Layla, Noooooooooooo!

26

I don’t know what has left me more aghast, the shocking end of this week’s Doctor Who or the Layla news I’ve just read. The latest rumour making rounds is that Layla was moved to Raw in anticipation of her posing for Playboy next year. *Dramatic pause*

Allow me to be the first to scream “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo” in an overdramatic fashion. It’s no secret that we have championed Layla on this site from Day 1, but I cannot condone her posing for Playboy. The annual “Playboy push” is so superficial and does nothing for your career in the long run, just look at Maria. Layla has proven that she is a Diva with substance, look how far she’s come in the past two years – she is above Playboy and the pathetic “push” that comes with it. Layla has the makings of a true Diva success story; a girl that came into the company with no experience and went onto learn the ropes and become a great wrestler and future Women’s Champion. She has so much more going for her and does not need Playboy to add meaning to her career. Please Layla, if you just so happen to read this, DON’T DO IT!

We must stop the Playboy curse from taking Layla as another victim, who’s with me?

SmackDown Redux – June 27, 2008

This week on SmackDown: A blockbuster six Diva tag team match saw Cherry, Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool face off against Maryse, Natalya and Victoria.

Thoughts & Reactions
This week’s Friday Night SmackDown left me in no doubt that the blue brand is slowly edging in on Raw to co-hold the title as WWE’s top show. And SmackDown’s women’s division possibly had it’s best outing yet last night, in what I think was the single most polished match that the growing division has showcased since it’s inception. I thoroughly enjoyed this match and the work was simply superb, all these Divas worked so cohesively and all the Divas got time to shine. What a fitting match for a night that marked a new era for SmackDown; WWE really went all out during this year’s Draft to establish SmackDown as a top brand to co-headline with Raw. Finally, they have realised that they can’t afford to hold SmackDown down in favour of Raw, finally they realise that both shows need to make bank in order to succeed. Last night, I thought the six Diva tag match was a seminal match for the show and division going forward.

I really don’t have anything bad to say about this match, there wasn’t any obvious botching, all the Divas worked hard and made this a fun, competetive match. On Raw, we’re so used to seeing one Diva be dominant in the ring during tag matches but in this match, all the Divas got ring-time and it really put over all the Divas and that’s a great thing. Natalya and Michelle really went at it and just whet my appetite even more for a singles match, Natalya is so impressive in the ring and I loved her submission hold on Michelle. WWE has really held out on this singles match, I hope they deliver big time when it finally goes down – either have it as a main event of SmackDown or on pay per view.

The other Divas were great too, major props to Kelly Kelly, I was really impressed with her on SmackDown. She showed such confidence in the ring, more than she has ever shown before and really pulled out of the bag, some great moves. In her previous matches with Victoria, the Vicious Vixen had pretty much carried her through the match; however their portion in this match, Kelly was doing a lot more of the work. She really has come a long way! “Cherry Cherry” (haha) and Maryse were fine too, though they didn’t wrestle as much as the others. Victoria, as always, was a consummate professional.

Since JR was drafted to SmackDown, I have been looking forward all week to hearing he and Mick Foley call a Divas match for SmackDown and they didn’t disappoint. I cannot wait for JR to call the eventual moment when the first ever Divas Champion is crowned. That will really make history.

All in all, this was one of the best matches SmackDown has put on in recent months and that’s a bold statement because they really have been on fine form. How will Maria factor into the division when she makes her debut (I’m assuming) next week? It’ll be interesting to see how she fits in, I would love to see a feud with her and Victoria to start out with.

Diva Search Roucka Headed For Raw?

12

It seems that the stars are aligning for the WWE women’s division, as two of their brightest developmental talents are joining the main roster. Earlier this month, Victoria Crawford debuted as Alicia Fox on SmackDown and now it seems that former Diva Search contestant, Milena Roucka could be headed to Raw… all thanks to Santino Marella. You see, Santino in a recent interview revealed that he should be getting a new on-screen girlfriend very soon:

“I think I may have a new on-screen girlfriend coming up. I’m not sure exactly when or how. But the person they chose is in developmental, and she’s very sexy, you’ll want to hate her. She’d be a really good match. I’m just happy I get to kiss her once in a while,” he laughed.

Pressed for more details, Carelli elaborated a bit further.

“Just in case, she’s not the right person, I don’t want to tell you her name,” he explained. “She’s actually Canadian. I’ll leave it at that.”

