Women of the Year 2013: Paige

16

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Paige

Last, but certainly not least, we have Paige. There are many wrestling prodigies in the WWE right now, but hardly any are more promising than the current NXT Women’s Champion Paige. Born in sports entertainment, wrestling is in Paige’s blood. As she followed her parents Ricky and Saraya Knight into the business, everyone knew Paige had the fundamentals to make it. She was signed by the WWE in late 2011, but this was year that Paige finally made her mark.

Paige demonstrated in NXT that she is the total package. She has Diva good looks roughed up with an undertone of ominous moodiness. She has showcased her impressive in-ring ability in a Match of the Year-nominated performance with Emma, stellar battles with arch-rival Summer Rae and main roster mainstays like Alicia Fox and Tamina Snuka. This triple threat of talent is capped off by her solid mic work, as highlighted in backstage segments with Emma and Natalya. And of course, Paige made history by becoming the first ever NXT Women’s Champion, an accolade no other can say they achieved.

Paige isn’t here to be a cover girl, she’s here to cover girls in the ring…and win. That is precisely what she’s done.

Thank you for joining us in our celebration of 2013’s Women of the Year! Have a happy new year!

Women of the Year 2013: Ayumi Kurihara

3

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Ayumi Kurihara

2013 would be the final year in the career of modern Joshi’s most celebrated stars, Ayumi Kurihara. She retired in August after an eight-year career riddled with injuries – a common enemy of those who practice the hard-hitting Japanese style of wrestling.

Things started off badly for Ayumi in 2013, as she fractured an orbital bone at an Oz Academy match in February. The following month, she announced her impending retirement, and set about saying her farewells the only way she knew how: in the middle of the ring. At SHIMMER 53 in April she faced Mercedes Martinez in a losing effort in what was to be her final match on American soil before heading back to Japan to see out her last months in wrestling, working largely at WAVE, where she faced the likes of Ayako Hamada, Kana and many more in matches that were every bit as good as the classics she’s had in the past.

Her final appearance, at a show entitled “Ayumi Kurihara: Thank You For Everything”, saw her team up with Mika Iida and AKINO to defeat Aja Kong, GAMI and Hiroyo Matsumoto, before being showered with streamers and paraded around on her colleagues’ shoulders in a warm and teary farewell. Thank you, Ayumi!

Come back at the top of the next hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2013’s “Women of the Year”.

Women of the Year 2013: Kaitlyn

14

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Kaitlyn

Kaitlyn entered 2013 as the ever-improving underdog, looking to pounce at any chance she could to take Eve Torres‘s WWE Divas Championship, and now she leaves the year behind her as a former champion herself, and as one half of perhaps the hottest, most talked about female feud we’ve seen the company execute in years. Add in getting engaged and making history by taking part in the first ever Divas Championship contract signing, and 2013 has been quite a big deal for the Texan native who just three short years ago was taking part in her first match ever on live TV.

It was back in January where Kaitlyn would defeat Eve to claim her first championship, and not only that, but in her hometown to boot. The night was certainly unforgettable to not only her, but the fans as well. Following that, she went onto a high profile feud opposite ex-BFF AJ Lee, which saw Lee use a phony secret admirer ruse to get inside Kaitlyn’s mind and take the title from her at Payback in a hotly contested match.

Though Kaitlyn was never able to reclaim the title she once held so proudly, she did partake in three of our nominated matches of the year, as well as all of the accolades mentioned above… and for that, we are thrilled to call her one of 2013’s Women of the Year.

Come back at the top of every hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2013’s “Women of the Year”.

