WrestleMania Spotlight: Eve Torres

3

With the Divas Battle Royal at WrestleMania 25 quickly approaching, Diva Dirt has decided to take a closer look at each of the known and rumored participants in the matchup and assess their odds of winning as being High, Moderate, or Low. The winner, of course, will be crowned the first ever “Miss WrestleMania.” This is a new feature that will take place right up until the big day in Houston, TX on April 5th, 2009 and will be covered by yours truly, the “Mouth of the South,” Hassan! I will save my prediction for the winner as the very last WrestleMania Spotlight profile I do. Be sure to leave your opinion in the comments! Let’s get right into it… presenting SmackDown Diva Eve Torres!

Diva: Eve Torres
Real Name: Eve Torres
Hometown: Denver, Colorado
Birthday: May 5, 1984
Brand: SmackDown
Height: 5’8″
Weight: 131 lbs.
Finisher: Handspring Back Elbow Smash
WWE Debut: February 1, 2008 edition of SmackDown
Career Highlights: 2007 Diva Search Winner, appeared in Latina and Muscle & Fitness magazines and an episode of Sunset Tan, a Million Dollar Dancer on Show Me The Money, guest-starred in Days of Our Lives, The Drop, and The Underground, was on the LA Clippers Spirit Dance Team, USC Fly Girl
“Did You Know?” Fact: Eve can solve a 3 x 3 x 3 Rubik’s Cube in under 5 minutes, as demonstrated when she appeared on The Best Damn Sports Show Period in November 2007. She is also trained in Jiu-Jitsu and holds a blue belt

Eve Torres came onto the scene with the 2007 Diva Search, which many are speculating could be the last Diva Search that the WWE holds (though I doubt it). After winning the competition, Eve was sent to OVW in January of 2008 to begin her wrestling training, instead of being sent straight to the ring with no experience (cough).

Her literal in-ring debut came on Raw when she appeared in the 16-Diva tag team match. Her team lost, but she was never even tagged in, so it’s hard to count that. Aside from participating in the SmackDown Divas Contest, the Lumberjill Match at WrestleMania 24, and the Costume Contest at Cyber Sunday 2008, Eve has been seen on SmackDown, but only backstage as an interviewer. Her first storyline involved Michelle McCool‘s heel turn, when she was attacked in the ring. This led to her first real in-ring debut, where she lost to Michelle. The feud continued with Eve tagging with Maria to take on Maryse and Michelle, where her team lost again. The Divas Battle Royal will be Eve’s third official matchup.

I don’t think anyone is going to make bets on Eve for WrestleMania. I will, however, say that she is definitely my pick for the “one to watch.” Last year, I made this prediction about Maryse and look where she ended up! Eve really just doesn’t have the experience or an in-depth character just yet to win such a big match. There are other Divas on the roster who are going to be put over and last longer than Eve. Sure, it’s just the title of  “Miss WrestleMania,” and they might as well give the winner a tacky pretty crown too, but right now is just not Eve’s time.

She’s presently serving as Maria’s BFF and basically getting her butt kicked in the ring by Michelle and Maryse just for being that (can’t say I blame them!). But I will point out that even though Eve’s only been in the ring twice, she’s much more enjoyable to watch than her BFF counterpart. She is trained in Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and she is an accomplished dancer, so she was never completely brainless about being an athlete and it shows in the ring. She looks to me like she has the drive to make it, but she just needs time to polish it up. No one starts out amazing right off the bat, except me ;) , so that’s why I think Eve is definitely going to improve and rise up. She’s already got a pretty good moveset, she can hold her own weight, and she can carry a match. I think it’s all the ingredients to make a success story, but unfortunately, it won’t be at WrestleMania.

