Diva B-Sides Double Dip: The Bellas and Katie Lea

14

divabsides

We can all agree that, with a few exceptions, Divas get the short end of the stick when comes to entrance themes. While the male superstars get music from actual bands and artists or custom made songs with lyrics, Divas get stuck with crappy production music. If I had the chance I would change all the Divas music to something a little… well, better. Hence, Diva B-Sides was born; a Diva Dirt exclusive where we match WWE Divas and TNA Knockouts with new entrance themes. This week I’m covering ECW Divas Katie Lea and The Bella Twins.

THE BELLAS TWINS – “PATRON TEQUILA” BY PARADISO GIRLS

ECW’s resident dynamic duo debuted a new theme this Thursday on WWE Superstars, and boy was it awful. Not as bad Jenna’s music, but still cringe-worthy nonetheless. Sounds like these girls are in need of a emergency B-Side.

As Melanie pointed out on the Diva Dirt Twitter, their new theme sounds like cheap Pussycat Dolls rip-off. That said, what better than an imitation PCD to sing their B-Side?

Honestly speaking, I should be ashamed that I know (or like) this song, but I really think it’s energy and danceable beat suits the Bellas quite nicely. The subject matter may be a bit questionable, but who’s really paying that much attention to The Bellas. Really…        [audio:The Bellas-Paradiso Girls – Patron Tequila.mp3]

The Tiffany Guide to Impact: More Backwards Booking

19

tnaimpact091109

This week on Impact treats us to even more tag team competition and something a little extra.  First in Knockout action is match numero tres of the 1st round: Taylor Wilde and Sarita vs. Alissa Flash and Daffney.  Have I mentioned just how much I loathe Taylor and Sarita’s ring entrance?

Taylor Wilde & Alissa Flash begin the match with a test of strength.  Taylor manages to outwrestle Alissa into an armbar, but Alissa slams her down.  With a kip up, Taylor laces fingers with Alissa and tags out to Sarita.  Taylor nails an arm drag with an assistance of the turnbuckles, and Sarita follow up with a flying arm drag.  Those two invent and impose multiple inventive tandem offense that I won’t even attempt to call.  A series of arial manuevers and arm drags later, Sarita attemps a dropkick, but Alissa braces herself against the ropes and charges back with a clothesline.

Daffney gets her chance to in on the action with a big uppercut to Sarita.  However, Sarita counters that with yet another arm drag and a flip over.  What is that, arm drag #304?  Daffney kicks out at two, and Taylor Wilde gets tagged in.  She attempts a sunset flip from the second rope, but Daffney rolls out before a count can be made.  Sarita channels some poetry in motion.  However, her not being the legal woman all encourages Slick Johnson to shoo her ass right out of the ring.  Meanwhile, Daffney whips Sarita into the opposing corner where she suffers a cheap shot courtesy of Alissa.  Alissa gets tagged in and goes back on the offense with a powerful scoop slam and a stomp to the face.

The “Lovely and Very Pasty” Daffney gets tag in again.  This time, she takes Taylor down with a Shining Wizard now aptly referred to as “Daff-Knees” and then follows up with an abdominal stretch.  Taylor wastes no time maneuvering out of the move with a knee to Daffney’s face.  Both women make the hot tag to their respective partners.  Sarita goes for a crossbody on both Alissa and Daffney, is abruptly stopped, but overcomes with a tornado DDT to Daffney.  With an assist from Sarita, Taylor delivers some more impressive offense to the Future Legend.  Sarita capitalizes with a splash, but Alissa gets the shoulder up 2 while Taylor and Daffney take the fight to the outside.  Sarita drops Alissa with a belly-to-belly suplex for the win?  WHAT?  All of that aerial work and only a standard finish to show for it?  Oh well.  Taylor Wilde and Sarita advance.