Women of the Year 2013: Heidi Lovelace

2

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Heidi Lovelace

Heidi Lovelace has certainly had quite a stellar 2013, including breaking down many a barrier set in the world of women’s professional wrestling. While Diva Dirt readers may be a bit more familiar with her due to a much publicized OVW storyline in which she possessed romantic feelings for fellow femme fatale, Taeler Hendrix, Lovelace has accomplished quite a lot on the independent circuit as well. Including, but not limited to, appearances at SHINE (featuring a very well regarded showing against Mercedes Martinez specifically) and SHIMMER (where she graduated to the main roster following a victory over Angelus Layne on SPARKLE), Heidi has also turned heads with some critically acclaimed showings as she partook in a variety of intergender matches to boot.

Heidi Lovelace’s 2013 journey starts all the way back in January at the first ever National Pro Wrestling Day, which saw she and partner Devin Bliss team up against Tripp Cassidy and Reed Bentley. The duo didn’t emerge victorious, but Heidi earned far more than just a win that day as soon as the reviews filled with copious amounts of praise came pouring in. From there, Lovelace went on to team up with one of our Women to Watch last year, Saturyne, at CHIKARA’s Tag World Grand Prix, again facing off against male opponents in Darin Corbin and Arik Cannon. Perhaps her biggest moment thus far though, would be when she scored the upset to defeat Eddie Kingston at Wrestling is Heart’s October 19th show.

Add in a debut for AAW where she rivaled “Miss NaturalHeather Patera, a successful return to AIW with two tag team victories under her belt at Girls Night Out 8 (teaming with Nikki St. John to defeat Angel Dust and KC Warfield) and 10 (teaming with Annie Social to take down Leva Bates and Xandra Bale), and a top notch showing at IWA:Mid South just a few weeks ago where she was involved in a Five-Way match… and you’ve got one hell of a year to look back upon. 2014 looks to be no step back for Heidi either, as she’s already set to face Crazy Mary Dobson on January 4th at “Crossing State Lines” in Albion, IL as well as team up with former rival, Reed Bentley to do battle with Mary and Mad Man Pondo on January 9th for Evolution Pro Wrestling’s “Holiday Hangover”. Needless to say, Heidi Lovelace has done way more than enough to earn a spot as one of our 2013 Women of the Year. In fact, she’s probably already done enough to cement her place on the 2014 list as well.

Special thanks to Jennifer.

Come back at the top of every hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2013’s “Women of the Year”.

Women of the Year 2013: Stephanie McMahon

12

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Stephanie McMahon

Our choice for Heel of the Year just happens to be one of our fabulous Women of the Year as well. This is almost a no-brainer as Stephanie McMahon embodies everything that a strong, powerful female should be. As a wife and mother, Stephanie has a full-time job. Those things aren’t easy to do, but when you add in the fact she helps run a multibillion dollar company and maintains a steady presence on a weekly television show it seems almost impossible.

But the McMahon princess does it all and I can only assume she tackles her personal life with as much passion as she tackles what we get to see on TV. For months, Stephanie has injected much needed life into the sometimes stale WWE flagship show, Raw. She’s gone back to being that person we all love to hate, and she’s still a better heel than anyone, male or female, in that company. Her storylines haven’t exactly been perfect, but Stephanie has managed to make them into something much more than what they should be. Her talent is in her genes, but it’s her passion for what she does that shines through.

2013 will come to an end with the Authority still reeking havoc within the WWE and unless something drastic happens, 2014 will continue to be the same. In the end, we’ll all win because if this. I know that I’m personally okay with anything that keeps Stephanie McMahon on my TV screen.

Come back at the top of every hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2013’s “Women of the Year”.

Raw Redux (December 30th, 2013): Ringing in the New Year with Dancing, Tension and… Aksana?!

531

What’s up everybody? Remember when I joined you guys a few days ago to recap Tribute to the Troops and said I wasn’t sure how long it’d be before I make my redux return again? Well it turns out my hibernation dungeon has suffered immense damage at the hands of the big bad Tamina Snuka. She huffed… she puffed… and she threw vests at it until it came crashing all the way down, so I’m here with you tonight until I can find a place to stay. Oh wait, I should have probably introduced myself first because if you didn’t read the Tribute to the Troops recap you’re likely lost and confused right now. Ladies and Gentlemen, It’s me, Bobby, at your service!

