Doudrop is set for the biggest match of her career in WWE as she goes against Becky Lynch at the upcoming Royal Rumble event. They will be battling for the Raw Women’s Championship. In NXT UK, Doudrop had several title matches for the NXT UK Women’s Title but was never able to capture the top prize.
Doudrop spoke with Alex McCarthy of talkSPORTS where she explains her upcoming match against Lynch is one that is 15 years in the making.
“I don’t know if people know this, but I’ve been waiting 15 years for this match. Way back when I first started training in a little warehouse in Linwood, Scotland, there really wasn’t many experienced girls in the UK wrestling scene at all. There was me, Nikki Storm – who had also just started out – down in England we had Mischief and Erin Angel, and then over in Ireland, we had Miss Rebecca Knox.”
Doudrop continues, “We were very aware of Becky at the time. Even back then she was at the top of her game. She was the girl our trainers were trying to get in and have matches with us so we could learn from her, get some kind of experience. But, sadly, unbeknownst to us at the time, she was just packing up things there to move over to the U.S. We made efforts to get her over but it just didn’t work out.
So 15 long years later, here we are. It’s one big ass circle to go in, but we got there [laughs].”
During the interview, she also talks about her recent feud with Bianca Belair, that she would love to face Beth Phoenix, and if there were plans for her to go to the NXT US brand instead of straight to the main roster.
“When I first got to NXT UK, it was always within mind that when we’re ready for you, you’ll be coming over to NXT in the States. I had the VISA all set up for it and everything, that’s why I was able to come and do World’s Collide and things like that, so it was a matter of time I think, more than anything.
But, the big man [Vince McMahon] had some other ideas. But things aren’t as A, B, C as they used to be. We’ve got Grayson [Waller] and AJ Styles going into a little thing and honestly, I think all bets are off.
Maybe I’ll show up and take Mandy [Rose]’s title off her? Who knows what could happen. I know I’ve got a couple of friends in NXT who are absolutely giddy that Beth is back and they’re hoping she visits NXT as well. I’d love to see that too, I’d buy a ticket to see that!”
It was a Triple Threat match against Belair and Liv Morgan that Doudrop won in order to face Lynch at Royal Rumble. Their match takes place one week from today on Jan. 29.