What’s this got to do with Milena? Well I harken back to this post that I wrote when Alicia made her SmackDown debut, I wrote: “In the space of two weeks, ECW and SmackDown! have both gained new Divas. What about RAW? I have my eye on one Milena Roucka, a former contestant in the 2006 Diva Search which was won by Layla. She too, has gone onto become an experienced wrestler and a former OVW Women’s Champion.” Reader Walt left the following comment:

I might have some insight into the Roucka situation. Purely speculation of course.
I was at the FCW show in Florida this past Tuesday. The Divas had a talent contest. Rouckas talent was to recite a love poem which she wrote to none other than Santino Morella. She was expressing her love and respect for him. She never finished the poem as a diva brawl broke out. I fully expected to see Morella come out for an appearance. He of course did not. This might be a precursor to Roucka going up to Raw and starting a program with Santino. Who knows!!

A little glance at Roucka’s Wikipedia page confirms she is Canadian, so what do you say folks. Can we put two and two together and close this case?

Melina’s Real Injury Sidelined for Vince’s Fake Injury

14

According to reports, the reason why WWE.com hasn’t kept us updated on the status of Melina‘s very real injury thus far, is because they don’t want to detract from Vince McMahon’s very fake injury. Hmm, I would like to say I’m shocked but I’m really, really not. This is exactly the tasteless tack I expect from WWE.

Don’t worry Melina, we shall drop everything to report on you =)

WWE: No Changes Necessary for Divas

5

It has emerged today, that WWE Creative hadn’t originally planned to move any Divas during the Draft. According to reports, they felt that there wasn’t anyone that absolutely had to move. Obviously, they changed their minds with Layla and Maria being drafted yesterday.

No one that absolutely had to move?! I would say Maria’s move to SmackDown was much needed and I’m glad WWE came through in the end. Again, I can’t help but feel bad for Kelly Kelly because she has simply outgrown her role on ECW and really does deserve to move to SmackDown full time.

The Living Definition of “Eh..”

12

Wonders will never cease! Lena Yada is almost nonexistant on TV, yet she continually gets new photoshoots on WWE.com. Let’s face it – she’s the new Maryse! This photoshoot is inexplicably titled “Playful”. I’m not getting a playful vibe from this one – maybe from a Mickie shoot, but not from Lena. Isn’t it appropriate, though, that her attire almost completely matches the background? It’s almost like she’s blending into the wallpaper – that’s a literal metaphor if I’ve ever seen one. As always, I’m neither loving or hating this shoot – it’s just blah. This is becoming a big trend with Lena, and I’m curious if she’ll ever leave some sort of impression on me. Make me love or hate you, Lena! I’m getting frustrated with this glaring lack of clarity in my life.

Maria Not Happy With SmackDown Move

31

After four years on Raw, Maria was moved to SmackDown earlier today in the Supplemental Draft but girlfriend is not happy. Unlike the live Draft on Monday, the Superstars involved in today’s Draft were notified of the move beforehand. Rumour has it that Maria did not take the news well and considered it a demotion.

I hate to repeat the positives of Maria’s drafting, so I am just going to direct you to our total analysis.

Live Blog Success

So I take it from your near 100 comments, that the Supplemental Draft live blog was a success? What do you think, should we do it all over again this Sunday night for Night of Champions? Vote below:

And She’s Buying a Stairway to Heaven…

6

Michelle McCool‘s well known for her spiritual outlook – hence the “Stairway to Heaven” photoshoot title/play on words. But does she look heavenly as they say? It’s kind of a unique look, what with the bright, cobalt blue pants and vest combo. I’m digging it, though. The blue of the stairwell compliments the pants, and the fact that everything else is black keeps the look from going overboard. Overall, Michelle looks great – she’s got everything working well as far as I’m concerned. But, to reference Led Zeppelin for a moment, what with the Supplemental draft starting in a few moments as of this writing, does she have “all the glitters” (as in gold) in her future? Is RAW her destination, or is she destined to be SmackDown’s Diva Champion? Maybe none of the above? I know thoughts on her are mixed around here, but personally, I feel she has nowhere to go but up. Okay, enough with the stair metaphors..