Now, we’ve got a big Raw in store for you. Why you ask? Because not only did something pretty much unheard of go down in the land of the Divas division (which we’ll get to later), but because it fell on my lottery ticket filled birthday. So while I may not have gotten to watch the show live, I checked back in after it ended and celebrated the big day with both a 5 on 5 Divas tag match AND Fandango getting a title shot (which I’m also allowed to mention since a certain stunning partner accompanied him).

When it comes to the 5 on 5 match, we got to see another variation of the Total Divas against the Non-Total Divas, which I guess has become the new clarification of faces and heels. Kaitlyn still finds herself among the likes of Aksana, Alicia Fox, Summer Rae and Rosa Mendes for some reason, but we’re going to roll with it because it is a holiday after all and we should be cheery. The five of them teamed up to take on Naomi, Cameron, Eva Marie, Brie and Nikki Bella, as both Natalya and AJ Lee were off in Toronto performing at a house show. No word on what happened to JoJo or Tamina, but after the countless theories I came up with to explain situations quite similar on Tribute to the Troops involving Miss Snuka, I think we can all infer what’s going down between them. (Hint: I’m going to guess for this one, Tamina has trapped JoJo in a storage room and is forcing her to watch ASPCA “In the Arms of an Angel” commercials as punishment for that pinfall victory in the Survivor Series rematch last month that Tamina has still not forgotten about).

Now with all of that being said, we can get underway with the action!

Boooooooo. Nothing against the Bella Twins theme song, but you can’t give me two uses of worldwide hit “On Top of the World” for Team Total Divas entrances and then backtrack this late in the game…. unacceptable. Nevertheless, out walks five of our Total Divas in Brie, Nikki, Eva, Naomi and Cameron as their opponents of Rosa, Alicia, Aksana, Summer Rae and Kaitlyn stand in the ring already. A “Brie Mode” sign is shown almost instantly, but all I can ever think of when I hear that phrase is drunk Brie running across a couch and drunk Nikki taking a spinning tumble off said sofa as her drink flies around and an unaware Brie just keeps dancing to the beat of some Vegas tunes.

We begin the match with Kaitlyn and All Red Everything herself, Eva Marie (who can be seen ordering her teammates out of the ring as if to say she’s got this all on her own). The two circle around before locking up and allowing Kaitlyn to get the upper hand with a waist lock. Eva then elbows out of it and plays up to the booing crowd before turning right around into a dropkick from Kaitlyn. The former champ sends Eva slamming into the corner, following it up with a sidewalk slam for a two count. Kaitlyn proceeds to hoist Eva up and toss her into the ropes, but Eva scores with a nice kick and another slap before looking to tag out. The only problem? Like a crowd of people uncomfortably trying to avoid me as I unknowingly find myself singing along to songs from my iPod in a grocery store, they want absolutely nothing to do with her.

This sparks a feisty Eva to smack Cameron right in the face and signify a tag, but that doesn’t mean Cameron’s going to just do as she’s instructed no questions asked. The Funkadactyl proceeds to shove Eva, but doing so also provides enough distraction for Kaitlyn to get a quick roll up for a two. Alicia Fox now scores a blind tag and spanks Kaitlyn on the butt to get out, as Cameron nails a beautiful headscissors takedown which I will now refer to as “The Chingle Chingle” because it looked so nice I’d pay to see it done again. I don’t think I’m going to get my wish though, as Alicia is now in a corner trying to cower out of some forearm shots. Cameron goes flying into the opposite direction, but leaps up and looks to nail a rope assisted variation of her headscissors. Alicia has other plans though, for she drops Cameron right on her face and oh wow, that didn’t look good.

