The Raw team of Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection (Sasha Banks and Bayley) have won the first WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.
During tonight’s pay-per-view, WWE Elimination Chamber, three tag teams from Raw and three tag teams from SmackDown competed in a traditional Elimination Chamber match to determine the winner of the historical titles.
Created by Triple H and introduced by Eric Bischoff, the Elimination Chamber match traditionally happens within a chain-link circular structure. Pods exist in the corner of the structure, which holds four tag teams, with two teams starting the match. The pods release teams at random in five minute intervals, until all pods are opened. Teams are eliminated by pinfall or submission, and there are no disqualifications.
The first two teams to start the match were Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection (Sasha Banks and Bayley) and Fire ‘N’ Desire (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville), as determined previously by triple-threat tag team matches.
The remaining four teams were released in the following order: Riott Squad (Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan), The IIconics, Fabulous Glow (Carmella and Naomi), and Irresistible Force (Nia Jax and Tamina).
The five teams that did not win the the match were eliminated in the following order: Fabulous Glow was eliminated by the IIconics, IIconics were taken out by Irresistible Force, the Riott Squad were removed by Irresistible Force, but Irresistible Force was pinned by all four women remaining (Deville, Rose, Bayley, Banks). Finally, Sonya was given the Bank Statement by Sasha Banks, eliminating Fire ‘N’ Desire, to give Banks and Bayley the win.
It was announced on Christmas Eve by Vince McMahon that women’s tag team titles would be coming in 2019. Shortly after, on Jan. 14, Alexa Bliss announced on an episode of A Moment of Bliss, that the first title match would be held at Elimination Chamber. Fans were excited to see WWE move forward with their promise to give fans what they want, keeping WWE “fresh”.
The match went over 34 minutes, and featured some serious physical moves by all teams involved. Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection were the favorite to win, solidified by the crowd chanting “You deserve it!” while Banks and Bayley teared up over their win. Banks told a roaring crowd that she didn’t win the titles just for Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection, but for the whole women’s division.
