Tasha Steelz cites NXT stars as mentors

In another Diva Dirt Exclusive, Gerry Strauss speaks to up and comer Tasha Steelz on The Curtain Call. Hailing from New Jersey, Steelz speaks to Strauss about her love for wrestling while growing up. She started training freshly out of high school.

She dives into her first training experience and the transition to the Team Adams Professional Wrestling Academy. Here she trained with Damian Adams and formed a close bond with Deonna Purrazzo and Karen Q. She considers Adams as a highly underrated trainer that many people sleep on.

Since then both Purrazzo and Karen have ventured through Ring of Honor and now find themselves in WWE’s NXT brand. Strauss asked Steelz who she has learned the most from inside the ring. She had the following to say:

“This is a no brainer answer. It has to be Deonna and Karen. It’s just the fact that I learned so much from them and their experiences especially Deonna because she was just doing it way longer than Karen and I. Karen can vouch for this as well,” she said.

She continues, “Karen trained and traveled with Deonna and then when I came in I trained and I traveled with them. We just did so much and before I even started doing shows I would travel with the girls and I would go to the shows that they were on. I would just watch how they would work a crowd and how they would work a match. What they would do and how they would call a match. How people react to them and how they would react to people. Just getting inside their head of what to do as far as a woman’s perspective.”

Steelz also talks about continuing to work and continue to climb the ladder. She mentions at the beginning of our interview that she recently worked a crowd of 3,000 people. This was her largest crowd to date and she is preparing for even more.

Towards the end of the interview, she comments on the current status of women’s wrestling after Strauss asks where she thinks women’s wrestling is heading.

“Oh, I mean women’s wrestling is kicking ass. It is doing way better than men’s I am sorry to say, but we are definitely proving ourselves a lot. It’s a huge, huge change from back in the attitude era where it was just bra and pantie matches and paddle on a pole matches and lingerie matches and those things.”

She continues with how much women’s wrestling is affecting other women outside of the sport.

“So it is actually us as athletes being in the ring and you just see athletes from everywhere. You see former MMA stars, boxers, former track stars, Olympians, softball players, basketball players, you see so many women from different aspects coming into wrestling and wanting to do what we do. We are just changing the game.”

Steelz recently won a Four Corner Survival match at Ring of Honor’s Best in the World pay-per-view. The match also included Jenny Rose, Angelina Love, and Stella Grey.
