2. The Knockouts had the first Women’s Ladder Match for a Title Match Contract on a PPV.
On June 27th, 2017, WWE had its ‘First Ever’ Money In The Bank Ladder match. Natalya, Tamina, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and eventual winner Carmella all competed to earn the coveted briefcase for the future shot at the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Now while the Money In The Bank is essentially a WWE exclusive, the Makeover Battle Royal that took place on Sacrifice in 2008 was essentially the same concept… with a bit more added to it. The match started as a Battle Royal, with the last 2 Knockouts taking part in a Ladder Match to win an Opportunity at the TNA Knockouts Championship. Multiple women + Ladder + Future Title shot… it counts!
However, in classic TNA style, there was a bit more to it – the twist being that the loser of the ladder match would also get her head shaved. Oh and to add to that, Gail Kim had won immunity the week before on Impact so if she got to the final 2 and lost the ladder match, then the Knockout who was last eliminated from the battle royal would get her head shaved… make sense? Welcome to TNA booking!
The final three came down to hated Mean Girl Angelina Love, newly turned face Roxxi LaVeaux and super face Gail Kim. So if Gail wins, Roxxi’s head gets shaved… and if Roxxi wins, then Angelina gets her head shaved. So surely we would see Roxxi getting the face push she deserved and hated heel Angelina getting her head shaved right?
Nope! Much like how WWE’s Women’s Money In the Bank ended in controversy with James Ellsworth grabbing the case for Carmella, the Sacrifice match did too. Angelina threw Roxxi off the ladder, giving Gail enough time to climb up and win the contract. Gail got a ‘WTF’ reaction and poor Roxxi ended up bleeding with no title match contract and no hair. Hopefully one day, we’ll get a Ladder match result that we all agree with!
