past two weeks. Lynch, after her Royal Rumble win, will face off against Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania. She still has time to face Asuka prior to that event in April.
Flair could potentially be added to the WrestleMania match as rumored. Whether Flair is added to that match or not, she could yet again go after the top prize on the SmackDown brand.
Check back with Diva Dirt to see who will end up being the next number one contender for Asuka’s title.