Eve’s Odds of Winning On The Hassan-O-Meter: Low

Don’t You Know There Ain’t No Devil, That’s Just God When He’s Drunk

We interrupt your regularly scheduled “WTF”-ery to bring you Katie Lea‘s latest photoshoot, “Angel Eyes”. I’m not too fond of the top, the strange little vest thingy, or the gloves – it’s a little too Hot Topic – but it’s nice to see she’s hearkening back to her brother’s past life as a Jack Sparrow ripoff by wearing pirate boots (okay, maybe not..). The random inclusion of a cargo box kind of clashes with the gothic look (gothic =/= grungy), and it doesn’t fit in at all. Still, her poses pull the whole thing together. If she were to run with the gothic persona, she could definitely pull it off.

LMFAO Part 2: When Diva Search Rejects Go Broke

5

amyvsjoy

I don’t know about you guys, but today is shaping up to be ROFLtastic. Between Jimmy Hart’s Wrestlicious and this, it’s either a dark day for women’s wrestling or if you’re like me and Erin, you take some perverse pleasure in it all.

Former Diva Search rejects, Amy Weber and Joy Giovanni have resorted to making a pseudo-fetish wrestling DVD, entitled Amy vs Joy. The pair were part of the 2004 Diva Search which was eventually won by Christy Hemme. However soon after the Search was over, the pair, along with the real winners of that particular season – Maria and Michelle McCool – were signed up by WWE. Both eventually left the company in 2005.

Looks like the recession has hit these two hard as they resort to selling themselves on DVD. You can check out the official website for what I’m sure will be a hotly in-demand event, by clicking here.

It’s funny how time flies! I remember like yesterday, these two ‘tards making fools of themselves on national television in the ‘Diss the Diva’ contest. The out-and-out bullying of Carmella DeCesare was cruel but I guess she’s got the last laugh since she’s now married to an NFL linebacker and in the money?

Then there’s the comparisons to the likes of Christy, Maria and Michelle. Of the lot, I would say Michelle is the true winner of the Class of 2004. She’s managed to shake her ‘Diva Search’ tag and is doing big things in WWE.

LMFAO Make Sure You’re Sitting Down…

I think I just had a coronary. Legendary manager, Jimmy Hart has lined up his own women’s wrestling promotion to debut later this year called Wrestlicious. Yes, you read right. And the laughs don’t stop there. Check out this HI-LARIOUS promo clip. You really do have to see it to believe it…

Oh dear Lord. Familiar names include Leyla Milani and Lacey Von Erich. Leyla, who was the runner up in the 2005 Diva Search, will serve as co-host with Hart. The logo reminds me of the hot dogs they sell at my local cinema, click here.

WrestleMania Spotlight: Alicia Fox

I will save my prediction for the winner as the very last WrestleMania Spotlight profile I do. Be sure to leave your opinion in the comments! Let’s get right into it… dancing her way up next is ECW Diva Alicia Fox!

Diva: Alicia Fox
Real Name: Victoria Crawford
Hometown: Tampa, Florida
Birthday: June 30, 1986
Brand: ECW
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 120 lbs.
Finisher: Axe Kick
WWE Debut: June 13, 2008 edition of SmackDown
Career Highlights: OVW Women’s Champion
“Did You Know?” Fact: Alicia’s OVW Women’s Championship reign lasted only one day, since she won it at a houseshow and her win was not officially recognized. She lost it the following night to Beth Phoenix

Though she’s been in developmental training since July 1, 2006, Alicia Fox didn’t enter a WWE ring until January 6, 2009 when she lost to Katie Lea on ECW. Despite losing, Alicia put on an amazing show for it being her first match. She sent the WWE Universe in a frenzy when she demonstrated she could very easily beat the likes of Maria, who is pushed far more than she probably deserves.

Coming from the same modeling agency as Kelly Kelly, KindIndustries.com, Alicia Fox has also come from zero wrestling history to being a consistent performer in the ring. When OVW and WWE severed ties, Alicia was sent over to FCW, where she is a fan favorite and continues to impress wrestling fans. She made it to the finals of the Queen of FCW Tournament, where she put on a match with Angela Fong that rivals some of the matches seen on Raw or SmackDown.

