This week’s Flashback Friday Match is Mickie James defending the WWE Women’s Championship against Victoria. The bout took place at the start of 2007 at the New Year’s Revolution pay-per-view.
Following a Battle Royal win just months prior to this match, Victoria received a small push leading up to this match. During that Diva Battle Royal on an episode of Raw in November, Victoria’s win garnered attention from her injuring the nose of Candice Michelle after a kick to the face – which required surgery.
Victoria’s gimmick included carrying around a clipboard with a check list ever since the injury to Candice Michelle. On that list, she would have a list of names that she defeated leading up to this championship match. She defeated Mickie James in a non-title match which garnered her this championship opportunity.
After a hurricanrana took Victoria out to the ring apron, James bumped her to the ringside floor. Melina would show up to help up Victoria which resulted in James taking out Melina before getting Victoria back in the ring.
James went for the DDT, but Melina grabbed at her feet causing a distraction. Victoria went for the Widows Peak but James rolled through for a near fall. Meanwhile, on the outside, Candice Michelle made her return from injury alongside Maria as they attacked Melina. Victoria went for a scoop slam but James countered and was able to get the three count to retain her championship.
Post-match, James, Candice, and Maria celebrated over top of a fallen Victoria as Melina seethed from ringside.
Victoria would get a rematch a full week later but would once again come up short. Despite Victoria’s career in WWE lasting two more years until 2009, this would be her last championship match on WWE programming.