YouTube Classics: Jazz vs. Miss Congeniality

0

Welcome to the YouTube Classics! This week, with the news of Jazz‘s first pregnancy, our theme is “Jazz Appreciation”, matches featuring the original ECW alumni and former WWE Women’s Champion. Today, we have Jazz vs. Miss Congeniality from the olden days of ECW. For those unaware, Miss Congeniality was Lita before there was a Lita. It’s amazing how different she looked – I’m not seeing Lita in there at all. It’s a wonder what difference a few years makes!

The Latest on Melina

10

Diva Dirt can confirm that Melina suffered a fractured heel on Monday night, when she was tossed over the top rope in the Raw vs SmackDown tag team match. Unfortunately, the injury seems to be worse than it first appeared and there isn’t a time frame at the moment, for Melina’s return.

Again, we’d like to send a big get well soon to Melina!

Major TNA Spoiler

WWE isn’t the only company with huge news this week, TNA also has some huge, huge news! For the non-spoiler crowd, you can find out on the July 3rd edition of Impact but for those interested please follow the cut:

SmackDown Spoilers: June 27, 2008

The new era of Friday Night SmackDown begins this week (kinda), check out what Vickie has in store for the Divas below. Unfortunately, no freakin’ mention of the Divas Championship, I’m beginning to lose hope…

Maryse, Victoria & Natalya defeated Cherry, Michelle McCool & Kelly Kelly when Maryse pinned Cherry.

There Is Hope Yet!

Many are pissed that no Divas were drafted last night on Raw, but there is still hope! WWE have announced that they will be holding a supplemental draft tomorrow! You can keep up to date with the draftings in a live blog at WWE Fan Nation from 11:45am EDT by clicking here. Our very own Erin will be posting a live blog of her very own here on Diva Dirt, should any Divas get drafted so make sure you’re locked in for the latest!

Raw Redux – June 23, 2008

7

This week on Raw: It was time for the annual WWE Draft, Raw’s Mickie James and Melina competed in a match with SmackDown’s Natalya and Victoria. Melina suffered an injury and Kelly Kelly danced like a little ho.

Thoughts & Reactions
Has anyone else noticed that the Divas seem to get even less time during the big three-hour shows than they usually do? It seemed last night’s Divas match was the shortest segment of the night – though it’s implications, one could argue, are the most shocking. These four Divas will forever be known as the girls who made JR move to SmackDown! Honestly, when they announced this was an “announcers only match” I was thinking, “Great WWE, tell us what you really think of the Divas”, I thought it’d probably end up being freakin’ Todd Grisham moving to SmackDown instead we were served with one of the biggest drafts in WWE history which we are all feeling the effects of today.

This was for me, a dream match, I love the prospect of Melina/Mickie vs Natalya/Victoria but obviously, this match was cut short with Melina’s injury and the whole segment didn’t last too long. Maybe, just maybe, we will get to see this match further down the line – it could be huge! The big story of course, is Melina’s injury and actually I’ve flip-flopped on this. At first, while watching it live, I thought it was legit but then when the referee announced the double count-out it all made sense – of course they need to move two announcers. And as I found out this morning, it was in fact legit. Looking back, I do think there was meant to be some controversial finish resulting in the double count-out leading to JR and Cole moving, but this wasn’t it. I guess WWE lucked out with a realistic finish to the match allowing that to happen, but at the expense of Melina. Hopefully she’ll be back in action soon, Raw will definitely be different without her.

I wonder if the original finish they had planned involved Beth Phoenix coming out and beating up Melina and then Mickie, Natalya and Victoria just for good measure? Probably just pure speculation on my part, but I’m trying to think what controversial finish WWE originally had planned and that could work as it would advance the Beth-Melina feud. Beth has been noticeably absent from Raw for two whole weeks, what gives?

All in all, there wasn’t too much to write home about except Melina’s injury, though I’m not really all that bitter to be honest. There were bigger stories to be told last night on Raw than the women’s division. They did plug Natalya contending for the Divas Championship and Mickie vs Katie at Night of Champions, so I guess they did what they could given the time they were given.