Tag in to Summer Rae, who locks in her corner foot choke before tagging out to her doppleganger, Rosa Mendes (Seriously this has to be some sort of joke they’re playing to make it hard on Michael Cole, in which case I love both of you even more). Some boots to the midsection, as Aksana now sees legal entrance into the action and drops Cameron back first on the canvas for a two. She reverts to a submission and teases the crowd a little bit, but the fans are rallying behind Cameron. Unfortunately, Cameron isn’t able to tag out just yet as her hopes go “bye bye” for now at the hands (err, kicks) of Aksana. We’re back in the submission again, only this time Cameron fights out and makes the tag to Nikki B!

Nikki charges in with a sick takedown, following it with a clothesline and a dropkick. Clothesline to the corner now, before going for the torture rack! It’s stopped though, as all the Divas now charge in because getting a multi woman match that doesn’t break out in a catfight is about as likely to happen as former WWE Diva, Rebecca DiPietro making a return and becoming Divas Champion. (And yes, I’m well aware that as I say this, by next year Rebecca will probably be putting on clinics at TNA Pay Per Views and I’ll look like a fool, so keep this redux bookmarked guys!)

Back inside the ring, Nikki Bella has Aksana down and ascends to the top rope. Unfortunately (and quite terrifyingly) she then looks over to see a blonde figure menacingly screaming as she charges towards her. Is it Summer Rae? That depends on which of these two blonde women you think is her (Seriously, you have a match involving twins and they’re easier to tell apart from behind at this rate). To me though, it appears to be a wild Rosa Mendes getting that camera time before she’s taken down by Nikki, who is then taken down by Aksana in return. Aksana is… she’s doing something… wait, what’s going on? My entire life is flashing before my eyes as I just looked up and saw Aksana… THE Aksana, drop Nikki with her new reverse eye of the hurricane elbowy move (technical terms only here, people) and cover…

You guys, she’s hooking Nikki’s legs and I don’t know how to form a sentence right now. Have I been transported to some alternate universe where this poor Lithuanian woman just trying to make a better life for herself in America is being threatened with relentless shovel beatings? Because something has clearly lit a fire under her enough to score a… victory?! This sudden sexy saxophone music hits that I don’t think I have ever heard play at the end of a match before and the five non Total Divas kind of look too shocked to even celebrate their victory. Alicia looks as if she’s seen a holy ghost flash before her and Summer seems to be confused like she thinks they lost again and have to rush to the back to let the Total Divas celebrate. No Summer, you won! Take it all in! Nobody knows what’s going on, but dammit Aksana you of all people just made my birthday Raw something I will remember and I feel like I owe you something in return. Did anyone ever tell you what a Llama was? I guess I don’t mind being the chosen one.

And now for the rest of the show, first starting off with Aksana, Alicia Fox, Kaitlyn, Eva Marie and… okay I lost count. There’s a lot of Divas here who are all probably in the match we just recapped so check them out as they celebrate New Years with Xavier Woods and co! (Note: I now see Rosa Mendes and the Bellas so I think I got everyone.)

And up next we pay a visit to Naomi and Cameron who now seem to have their own funky nameplate titantron! Small victories everyone. They’re distracting Brodus Clay in his match against R-Truth, and it proves to work because R-Truth gets the win as all three of them (plus Xavier) dance in the ring.

You can also check out Summer Rae as she manages Fandango for his Intercontinental Title match against Big E Langston. Does the glitzy pair now have a shiny new accessory to add alongside Summer’s expensive dance shoes in their luggage?

And now we come to the one and only Stephanie McMahon, who can first be seen backstage alongside husband, Triple H, as well as Brad Maddox. The power couple basically plug that they’re going to have special announcements pertaining to the Royal Rumble later on.

And speaking of major(?) announcements, here’s the final video which features Stephanie making the blockbuster announcement that Randy Orton will defend his WWE World Heavyweight Title against John Cena at the Rumble in a historic bout that will be groundbreaking in that it will be contested in a traditional showing with no stipulations or interferences! It will have one fall to a finish in which the winner can only be named by pinfall or submission! …so in other words, it will be a regular singles match that we see about five times per show. (But Stephanie really has a way with words to make it sounds monumental, so I had to echo her no matter what).

