The evolution of Kelly Kelly from glorified ECW stripper/exhibitionist to WWE Divas Champion is one of the most compelling character evolutions the WWE has ever put together. Her looks were enough to draw your attention, but it was her willingness to constantly prove herself time and time again that made her memorable. Who will ever forget when a teenage Kelly took a Singapore cane to the head via the Sandman? What about all the times she was run over in matches by Divas much better than her?
Kelly went on to form Extreme Exposé, work storylines with the likes of Randy Orton, The Miz and Kane, and be the perfect opponent for girls like Beth Phoenix. She would continue to get better in the ring and become the first Diva to ever defend the World Heavyweight Championship (and win the match no less) when she teamed with the champ, Edge, to take on Michelle McCool, Layla and Dolph Ziggler. She was magic in that match, as well as in the aftermath, and that summer we all watched as Kelly finally became the Divas Champion.
She was the perfect face for the title at the time, but I’ll be honest and say that the company dropped the ball with Kelly’s reign. Her reign wasn’t memorable, but despite all that, I still consider Kelly Kelly my favorite Divas Champion of all time. I’ll never stop wondering about what could have been…