Sarita and Taylor Wilde seemingly do everything that they can to reiterate the “tag team aspect” in this tournament.  An overall good match, I find the constant aerial offense a bit gratuitous.  While awesome, it does little to add to the storytelling element.  Otherwise, “Taylor/Sarita” is the most believable team next to the Beautiful People.

SmackDown Redux (September 11th, 2009) – A Picture’s Worth 1,000 Words

20

Last time on SmackDown: Michelle confronts Maria backstage, again warning her against Dolph. Later, Maria & Eve took on Natalya & Layla, with Eve getting the pin on Layla.

This week: Is the Dolph saga heading for a plot twist? How about the Melina/Michelle feud–is it going to reclaim the spotlight after being relatively nonexistent last week?

This is getting to be a set-in pattern, as we once again start the show with a backstage segment. We see the lovely and talented Dolph Ziggler walking up to the Divas locker room door. Michelle approaches him and turns on the charm. He says he’s looking for Maria, and she offers to help, knocking on the door. Oh.. This might get good:

Layla answers the knock, opening the door. Signs of a coordinated attack begin to surface as Michelle asks Layla if Maria’s in the room. She says no, and looks to leave the scene. Michelle, trying to look as enticing as is possible while one is hobbling on a crutch, asks him what he sees in Maria, wondering why he could be with a “ditzy little girl” like her when he could be with a “sexy woman” like herself. She veers off her crutch and Dolph catches her, allowing Michelle to get a handful or 5 of his ass. In the distance, we can see Layla taping the whole thing on her cellphone. He pushes Michelle against the door, rejecting the advance and repeating “No. No No.”. He leaves, and Layla shows Michelle what she got on her phone. Michelle deems it “perfect”. Uh oh.. Does GTV have a modern counterpart?

On the wrestling side of things, Melina makes her way to the ring, seemingly oblivious to what has recently gone on. One has to wonder how Maria will react to that footage, and what that means for her friendship with Melina. Something tells me shouting “I told ya so!!!” isn’t Melina’s style. Layla, accompanied by Michelle, makes her entrance, and we’ve got a match:

Layla gets to an aggressive start, kneeing Melina and latching her into a headlock. Melina shoves her into the ropes, and on the return Layla shoulder-strikes her onto the mat. Layla bounces off the ropes, leaps over Melina’s prone body, and bounces off the other side of the ring. Melina makes her own leap, getting some air as she launches over Layla, who reaches the ropes for a 3rd time and gets hit with a flapjack delivered by Melina. Dizzy yet?

Mickie James Injured with Ruptured Breast Implant

22

mickie5

Add Divas Champion, Mickie James to the injured list along with Kelly Kelly.

Rumours had been circulating that Mickie had ruptured one of her implants last weekend, this has now been confirmed by PWInsider. They report she is due to have them fixed soon.

Though not a serious ‘injury’ per se, both the Divas and Women’s Champions are sidelined. That’s not a good look.

Kelly Kelly Injured & Update on Michelle McCool

4

kellymichelleinjured

Rumours of Raw Diva, Kelly Kelly being injured are true. The young Diva has been working on a bad right knee, reports PWInsider.

Yesterday on her Twitter, Kelly noted she had just had an MRI exam.

In more knee injury news, Michelle McCool has confirmed her injured knee in a new blog post:

I actually tore the corner of my PCL and the band that runs across my meniscus that holds the knee capsule together and bruised the bone pretty badly (which hurts way worse than it sounds)….good times!:) Just joking…not good times – at all! In fact, it down right stinks! It’s still pretty sore, but I have been able to test it back out in the ring as of late!

The Women’s Champion returned to the ring last week on a tour of Puerto Rico, when she defeated Melina in a singles match. Despite the in-ring return, it looks as though McCool is still in pain.

Elsewhere in the blog, she notes she’d like to face Melina in a cage match at the ‘Hell in a Cell’ pay per view on October 4th. Whether that’s an indication of when she expects to be back wrestling on TV, is up for speculation.

Our best wishes go out to both Kelly and Michelle on a speedy recovery.