Thoughts: Where do I even begin? Alright, so when I first saw we were having a five on five Total Divas vs. Regular/Anti Total/Non Total/Whatever you want to call them Divas, I wasn’t particularly thrilled. Don’t get me wrong I was still looking forward to it because it at least would feature Divas outside the usual five or six, but I just figured it would be our usual Total Divas victory. Needless to say, I was immensely surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It felt different, and personally, WWE did a lot of things right in this match that I’d been wanting to see for a while.

First off, they let the Total Divas lose. The reason why I didn’t really care to see this match at the start was because I had seen the same showing with a different number each time and it always ended the same way. We need the sides to feel evenly split and I won’t say tonight went a long way in doing that, but it certainly went far more than it ever has before. Thumbs up!

Secondly, they allowed Aksana to get the win. I’ve said in the past that Aksana isn’t one of my favorite Divas in particular, but I can’t even hate on her for the upset. Another one of my gripes with this feud was that half the Non Total Divas team had been basically piling up losses for years that I didn’t buy them as a threat to such a high profile-esque stable. By allowing Aksana to pin Nikki tonight, it has gone to fix at least one of them by making me feel like seeing Aksana win isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility. Is it still believable? I mean, I guess anything is possible no matter how many times you lose because all it takes is three seconds to score a win, but regardless of that, I found it to be fun and unexpected. It was something I would gladly take over seeing the Total Divas plow through the competition again (and I say that as a fan of all five of them).

Thirdly, they finally gave Eva Marie the okay to portray a heel in this faction like she did through most of the actual show. Whether or not they were forced to due to the reaction she gets, I don’t know or care. It makes the team way more interesting to me when they’re not all one big happy family, and in my opinion, this was an even better showing for her than Tribute to the Troops. I know I’m going to get the whole thing of “all she did was a kick and a slap”, but she looked a lot more fluid out there than she ever has. She didn’t seem lost, and she played up to that crowd. Say what you want behind the reasoning she gets booed, but the fact of the matter is that she gets booed at all. Not many Divas (or Superstars to be honest) elicit a response due to either poor booking and/or lack of opportunities, but Eva is making it work. Personally, I want her to become primarily a manager for the time being, either for another Diva or a Superstar in need. Any unover heel on the roster could benefit from having her in their corner, and it would also give her time to train in NXT so that when she does have matches, she does even better each time she’s out there.

Fourth, they displayed actual tension amongst the Total Divas. I kind of hit on this in the paragraph above, but Total Divas works better for me when they’re split into faces and heels amongst them ala the days of Nattie and the Funkadactyls opposite Brie, Nikki and Eva. I don’t want to see them all get along with one another and basically always be in the forefront of the title picture, especially if they’re only going to fluctuate between Brie and Nattie as challengers for AJ. I have nothing against either of course, but it gets kind of stale just bouncing back and forth between them when you could be giving opportunities to Nikki or Naomi, even Cameron to be honest for something a little different. Hopefully they fully go along with Eva being heel, although it’s kind of damned it you, damned if you don’t because even if they flipped Kaitlyn and Eva in order to make the dispositions line up, it would look weird seeing Kaitlyn now teaming with the women she’s been facing for the past month. I’m honestly not sure where we can go from here, but I hope it involves something different heading into 2014. There are still a lot of kinks to work out in this division, but tonight felt like a step forward (to me at least) instead of a step back or no step at all. For an end of the year show where things of prominence don’t usually happen, I’ll take it!

Happy new year and until next time,

Bobby

Women of the Year 2013: Lei’D Tapa

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Lei’D Tapa

Destructive. Dangerous. Deadly.

