Lucha Underground 07/11/18: On the way up

Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, Believers. We’re treated for the second consecutive week in a row with women’s action as Ivelisse makes her presence felt against Joey Ryan.

This match carries a special stipulation, whoever wins will gain an Aztec Medallion and with it a chance to compete for the Gift of the Gods title.

The match starts off with Joey’s sleazy antics. But it’s not long before Ivelisse takes control with fast paced offense. The match unfolds like a typical Joey Ryan match, it’s fast and hard hitting, with Joey slowing the match down with his juvenile antics.

After several attempts at putting the other away, Ivelisse emerges victorious with a sunset flip power bomb. She’ll now advance with the Aztec medallion and the chance to hold the Gift of the Gods title for the first time.

Later on in the night Mil Muertes defeats Cage for an Aztec Medallion after some interference by Pentagon Dark. Catrina is by Mil’s side but she refuses to seal Cage’s fate with her signature Lick of Death.

Thoughts: I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what to make of this match announcement since it seemed random, especially since Ivelisse just ended her program with Jeremiah Crane, it seems. But thankfully LU had them fight for a reason, the Aztec Medallion. I should know better by now that usually there’s a purpose behind everything the show does.

I’m glad Joey Ryan was Ivelisse’s first opponent after her time back in the new Temple. During the previous seasons as she gained momentum, she’d somehow end up injured. Joey is one of the safest intergender wrestlers in the business.

This match served as a new launching pad for Ivelisse and I’m so glad she’s back in top form. Commentary began comparing her to another strong woman who’s willing to fight and stand up for other women everywhere. This is what LU has to do to build it’s next top tier babyface for the women and Ivelisse is in the perfect position to serve that role. She’s had so many setbacks and I’m sure if it wasn’t for them, she would have held the LU Championship. I’m hoping this begins her journey toward that goal. A fighting female champion is something I think LU would jump in to. It’s a risk that’s not really a risk, especially since the show handles it’s women with such care.

The only complaint I have in regards to LU’s small women’s roster is that there definitely isn’t enough Mariposa, yet. Sometimes you forget she’s there. I’m hoping this season is a breakout for her.

Onto Catrina, I’m liking where this is going. She just came back to life and now her MO is different? What does it all mean? She holds so much power, will she wield it for good now that she knows what it’s like to really be in a dark place? I’m curious to know more and hopefully next week we’ll get even more women’s action!

What did you think of last night’s episode? What’s next for Ivelisse? What’s up with Catrina? Sound off in the comments below.