ECW Does WWE Superstars (September 10th, 2009)

21

superstars10sept09

The ECW Divas got a rare opportunity to wrestle last night on WWE Superstars, as Nikki Bella of the Bella Twins [in case you didn’t know] took on Katie Lea of the Burchill siblings, in a rehash of the extremely one-sided feud from this past summer. You can’t really even call it a feud because if it were, Katie would at least get the upperhand once — hence the ‘one-sided’ feud. The Bellas win all the matches in rinse & repeat fashion. Watch below:

Without even watching the match, you would know exactly what happened and thus, it doesn’t even bear reviewing. You know those horror movie rules in ‘Scream’? Well here are the rules for ECW Divas matches:

A) If Katie Lea is in the match, she is most definitely going to lose.
B) If either Brie or Nikki have a singles match, they are most definitely going to switch places for the finish.
C) The fans will be bored to effin’ death & won’t give a flying fudge because they’ve seen it all before.

Pretty much sums up this entire match, no? Rinse, repeat, bore.

It doesn’t help matters that the Bella Twins are awful in the ring and their ring gear is so ~f**king distracting~ I guess I should be over it by now, but seriously all the red is puke-inducing. Please Bellas, switch it up. A little bit of black — even if it is just your boots — would make it less nauseating. I really, honestly do feel nauseated when I see them. The ruffled arm bands, the boot covers, the flower in the hair… too much going on, DNW.

As for the match, you’ve seen it all before. It wasn’t as terrible as Brie vs Katie, it seems Nikki got all the wrestling competency in this duo. She’s comfortable in the ring & has good athleticism. She does start out with an awkward looking monkey flip, but then does a Gail Kim-like jump through the ropes when Katie comes charging at her. She then follows this through with a nice looking sunset flip.

Katie now takes control of the match, grounding Nikki while Brie screams on the outside [you can stop now]. She uses some cool chokehold using her leg on the ropes, before doing a similar move that we saw once before in the corner. Fast forward a little bit… Nikki begins to mount a comeback but Katie hits a nice samoan drop on her, not something we see everyday from the Divas.

Blah blah, skip to the finish and Brie switches with Katie and wins with a crossbody. Katie must be really weak if Nikki can kick out of a samoan drop, but she’s put away with a crossbody. That’s WWE for you! I feel like we should rework that “hos over bros” saying, “models over wrestlers.”

In all, this match was the equivalent of a first class ticket to Yawnsville. Though I am thankful it was Nikki and not Brie in the match.

Hermie’s Hotseat with Alissa Flash

7

Since joining the TNA roster, it seems as though Alissa Flash has been criminally overlooked. Making her debut in a stellar match-up with Sarita, we have seen little of Flash since then, despite being one of the more compelling characters from the little we’ve seen of her on TV.

However, for Alissa Flash fans perhaps this can be of some consolation, as she is the latest guest on Hermie Sadler’s Emmy-worthy *cough* Hermie’s Hotseat.

It’s always important for the stars to be able to handle all aspects of being in the public eye — speaking engagements included. I always enjoy watching out of character interviews and such with the Divas/Knockouts, to see how well they fare, as I doubt they get the same media training as ‘real’ celebrities. Alissa does a good job here of coming across relaxed and personable, like Sarita who was on the show two weeks ago. Alissa looks good also; she owns the hairstyle and has made it her own, the top and jeans are a nice simple mix. The heavy eye make-up is a little distracting however, you can barely see her eyes!

On the subject of Alissa though, it seems like it’s been a rocky road for one of the newer Knockouts. While Sarita and more recently, Hamada have gotten their feet wet, Alissa has seemingly got lost in the shuffle since her critically acclaimed match with Sarita. She has been seen infrequently since, not exactly the best way to get over a new talent, especially one as talented as Alissa. Sure, she has to double-up as Raisha Saeed but I feel there’s more substance to the Alissa character and that’s the one that should take precedence. As I said on this week’s Roundtable, I feel Flash could be a marketable star that could fit into the top heel role left behind by Angelina Love.