That’s three words you could use to describe the monstrous Lei’D Tapa, who burst onto the scene in TNA in 2013. We first met Tapa on a national scale in February when she defeated Ivelisse in the Gut Check competition to win a TNA contract. Tapa would soon begin running through the completion in OVW, including competing in the first ever Fatal Four-Way Ladder Match for the OVW Women’s Championship, and eventually winning the title from Hannah Blossom. Tapa would made her main roster debut on October 3rd, where she quickly laid waste to Knockouts such as Brooke, Velvet Sky and ODB.

Tapa looked to be the next in line for a shot at ODB’s Knockouts Championship, so we were a little shocked when a 3-Way match was made for Bound for Glory, but soon it would all become clear. Lei’D Tapa would align herself with Gail Kim, helping her win the Knockouts Championship at Bound For Glory. The fierce duo would dominate the Knockouts Division for the rest of 2013.

While Tapa proved her dominance in 2013, the question is, Will she remain by Gail Kim’s side in 2014, or could Lei’D Tapa be looking for some singles gold of her own?

Women of the Year 2013: Rain and Valkyrie

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

Rain and Valkyrie

No stable has made as much of an impact in 2013 as Valkyrie. Consisting of leader Rain, the tag team of Allysin Kay and Taylor Made, trump card Ivelisse and manager April Hunter, the group have been on a path of utter dominance since their formation at SHINE 6 in January, and have shown few signs of stopping.

Allysin Kay and Taylor Made quickly made themselves known as SHINE’s hottest up-and-coming tag team when they first joined forces in SHINE’s early days, and by the time Valkyrie were formed they were already an established force. Since then, despite some setbacks, Made in Sin have continued to pose a serious threat – both in singles and tag competition – to anyone who stands in their way.

Rain is currently SHINE Champion, a title everyone was expecting her to either lose or relinquish earlier this month at SHINE 15. However, in a shocking twist she announced that her planned retirement was officially cancelled, and that she was here to stay.

Her next opponent, however, will be Valkyrie’s breakout star Ivelisse – arguably the most independent member of the group. 2013 has been a year of incredible match after incredible match for the Huntress, from her standout contest against LuFisto at SHINE 7 to her magnificent matches against Mia Yim throughout the year. With her and Rain set for a collision course in January, will Valkyrie be able to hold together? Given the year they’ve had, it’d be a shame for them not to.

Women of the Year 2013: Nikki Storm

Nikki Storm

Nikki Storm is quite simply one of the most natural all-round performers in professional wrestling today, with a presence – both verbally and physically – that forces you to hang on to every single word and motion that she produces. 2013 was the year when the parts of the world that aren’t Britain got to see what this phenomenal Glaswegian lass is truly capable of.

Things began positively, with Nikki winning the Pro Wrestling: EVE Championship from Emi Sakura in February in a wrestling clinic, then taking it with her to Japan and defending it in JWP against Hanako Nakamori. Back in Britain, she began to notch up some serious scalps, facing Mickie James in a losing effort in July then defeating Portia Perez in a brilliant contest at ICW: Fierce Females in September.

Shortly afterwards she made the trip across the Atlantic, spending a month on the American circuit and picking up big wins against Mia Yim in AIW and Su Yung and Veda Scott in SHIMMER, before getting a massive rub in defeating the veteran Nikki Roxx in her final SHINE match before her retirement. While in the States, Storm cemented herself as one of the most entertaining and watchable heels on the women’s scene for some time, and while we in Blighty are certainly glad to see her back on our shores for now, it may be only a matter of time before Nikki Storm becomes a real global sensation.

Women of the Year 2013: The Cast of ‘Total Divas’

0

Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.

The cast of Total Divas

Brie and Nikki Bella, Natalya, Naomi, Cameron, Eva Marie and JoJo cemented their status on this list the minute Total Divas debuted on E! The ground-breaking reality show that focused on the personal trials and tribulations of each of these women gave fans and non-wrestling fans a look behind the curtains of World Wrestling Entertainment. Nothing like this had ever taken place in wrestling before thanks to business wanting to keep the lines between what’s real and what’s fake a mystery. So when these seven women, along with their boyfriends and families, agreed to take part in something so personal, you just kind of knew something special was about to happen.