To sum it up, impressive would be an understatement when describing Alicia’s progress in the ring. So far on ECW, Alicia has defeated Katie Lea in tag team action, but hasn’t been in the ring since her loss to Natalya, where she showed that she is ready to go head to head with even the most veteran and skilled of Divas, like Natalya. She may have lost the match, but we were all winners; Alicia is definitely an up and coming star and destined to hold Championship gold in the future.

Despite this, I think Alicia is too new of a Diva to win the Battle Royal. Besides, she is not involved in any serious storyline at the moment other than being DJ Gabriel’s valet to the ring. If only she would have some kind of a run-in with Vickie Guerrero, I’m sure it would spark some kind of interesting storyline. After all, Alicia was Vickie’s wedding planner when she initially came on SmackDown back in June of 2008. Alicia even played a pivotol role in the Great American Bash main event, where she tried to help Edge and had Vickie Guerrero speared.

Until she gets some kind of character development other than waltzing down to the ring, Alicia Fox will probably not be put over the likes of other Divas, though expect her to really showcase her talent and probably eliminate a Diva or two!

FCW Recap: March 19, 2009

fcw

This past week, FCW held another one of its weekly events for our future Divas. Building off the Queen of FCW Tournament storyline, Angela Fong and Rosa Mendes finally met in the ring, one-on-one. Of course, that plastic crown continues to be the center of Rosa’s attention. Aside from that, we were once again treated to another one of the Octo-Mom’s Jenny Cash‘s Oscar-worthy gossip segments; a “segment we could live without” in Jenny’s own words, although she won’t let us! Chaaaaaaaaaaaa-ching!

Jenny Cash’s Gossip Segment

Angela Fong vs. Rosa Mendes

I have to say, I watched this match twice and I was still left rather unopinionated about it. I didn’t really like the match, but I can’t say I hated it either. It was nice to finally have these two face off without disruptions or having to tag out to their male tag teams. Rosa immediately went to grab Angela’s sparkly crown which initiated the matchup.

Rosa pretty much dominated the match, but she wasn’t entirely impressive. It appeared her toss of Angela out the ring seemed to be legit and Angela either sold the hit really well or took a bad fall onto the outside floor. Looks like Rosa is practicing her ring-tossing skills for the upcoming Divas Battle Royal at WrestleMania 25 just over a week away; she’s going to need all the practice she can get if she wants to survive that match and not look completely clueless, since it wil be her WWE in-ring debut.

Angela usually has a great offense and a flexible moveset, but she really just let Rosa control the entire match. She had her Matrix-like ducking to avoid Rosa’s attack, but other than that, she remained pretty lifeless, almost as if she was being Rosa’s practice dummy for WrestleMania. Of course, with Angela being the Queen of FCW and a face, she had to win the matchup, so at the last second she pulled out a Sake Bomb and picked up the win.

I guess it was good to see these Divas in the ring again, but overall, it was a pretty lackluster match for two Divas who have been training as long as these two have. Rosa especially better step up her game if she wants to make it on Raw!

This week’s FCW Rating: 5/10

WrestleMania Spotlight: Kelly Kelly

Let’s get right into it… here is Raw Diva Kelly Kelly!

Diva: Kelly Kelly
Real Name: Barbara Jean “Barbie” Blank
Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida
Birthday: January 15, 1987
Brand: Raw
Height: 5’5″
Weight: 108 lbs.
Finisher: K2 (Leg Drop Bulldog), Kelly Killer (Handspring Back Elbow Smash)
WWE Debut: June 13, 2006 edition of  the very first ECW broadcast
Career Highlights: appeared in Timbaland’s Throw It On Me music video, been in FHM magazine, guest starred on an episode of Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp as well as the British soccer show Soccer AM, Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Model, Pro Wrestling Illustrated‘s #32 of the 50 best female wrestlers of 2008
“Did You Know?” Fact: Kelly Kelly, a former broadcast journalism major, is the youngest WWE Diva

Kelly Kelly has literally gone from zero to Diva. Pulled straight from a magazine with absolutely no wrestling training, Kelly has transformed herself from an exhibitionist to one of Raw’s prominent Divas.

