Awesome Kong returned to the ring in May to AEW’s Double or Nothing debut pay-per-view. This was her first time stepping back in the ring since 2016.
She plays Tammé “The Welfare Queen” Dawson on Netflix’s hit show GLOW so she hasn’t been completely out of the spotlight. Regardless of that fact, Kong still felt nervous when she returned to the ring last month.
Kong recently spoke to Scott Fishman of TV Insider where she commented on feeling forgotten prior to her return. She had the following to say:
“I was worried that people had forgotten about me because it had been forever and a day since I had appeared on TV as a wrestler in Kong’s gear and her braids and everything,” she recalled. “I was extremely worried about it.”
She then went into more details of how nervous she was even up until the moment she came out for her match. The return of Kong was a surprise to many as she and AEW kept a tight lip. She was added to the triple threat match making it a four-way. She wanted everything to go perfect.
It wasn’t until WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page gave her a bit of wisdom that pushed that negative energy aside and unleashed Kong. She had the following to say about that exchange:
“I mean he squared me up shoulder-to-shoulder. He looked me dead in the eye with his piercing blue eyes and gave me this pep talk about positive thinking,” Kong said. “How I should read his book, and how I am who I am, and I know who I am. He told me I was going to go out there and kill it. It was exactly what I needed. This was not even three or four minutes before I walked out there. I was like, ‘Yes!’ This is what I needed to summon Kong. She is finally here.”
Kong is considering herself as a free agent at this time. She wanted to be a part of the first event for AEW because she believes in its product.