Where Are They Now?: Jazz

6

Former Women’s Champion, Jazz – real name Carlene Begnaud – is working on a biography with her husband, Rodney Mack discussing their careers. The couple welcomed twins earlier this year.

Elsewhere, the duo are also promoting a wrestling show on September 19th in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Last month, we revealed that there was some TNA interest in the two-time Women’s Champion. TNA management had approached those who may know Begnaud in order to contact her about coming in, Begnaud and Mack had somewhat fallen off the wrestling radar at the time.

Angelina Love ‘Expected at Raw Next Week’ + More on Visa Issues

38

angelina3

Former TNA Knockouts Champion, Angelina Love is expected to be present backstage at Raw next week, when the show emanates from Toronto. Love, who was released by TNA last week due to a visa issue, is reportedly back in Canada and is expected to visit the show hosted by legend, Trish Stratus as a guest reports the Wrestling Observer.

The troubled ex-Knockout, real name Lauren ‘Angel’ Williams isn’t expected to be working the show or after a contract, rather visiting friends as many ex-WWE Superstars do.

In an update to Williams’ visa status, the Observer reports that sources say she was working without a valid visa for the two years she was in TNA and the company never bothered to apply for one for her. Many TNA talents from overseas [i.e. Mexico] come into the country under tourist visas to work shows and have to hope that they aren’t caught working in the country, obviously that’s an entirely different visa — a work visa.

If investigated, Williams could be banned from the United States for two years and be forced to forfeit any income she has gained working illegally in the States.

As our own Krissy Vaine revealed on last week’s Roundtable, Angelina was cut from her WWE contract in 2005 just a short while after relocating to Louisville, Kentucky to train at OVW. She had just taken out a one year lease on her apartment when she was let go.

Shelly Martinez: “Cannabis Saved My Life”

12

shelly

Former WWE Diva [Ariel] and TNA Knockout [Salinas], Shelly Martinez has come forward and openly discussed her use of cannabis, for the first time. She says she turned to it to help alleviate her prescription drug problem in an article for Paul Heyman’s Heyman Hustle website.

“I realized I was an addict after I had a near-fatal overdose. I almost died,” Shelly recalled, “and I am here to give credit to what saved my life.”

“Cannabis saved my life,” Shelly states in the new video entitled “The Weed Chronicles,” which you can preview exclusively here on THE HEYMAN HUSTLE. “I was going to die,” Shelly stated, “No doubt about it. I was on the wrong path. Now, I’m healthy, happy, pain free, and here to sing the praises of how my life is so much better today because of Cannabis!”

Update on Courtney Taylor

4

courtney1

Fans will have seen from last night’s episode of ECW, Courtney Taylor‘s role as backstage interviewer was taken over by Angela Fong under the new name of Savannah. As noted, this likely leads to speculation over what will become of Taylor. WWE.com posted a new photoshoot featuring the rookie Diva, real name Beverly Mullins, today which should suggest that Taylor isn’t on the chopping block.

Some of the speculation since last night among fans could prove to be substantial and makes sense; one argument is that Courtney could be moved to Raw to replace Lilian Garcia, a role which at one point had been pegged for Angela Fong. Taylor has shown comfortability on the microphone and has a similar look to Garcia [though younger], so she could almost seamlessly fit in on Monday nights.

Meanwhile, as a backstage interviewer Angela — who has been considered the standout female wrestler in FCW — could branch out into a wrestling role like Maria and Eve before her. The ring announcing position seems more of a pigeon-hole for the Diva that should succeed Lilian, who finishes up on September 21st.

Another observation from one reader also seems like a valid option: moving Courtney to Raw and/or SmackDown in the same role. For those unaware, the backstage interviewing on both shows is currently done by ECW announcer Josh Mathews. Needless to say, having an announcer doing double duty as an interviewer for the other shows doesn’t really translate well on TV, announcers are generally exclusive to their brand much like the actual Superstars and Divas.

