A Triple Threat match for the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam was a wild ride as the title changed hands twice.
Heading into the event we had Asuka as the champion defending her gold against both Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair. All three women who are no strangers to championships. Flair heading into the match with a SummerSlam 5-0 record and an expert at Triple Threats. Belair seeking retribution against Asuka who is the woman who ended her historical 419 day reign. Asuka certainly had her work cut out for her.
The match certainly had its moments with a lot of double pin and double submission attempts. Belair favored her knee throughout the match up and would go done and possibly out in the back half. Flair had lifted Belair over the top rope and she came crashing down on the steel steps. As she screamed in pain medical came out to try and help her to the back. This left Flair and Asuka to go one-on-one.
Belair wouldn’t get too far up the long ramp before limping back to the ring as Flair had Asuka in the Figure Eight. Belair would go to the top and deliver a 450 splash to break up the submission. Eventually, Belair would seize her moment after Asuka misted Flair in the face which allowed the EST to roll up The Empress for the win.
It wouldn’t be a long celebration as Ms. Money in the Bank IYO SKY with Bayley would rush down the ramp. Bayley took out both Asuka and Flair who were at the bottom of the ramp with the briefcase. Then the briefcase was driven into the already injured knee of Belair.
SKY told the official she was cashing in as she climbed to the top. After delivering the Over the Moonsault, SKY would pin Belair to become champion.
The celebration ensued as Dakota Kai joined her fellow Damage CTRL members in the ring. This signifies one year as a stable and one year later a member holds singles gold.
There had been reports earlier in the night that Kairi Sane has reportedly signed back with WWE. It is said that her return is “imminent” but she did not return at SummerSlam. However, Michael Cole may have hinted to it on commentary as he stated SKY has come all the way from STARDOM to now WWE Women’s Champion.
Also at SummerSlam, Ronda Rousey faced Shayna Baszler in an MMA Rules match. The match could only be won via knockout, pass out, or submission. The match was what it was, but with it being MMA Rules it didn’t follow typical wrestling protocol. In the end it would be Baszler who silenced her former best friend as Rousey passed out in the Kirifuda Clutch.
