Happy Halloween! We’re celebrating our eighth anniversary of dreaming up Halloween costumes for the women of wrestling. This year, we’ll be splitting up the women into three categories: NXT, TNA/Lucha Underground and WWE.
But before you see this year’s picks, be sure to catch up on the past seven years of this feature:
- 2008
- 2009: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
- 2010: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
- 2011: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
- 2012: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
- 2013: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
- 2014: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
For the final part of our feature, we have the WWE Divas:
Charlotte as Furiosa, with Amanda, Becky Lynch, Cameron, Natalya & Rosa Mendes as the Brides from Mad Max: Fury Road
No matter where your allegiances lie, you have to acknowledge that holding the Divas Championship makes Charlotte the torchbearer for the Diva Revolution. After kicking off the Revolution alongside Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks, she swiftly climbed the ranks to win the coveted title and put Nikki Bella‘s record-breaking reign – a reign that, some say, caused stagnation in the division – to an end. Whether she’ll actually guide the division to a new era of greatness has yet to be seen, but maybe dressing as Furiosa, the ultimate savior of civilization in Mad Max: Fury Road, can light some extra fire under her. In her journey, she can help liberate the keys to the future: the Brides. Or, as you may know them, the brave Toast (Cameron), the very pregnant Splendid (Rosa), the quirky Dag (Natalya), the timid Cheedo (Amanda) and the resourceful Capable (Becky).
Eden as Stardust
We know that Eden helps her husband Stardust apply his signature face paint, so it stands to reason that she’d be able to duplicate the look on herself. We’d like to see Eden break out of the restrictive ring announcer role a bit, and acknowledging her real life connection to Stardust on screen could accomplish that. You know, as long as it doesn’t result in an Evening Gown/Tuxedo match.
JoJo as Tip from Home
Since debuting as part of the cast of Total Divas, JoJo has always given off the vibe of a “kid sister”. Though she’d probably like to break out of that box eventually, we can’t help but picture her as Tip, the cute girl hero of Home. With colorful layers, red Converse sneakers and an Oh plush to carry around, she’d sport the cutest costume a Diva’s ever worn, hands down.
Lana as Ava from Ex Machina
We’re not saying Lana’s an AI experiment, but her abrupt about-face in her feud with Rusev is cause for concern. After breaking out of her constrictive, cold persona, she’s returned to the side of Mother Russia, causing us to wonder which is the real Lana: the carefree one or the calculating one? No matter how the WWE writes her, though, Lana excels at it all, turning on a dime like she was programmed to do it. Lana could poke fun at her shifting allegiances by dressing as Ava, the android from Ex Machina. We won’t spoil the movie for you, but its overarching theme could be used as argument for allowing Lana to make her own choices, whether or not they please the WWE Universe.
Lilian Garcia as The Countess from American Horror Story: Hotel
A singer showing off her dark side? That sounds like a role tailor made for the WWE’s veteran songstress. We’d love to see Lilian break out of her “good girl” role by taking on the persona of Lady Gaga’s The Countess from American Horror Story: Hotel, with all the glamour, over-the-top drama and – yes – blood that comes with it. Just be careful where you point that claw, Lilian.
Paige as Scarlet Witch from Avengers: Age of Ultron
Wanda Maximoff, AKA the Scarlet Witch, certainly made a mark in Avengers: Age of Ultron, going from villain to a member of the Avengers over the course of the movie. Paige is known for her short-lived friendships, but maybe she could use Wanda’s telekinetic powers to keep a few Divas by her side for longer than a few months. Paige has the look for the role, too, with her propensity for dark makeup and leather clothes. Given Paige’s long track record of volatility, it’s probably a good thing that style is the only thing these two women have in common.
Renee Young as Sally Jesse Raphael
You know we had to do it. After Paige namedropped the American talk show legend last week to fend off Renee’s questions, it was hard to choose any other costume for Renee. We’re sure Renee would be game for it, too, with her razor sharp wit. Give her a short wig and wardrobe in that oh-so-80s style, Sally’s trademark giant red glasses and a WWE microphone worthy of Mean Gene Okerlund, and voila: complete leeway for Renee to ask all the probing questions her heart desires.
Sara Lee as Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens
As is the case with much of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not much is known about Rey, a scavenger on the world of Jakku. Given the history of Star Wards, though, she’s got “incredible destiny” written all over her. Some may doubt that Sara Lee, as the female winner of the latest season of Tough Enough, is the “next big thing”, but she’s a classic underdog if we’ve ever seen one. Granted, she probably won’t save the galaxy, but she’s certainly got a bright future ahead of her, and channeling another young woman on the cusp of greatness couldn’t hurt.
Stephanie McMahon as Ronda Rousey
Sure, the feud between Stephanie and Ronda has been stagnant ever since their headline-grabbing encounter at WrestleMania 31, but there’s always hope that it will be resurrected in the future, especially if Ronda wants to win the Divas Title. It’s not in the cards for WrestleMania 32, though, so Stephanie would do well to keep the heat alive in the meantime, and pulling the classic “dress as your enemy” card could do the trick. Hell, she’s got the muscles for it. It would also give her an excuse to practice her armbar, because let’s face it: if she ever squares off with Ronda, she’ll need to be very well acquainted with that particular move.
Summer Rae as Lana during her Dolph Ziggler phase
Someone needs to make use of that airbrushed denim, right? Now that both Summer and Lana have moved on to other men, it would be a perfectly heelish move for Summer to mock Dolph for his short-lived relationship with Lana. It would also be a fantastic way to acknowledge the sharp, rather unexpected turn their storyline took after Lana and Rusev‘s real life engagement was announced on TMZ. Clearly, things weren’t meant to resolve themselves so quickly. Summer has shown a propensity for adopting Lana’s abandoned styles, too, so maybe this isn’t exactly outside the realm of possibility…
Naomi, Sasha Banks & Tamina Snuka as the Sand Snakes from Game of Thrones
The Sand Snakes, Game of Thrones‘s trio of half-sisters hell bent on revenge, were by and large a let down when adapted from book to screen, partially due to their lack of edge, spending much of their screen time fighting poorly and sitting in jail cells. Luckily, Team B.A.D. has edge in spades. With Tamina as hard-nosed Obara, Naomi as the skilled Nymeria and Sasha as the youngest of the trio, Tyene, some much-needed venom would be injected into the Sand Snakes, finally making them worthy of their name.
Alicia Fox, Brie & Nikki Bella as The Chanels from Scream Queens
Team Bella hasn’t shown any signs of splitting up, but of all the Diva Revolution trios, theirs has always had the greatest air of cliqueyness to it. Instead of floundering in the ever-changing heel/face landscape, Alicia, Brie and Nikki could embrace their sense of superiority by dressing as the pink-clad Chanels from Scream Quens. Nikki, the queen bee, would be the original Chanel; Brie, with her affinity for headbands, would be Chanel #3; Alicia, ever the wild card, would be the geek-turned-chic Chanel #6. This would also serve as a heartwarming reminder that, as vicious as the Divas division can be, these ladies will never have to contend with a serial killer.