Whatever the plan is, it looks as though Courtney still has a spot on the roster.

The standout star, who has been touted as the best female talent in developmental, just taped a backstage interview segment under the name Savannah. She interviewed ECW Champion, Christian and Tommy Dreamer.

Raw Redux (September 7th, 2009) – The Price is Wrong, Bitch!

20

raw07sept09

It was a bittersweet episode of Raw last night. On the one hand, Bob Barker was a lot of fun but on the other hand, you just knew with Barker hosting Raw most, if not all the Divas would be relegated to ‘Barker Beauties’. And lo-and-behold, that’s exactly what happened. In fact, WWE felt there weren’t enough ‘Beauties’ on Raw, they decided to import the Bella Twins from ECW — with no explanation, I might add. I guess they have to earn their paycheck somehow.

Seeing them last night made me realise just how jealous I am of them, it must feel pretty great to get paid a ton just to coast along and do little to no work. It’s not their fault however, but in an economic downturn, shouldn’t WWE be putting all their stars to work to justify their wages? The Bellas get to travel the country, look pretty, hardly ever wrestle and get paid! Like I said: jealous.

So I don’t even have anything to write about in this week’s Redux because there wasn’t a match! I think WWE’s logic is that they had two matches last week, so they can afford to skip this week. Plus with the ultimate Diva, Trish Stratus hosting Raw next week — those stupid Diva fans, they get Trish next week, that’s enough ‘Divas action’ to justify not putting them on last night. Somehow I doubt Trish will get quite as much screen time as Bob Barker did last night, though. I fear also, that next week’s Raw may be a throwaway in the Diva stakes. If Trish really were really the booker and it wasn’t scripted, one would assume she’d want to put over the Divas and give them a prominent role next week. But because Raw is scripted, the writers will probably put Trish in a match as our quota-filling Divas bout next week. Sure it’ll be nice and nostalgic to see Trish wrestle again but Raw is already in a lull and we need some semblance of storyline to break this holding pattern. Honestly, I am not expecting anything out of the norm that will champion the women’s division next week, even though the guest host is a legendary former Diva that was once part of said division. That’s WWE writers for ya…

Speaking of Trish, she is the first female guest host of Raw since the gimmick began in July. So what do you do? You tack on a much hyped guest appearance from an injured top Superstar! Because God forbid, a woman… A WOMAN… is not a big enough draw on her own. Yes Trish, not even you — the quintessential, legendary Diva — can be trusted to carry Raw on your own. Even though she has more personality than most of the past guest hosts and will be more exciting to watch than Dusty Rhodes’, Sergeant Slaughter’s, Jeremy Piven’s and Freddie Prinze Jr’s weeks combined! It just shows how much faith WWE has in a female guest host, even the most popular female wrestler of all time, can’t get a show to herself without the added Batista appearance. Don’t be surprised if over the next week, the Batista announcement gets more hype from WWE than Trish Stratus as guest host.

With Kelly, Jillian, Rosa and extra added flavour in the Bella Twins, four Divas were left off the show and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank God they were! Alicia Fox, Beth Phoenix, Gail Kim and Mickie James were given the shove last night and perhaps it was for the better. I’m actually a little surprised they decided not to use Alicia Fox when she fits the same ‘Barker Beauty’ model role they used Kelly, Rosa and the Bellas for. But I think  Alicia should be flattered and consider it a compliment, considering the company she’s in with the other Divas that got snubbed. It suggests to me that Alicia isn’t seen as a ‘model’ by WWE anymore and in my eyes, that’s a good thing. She has too much potential and talent as a wrestler to be doing double duty that kind of degrades the progress she’s making.

