Backstage News On Royal Rumble Match Planning

WWE’s Royal Rumble event is quickly approaching as it will take place one week from Saturday – Jan. 28. This event will include the sixth Royal Rumble match for the women as they started to have their own match in 2018.

According to a recent report from Fightful Select, WWE had a set of meetings to discuss the upcoming Rumble match. Fightful has been told that while several veterans have contacted WWE about making Rumble appearances, WWE was said to have been leaning out of that in some cases in favor of what they are calling “non-traditional surprises.” Unsure of what that meant, creative was soliciting pitches for such a thing. WWE was adamant last year in leaning out of NXT names appearing in the Rumble match.

Fightful has also been told that as of last week, former SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey wasn’t planned for the Royal Rumble event, at the time she lost the title, which can always change. Until December, Rousey was scheduled for a singles match for the event.

In addition, WWE is very confident in their women’s roster as is with the hires and call-ups over the last year and how it would play into the Royal Rumble match. Whereas last year, WWE had to call in numerous veterans because mass releases led them with a small roster. This year’s Rumble match will be produced by TJ Wilson with the help of Jason Cade. Last year, Wilson wasn’t around and WWE had to bring in Fit Finlay to help.

It was also confirmed on this past Monday’s Raw that Alexa Bliss will be challenging Bianca Belair for the Raw Women’s Championship. At the time of this writing, a plan for the SmackDown Women’s Championship has not been confirmed but Charlotte Flair has been feuding with Sonya Deville since winning the gold in her return.

So far confirmed for the Royal Rumble match –

  1. Liv Morgan
  2. Candice LeRae
  3. Rhea Ripley
  4. Raquel Rodriguez

Diva Dirt will post any other Royal Rumble news up to and through the event. Don’t forget to join the Royal Rumble Discussion Post on Jan. 28 to chat about the event!
