Earlier today, Ryan Satin from Pro Wrestling Sheet reported Mike and Maria Kanellis are interested in testing free agency. Sources told Satin the couple has been unhappy with their roles with the company for some time, and they finally decided to formally request their release “a few weeks” ago.
Maria was initially released from WWE on Feb. 26, 2010. Maria and Mike went on to become a popular duo on the pro-wrestling circuit, working at promotions like: ROH, Impact Wrestling, and New Japan. They signed with WWE in April of 2017 and made their debut as a couple in June, at Money in the Bank.
They worked a short program with Sami Zayn, but they eventually drifted off television. A few months later, Mike opened up about his battles with addiction, and Kanellis went on a leave of absence after she announced she was expecting the couple’s first child, in September.
The Kanellis welcomed their daughter, Freddie Moon Bennett, on Apr. 3, 2018. Seven months later, they made their debut on 205 Live. Mike is sober and back in great shape, but they’re still not on WWE television much. Just yesterday, Maria went to Twitter to question this.
After the ups and downs they experienced in 2017, and the hard work they put in to return, it’s not hard to understand why they might be unhappy.
The indie wrestling scene is arguably hotter than it’s ever been. More and more, wrestlers are finding success outside of WWE. With AEW presenting a new alternative, fans and insider expect to see high profile exits from big promotions, as they saw during the Monday Night Wars. Wrestling fans wait to see what move the duo will make, next.
Diva Dirt has reached out to Maria for comment. E-mails have not been returned, at this time.