Anyway for the rest of this week’s Redux, I am going to critique the Divas we did see in a ‘Best & Worst Dressed’ of Raw. And in honour of Bob Barker hosting Raw, instead of ‘Best’ and ‘Worst’, I’ll use ‘Right’ and ‘Wrong’. Follow the cut for more:

Lilian Garcia’s Final Raw Confirmed

8

lilian1

Decade Diva, Lilian Garcia has confirmed her final date with WWE on her Twitter page. The Raw ring announcer will be leaving in two weeks time — her final Raw will be Monday, September 21st.

There had been rumours that Garcia may host her final Raw, a guest host for the 21st has yet to be announced.

In the run up to her departure, Garcia will be reunited next week with a Diva whom she helped send off in an emotional post-match celebration three years ago — Trish Stratus. Hopefully we’ll see Trish return the favour next week!

Needless to say, it should be a fun yet tearful final two Raws for Lilian!

Natalya: “My Time Will Come”

14

natalya-wood-shoot

Arguably the best female wrestler on the WWE roster right now, fans and critics alike have been wondering just why third-generation Diva, Natalya hasn’t shot to the top of the women’s division. Well the SmackDown Diva has spoken out, in an interview with SunSport, saying ‘her time will come’:

“I think sometimes if you get something too quickly it’s not a lot of fun.

“For me it’s about proving myself and proving my worth when I get that opportunity.

“I do feel like my time will come and when it does I will represent my family — my father, my uncle Bret, my uncles that have passed on — and prove that I am one of the best female wrestlers in the history of sports entertainment.”

Tyson agreed, adding: “A lot of WWE Divas have risen up pretty fast in the past but I don’t see many of them around anymore.

“Natalya hasn’t had a chance to show everyone what she’s made of yet, or myself and David.

“It’s just a slow, slow progression whereas I would rather have had a meteoric rise.”

Nattie does make a valid point, her uncle Bret only reached his pinnacle [the WWE Championship] at the age of 35 says the article. But as well know, for the women in the industry — specifically WWE — there is a shorter shelf life.

It is true that a lot of Divas that have shot to the top too soon haven’t had longevity [Candice Michelle] and even the ones that are still at the top like Mickie James are considered ‘stale’. However, I just can’t help wonder if Natalya will end up going the way of her former BFF, Victoria. WWE has shown little interest in giving her a substantial spot in the women’s division despite a strong start upon her debut. At least Victoria had a couple of years of success before becoming a jobber to the ‘flavours of the month’ but for Nattie, it was a couple of months of success.

It’s hard to be patient when so many talented girls like Natalya and Gail continue to ‘bubble under’ with no sign of nurturing for an eventual ‘big break’.

Angelina Love’s Agent Issues First Statement on Release

16

angelina2

A representative for recently released TNA Knockout, Angelina Love‘s agent, Michael Klyzub has issued the first statement since her shocking departure from the company last week. The rep attempts to clear up exaggerated rumours that have been circulating in the 72 hours since news broke — which we have made a point not to cover.

Klyzub says:

As per usual, stories found on the internet have been grossly over stated and misinformed. Effective Thursday September 3, Angel Williams performing as Angelina Love in TNA had parted ways with the company. This separation was based purely on a miscommunication of Angel Williams present Visa Status. This in no way has anything to do with Contract Disputes or trouble with the office as has been reported. I want to stress the fact that once this Visa issue is cleaned up Angel is welcomed back to TNA Wrestling with open arms.

At this time I cannot and will not address any of the other rumors that are circulating with regards to the type of Visa issues, concerns of gaining employment with the competition nor will I address any other rumors. I will say that most of what is on the internet is inaccurate and that the fans should rest assured that Angel Williams the performer will be returning to the ring in no time at all.

We greatly appreciate all the fan support and look forward to having this issue resolved shortly.

In the time since Love’s release was announced, overblown rumours have been circulating including speculation over her status as an illegal alien. Hopefully this does some damage control for those who choose to read such ‘newz’. We’ll discuss this and Love’s release more on this week’s Roundtable which will be available soon.