Melina: Because I’m Worth It

7

No this isn’t a shampoo ad, but doesn’t her hair look lovely? While it looks like Melina may be out of action for a while (or not, who knows?), WWE.com has decided to keep Melina in the cyber-forefront with a spectacular new photoshoot entitled “Morning Light”. This is actually the first Melina ‘shoot in some time that I’ve liked – first off, she’s not piling on the makeup, and nor is she dressed ridiculously or standing in front of a lame backdrop! It’s like a Christmas miracle! All the checks are in the right column for me. She has a much more natural look going on, which, when paired with sunlight seeping through the window makes for a gorgeous photoshoot that I was beginning to forget that the WWE was capable of. And it’s not just the model – the lighting and scenery add as much to it as she does. It almost looks like a legitimate magazine photoshoot. Keep this going, WWE – less drag queen makeup and cotton candy props and more natural beauty.

Mickie Keeps it On the Sunny Side

4

Mickie James keeps up her peppy and happy persona with her new photoshoot, Sunny. Since she’s indoors, in front of a black backdrop nonetheless, I assume “sunny” is referring to her constantly happy persona. I admit that it gets old quick, what with the manic smiling and all, but I don’t mind it that much. I mean, at least she’s not making duck faces. As for the outfit, I think it’s clear that’s I’ve never been a big fan of Mickie’s style. She seems to always pile too much on – there’s always way too much going on in her look. If she just got rid of a few items, this look would be 100% better. Underneath all of that jewelry and unflattering clothing, Mickie looks naturally beautiful – she should let it out once in a while!

Melina & Mickie James: Friends?!

3

Now, the storied history (both on and off screen) between Melina and Mickie James is stuff of legend across the Internet. However, last night on Raw wasn’t it ever so sweet when Mickie came to Melina’s aid after she injured her ankle? I was certainly “awwing” at the screen as Mickie seemed genuinely worried and protective for Melina. Standing by her side as the parademics helped her to the back and in this WWE.com exclusive video, Mickie can be seen right by Melina’s side as she has her ankle checked out. Check out the nasty swollen bump, ouch!

A Moment For Melina

11

Unfortunately, it turns out that Melina really did suffer an ankle injury at last night’s Raw. In a tag team match, Melina and Mickie James teamed up against SmackDown’s Natalya and Victoria. Melina suffered a hurting to her ankle when she was tossed over the top rope by Victoria.

No details on how long Melina will be out, if at all. Get well soon, Melina!

Raw Live Blog: Tag Team Action

19

This is a random post by Melanie at 3am, so it may not be too coherent. I am watching the WWE Draft and a few Diva related notes below:

– The Divas match of the night (hopefully not the only one) was enough to make any true Diva fan squeal like a little girl! I know I did! In a dream tag team match, it was Raw’s Melina and Mickie James taking on SmackDown’s Natalya and Victoria for a draft pick. This match was announcers only, meaning only announcers/interviewers could be drafted as a result.

– There was a spot where it seemed Melina was injured, for a minute I thought it was a real injury however the outcome made me think otherwise. Melina’s “injury” led to a brawl, leading to a double count-out allowing Raw and SmackDown a draft pick. If we think about it, it makes sense as they can’t just move one announcer to another brand.

– No Divas have been drafted as of yet.

– How much is Melanie looking forward to JR and Mick Foley calling the SmackDown Diva matches? A lot!

Draft Rewind: Torrie Wilson Drafted to SmackDown

1

Last year, Torrie Wilson was the only Diva to move show during the live WWE Draft on Monday Night Raw. As with previous years, in 2007 things were done differently with representatives from each brand competing in matches to determine which brand gets a draft pick. Last year, SmackDown’s MVP defeated Raw’s Santino Marella to enable SmackDown a draft pick. The computer then generated a random pick… Torrie Wilson. Unlike previous years, the 2007 Draft saw much discreetness and secrecy, meaning the Superstars found out live as we did. Torrie was visibly upset in a WWE.com interview with Todd Grisham. Unfortunately, Torrie has since retired from WWE after a brief successful stint as a wrestler on SmackDown. Watch below:

Welcome to the YouTube Classics! This week, with the news of Jazz‘s first pregnancy, our theme is “Jazz Appreciation”, matches featuring the original ECW alumni and former WWE Women’s Champion. Today, we have Jazz vs. Mickie James from the WWE vs. ECW event in June 2006. This was the only televised match during Jazz’s short-lived return to the WWE:

