With the Royal Rumble being a traditional 30-person match, there is no surprise that WWE has to dip into their NXT or NXT UK rosters. This holds especially true for the women’s main roster which is significantly less than its male counterpart.
According to research done by Fightful Select, NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray was one that was planned for 2020’s Royal Rumble match. She never ended up getting utilized.
Fightful states that Ray was brought to the venue and was involved in the rehearsal but she was never given a number to be in the match. In addition, the NXT roster itself had no idea if they would actually be used in the match until the night before the rehearsals.
There were 11-women who were part of the match from NXT and that included: Bianca Belair, Xia Li, Mercedes Martinez, Candice LeRae, Mia Yim, Dakota Kai, Chelsea Green, Toni Storm (part of NXT UK at the time), Shotzi Blackheart, Tegan Nox, and Shayna Baszler.
There are further rumors floating around that NXT will not be part of the Royal Rumble this year. They were kept out of Survivor Series and the reason why was rumored to be for safety concerns due to the pandemic. Although this concern is valid, it is hard to conclude how 30-women will be in the Rumble match when there aren’t 30 active women on the main roster.