As the youngest member of the cast, JoJo got off to a rocky start and was rarely seen in the second-half of the season. Perhaps she found out the hard way that reality television just wasn’t for her, but that didn’t stop her for appearing at NXT this past year and on Monday Night Raw. Some of her highlights include singing the National Anthem at SummerSlam and eliminating Tamina Snuka in an Elimination Tag Team match. We can’t really be sure what the future holds for JoJo, but we can thank her for the memories she provided us with during the first half of the show. Who will ever forget that break-up with Sebastien?!

Eva Marie came into our lives with one thing on her mind; be the Diva that everyone ends up talking about. And you know what? Mission accomplished. Love her, or hate her, Miss All Red Everything is a force of nature to be reckoned with. Her antics and personality, coupled with her desire to be in the spotlight as much as possible have certainly rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and gotten her in a lot of trouble. But through all that negativity and all the hate that gets thrown at her, Eva Marie has risen up and kept her head held high, doing her thing and working to get better. 2014 could end up being a huge year for Eva Marie, and on a personal note, I’m curious to see if her family ever warms up to Johnathan!

Total Divas also launched Cameron into the spotlight and a shined a positive light on her and the progression she has made a performer and a person. As the first person cut from Tough Enough, Cameron wasn’t really given much a shot to last in wrestling, but here she is as the last person from that show standing. Not only did Total Divas give us a chance to see her personality, but it gave her a platform to launch several catchphrases (“girl, bye”, “chingle, chingle”, ect.) and meet her better half, Vinnie. The show also gave us a chance to see just how close she is to her Funkadactyl teammate, Naomi.

All of us have had such high hopes for Naomi since NXT, and when she failed to win the show, her fans raged. Stuck down in FCW/NXT for the longest time, people started to wonder if she would ever get the call-up. Eventually, she did, but not in a role that people enjoyed. But regardless of that, Naomi was on television and the best for her is still to come. At times her matches can be sloppy, but this year Naomi proved that she is dynamic inside the ring. Every match she participated in gave her some type of moment that seemed special. On Total Divas, her relationship with Jimmy Uso was often the focus and their playfulness and pet names for each other won them a lot of fans. Also, we discovered that when it comes to rocking a maxi dress, Naomi has almost no competition.

The only person who can hold a candle to Naomi in the maxi dress department is Nikki Bella, who showed us all the layers of her personality this year. Her up-and-down relationship with John Cena made us laugh and cry, delighted us and angered us. Backstage, Nikki had to watch her sister Brie get the push of a lifetime, with title shot after title while she herself sat out with an injury. We watched her mature during the show and make a triumphant return to the ring with a more explosive personality that further set her apart from Brie, and it was an amazing thing to see.

Speaking of Brie, it was a banner year for her. Very rarely does personal and professional success come together as one, but in 2013 it definitely did for Brie. We got to watch her love with Daniel Bryan play out on Total Divas and we got to see her improve each and every week inside the ring. Brie showed a side of herself that none of us thought she was capable, cementing the fact that time off sometimes does a person a favor. Brie came back stronger, determined, and better and had an incredible match with Natalya back at SummerSlam that showcased just how far she has come.

Natalya. Often overlooked, pushed to the side, and a mere afterthought in the hearts and minds of fans and her peers, but thanks to Total Divas, she’s no longer an afterthought. Natalya is a woman that a lot of people can relate too, and someone who has a wardrobe that every girl has got to envy. This year we got to share her joy when she finally walked down the aisle with the love of her life Tyson Kidd, and her undeniable grief when Gismo got sick. I think out of all the girls on the show, Total Divas benefited Nattie the most. We were reminded at just how good she is and what her legacy could be. Her book is still be written as we speak and I think I speak for all of us when I say that there better be plenty of chapters left.