Draft Rewind: Nidia Drafted to Raw in 2004

1

In 2004, Tough Enough Champion, Nidia got the biggest break of her career – moving to Raw. In 2004, WWE reintroduced the WWE Draft following their milestone pay per view, WrestleMania 20. The idea was to “shake things up.” Nidia was the only Diva to make the move during the 2004 Draft, though Miss Jackie (Jackie Gayda) was moved during the post-Draft trade. This year, GMs Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman selected their Draft picks in a lottery format. Nidia became the second Superstar to be drafted during the show. Unfortunately, Nidia was released from her WWE contract in the same year. Watch below:

Draft Rewind: Lita Drafted to Raw in 2002

2

It all started in 2002, when WWE held it’s initial Draft. On this night, Raw owner, Ric Flair had 10 draft picks as did SmackDown’s Vince McMahon. Unlike the other drafts, Vince and Ric got to make their own picks rather than them being computer generated. After Vince chose Hardcore Champion, Maven as his last pick – Ric picked former Women’s Champion, Lita for Raw. Lita made history as the only Diva to be drafted during the Raw show and the first Diva ever to be drafted in WWE history. Watch below as Flair makes his shocking final selection:

Draft Day: One Year On

4

Doomsday… I mean Draft day is here!!! Which WWE Divas will be packing their bags and moving to a new home? We will find out in 12 hours, until then we want to look at the Diva draft picks from last year. Jillian, Torrie Wilson and Victoria all made the jump in ’07. Let’s see how they fared shall we?

Jillian: Last year, there was much buzz about how fans wanted Jillian to move to Raw. Though their wish was granted, not much can be boasted about Jillian’s move; in fact her shining moments were usually when she acted as Melina‘s sidekick. Poor Jillian has watched the rest of the Divas pass her by in the year she’s been on Raw, all of them have had some high profile match or another – yet Jillian continues to languish. Her only Raw highlight came when she was seen beaten up by Lita and Trish Stratus during Raw’s 15th anniversary show.
The Verdict: Fail. I’m hoping Jillian gets moved to SmackDown during this year’s Draft.

Torrie Wilson: Torrie was last year’s big Diva draft pick, as she was moved during the three-hour show. Her drafting to SmackDown is pretty infamous, as Torrie seemed visibly upset in an interview with Todd Grisham later in the night – just goes to show how tight-lipped WWE is about the Draft. Torrie didn’t find out until the announcement was made live on television! Torrie had a good two years on Raw where she improved vastly, but over the course of 2007 seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Her move to SmackDown helped her reclaim some of her former glory as a top Diva, as she took back the crown she held for so long as SmackDown’s top Diva. Torrie and Victoria helped develop the women’s division we’ve come to know over the past year and the pair delivered some great matches. However, after a run of bad luck, Torrie’s career met it’s end on the blue brand. First, she was set to be involved in a long-running feud with Krissy Vaine which never truly came to fruition as Krissy left WWE two weeks after being called up to SmackDown, leaving Torrie, once again lost in the shuffle. Next, Torrie had to take time off to heal nagging back injuries – unfortunately, for her and her fans the extent of the inuries was far worse than initially thought. Torrie retired from WWE and professional wrestling in May 2008 after her back failed to heal.
The Verdict: Bit of both. Torrie’s move to SmackDown started out strong and WWE even planted the seeds to what was supposed to be a long running storyline with Krissy Vaine. Unfortunately, bad luck struck twice and ended Torrie’s career. For this Torrie fan there are a lot of “what ifs”, what if Krissy hadn’t have left? I think this feud could have really rejuvenated SmackDown’s women’s division. It’s just bad luck…

Victoria: Many were shocked to see the Vicious Vixen drafted to SmackDown, but what a success story that has been. For the first time in years, Victoria is actually relevant to current WWE storylines and not just jobbing or getting lost in the shuffle. Victoria’s move to SmackDown once again kick-started her burgeoning career and the Diva has enjoyed much success and TV time on SmackDown and ECW. In fact, I think she’s gotten more TV time in the past year than she got in her last few years on Raw. Victoria has had feuds with the likes of Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly and has recently teamed up with Natalya. Many thought the move to SmackDown was the end of her career, but in fact it’s done wonders for her. With the launch of a new Divas Championship, Victoria is in line to make history… could she become the first Diva to hold both the Women’s and Divas Championships? The Vicious Vixen has a good couple of years in her and her future prospects on SmackDown are limitless.
The Verdict: Pass. Victoria has enjoyed more success in the past year than she had in her last few years on Raw. There’s a lot left that she can do on SmackDown too.
