At the beginning of the week, everyone was a buzz about Mickie James and her match against Asuka for the RAW Women’s Title. The chase for her seventh title reign in the company did not go unnoticed and was heavily pushed on social media and by fans. But what happened at the end of that match?
The winner of the match ended up being Asuka as she retained her RAW Women’s Title. James spoke on WWE’s The Bump where she was the guest along with Trish Stratus. Her time on that program did not explain much as to what happened with the result other than she was just unhappy about it.
The referee in that match called for the bell as James was in the Asuka Lock. He determined that she could no longer continue. What made many people confused about the ending is we didn’t know why James could “not continue.” Was she injured? Did she tap out? Asuka’s shoulders were even on the mat for what may have been a three-count. So what was it?
Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT spoke with James herself and asked that all important question. What happened?
James confirmed that the decision was made to end the match based off the official thinking she was hurt. She says that he was concerned that she was injured and may have possibly had a concussion, which as we know is a serious situation. Furthermore, James feels that it wasn’t just the officials call and that someone else was telling him to call the match as well thinking that something was wrong.
“Concussions are a real thing..what we do is a sport, yes it is very dangerous what we do out there. So, if someone gets a concussion, not only can they not wrestle the rest of that match but they could possibly never wrestle again…it’s the same with football and is the same with any sport…so obviously we have to be very careful with that, and I get it.”
What made the situation more confusing was Zelina Vega’s appearance after the match as she cut a promo on Asuka to be her next challenger. This leads many to believe that James wasn’t going to win the title as it was, but that doesn’t take away from wanting a better finish. All in all, it is good to hear that the reason was as a precaution and that Mickie is in fact okay.
Also during the interview, James praised Bayley, Sasha Banks, and Naomi. She says she would love to get in the ring with Charlotte Flair and is interested to see what Mandy Rose could do on RAW.