Kelly came onto the scene when ECW was first made into a weekly show and had her own segment, called Kelly’s Expose. She soon became a valet to then-boyfriend Mike Knox, and eventually found her way to the ring. On ECW, Kelly got the chance to further practice skills she learned in OVW. She won her first singles match by defeating Ariel, but wasn’t so lucky on other occasions. She definitely was on WWE’s good side and they clearly saw potential in her, because other Divas in her position probably would’ve ended up released.

When Layla and Brooke came onto the scene, Extreme Expose took on full form. Kelly pretty much gave up wrestling and instead did weekly choreographed dance routines for several months. Her eventual crush on Balls Mahoney and disinterest in Extreme Expose’s contract owner, the Miz, led to her leaving the group. Brooke’s release from the WWE set up the ongoing feud between Layla and Kelly. Both had little experience in the ring, but with time, both Divas became more and more polished.

The 2008 Draft saw the departure of both Kelly and Layla to Raw, where Kelly has become one of the WWE’s top faces. She is still not as refined a wrestler as other Divas, but she has proved to everyone that she won’t give up and with each passing week, becomes a better athlete. She’s been called “the next Trish Stratus” in that with time, she will become a top wrestler and WWE’s main Diva.

Although I don’t particularly like calling her Trish 2.0, I think she is definitely going places. The Battle Royal could be the perfect opportunity for the WWE to continue pushing Kelly into the top spot and prepare her for an eventual title run in the future. What better way to become the new Golden Girl of the WWE than to beat and dethrone the former one, Trish Stratus? I could definitely see an upset happening and Kelly winning the match to establish herself as the next big thing.

Which Bella’s With Who?

8

briebella nikkibella

In case you didn’t know, the Bella Twins are no longer friends. Boo-hoo. Family counselling. Which means we are now obligated to be able to tell them apart here at Diva Dirt, yup no more winging it! So instead of sending a private memo to our writers, we thought if we have to figure out which one’s which, you should too! So sit at your desks. Spit out your gum. Class is in session…

I shall use fabulous pictorial examples from last night’s episode of ECW, as you can see above. On the left standing next to a mariachi band member looking Primo Colon, is Brie Bella who we shall dub the Good Bella. And by deduction we must assume (unless there’s a third twin) that Nikki Bella is the one next to The Miz, who we shall dub the Bad Bella.

Okay, now pop quiz…
– The Bella in a threesome with Carlito & Primo is…
– The Bella in a threesome with Miz & Morrison is…

Class dismissed.

Natalya’s a Hitman (But in a Good Way)

1

Natalya‘s getting into her Hart roots in her new photoshoot, “Pink Obsession”. She’s wearing the trademark pink, and while it’s not something Bret would wear (as I recall, he was partial to singlets as opposed to belly-bearing tops), it’s certainly a clever female spin on his attire. It almost escapes into the realm of an ice skating outfit, but I like it – even the fact that her pants match the highlights in her hair doesn’t detract me. Now, maybe if she tossed on a pair of Bret’s trademark sunglasses – now THAT would get an “ew” out of me.

Hold Your Horses: ECW Divas Night Back On?

3

Now, it’s understandable if at this point you’ve got whiplash, what with the fate of the now-infamous ECW all-Divas special flip flopping back and forth faster than a Olympic ping pong match. However, it looks like it still may happen – just not tonight (obviously, unless they hop into the Delorean). WWE.com has footage exclusive to their WWE Mobile subscribers (AKA not us) posted after tonight’s show that confirms that the all-Divas show is still very much a possibility:

After this week’s ECW on Sci Fi, ECW General Manager Theodore Long told his assistant, Tiffany, to submit a proposal for her brilliant idea – an all-Divas episode of ECW. Then, fellow Divas Alicia Fox, Katie Lea Burchill and Natalya offered Tiffany plenty of ideas for the episode.

Until the actual footage pops up, this is what we have to go on. But if you ask me, it’s much more promising than the visual of an unhinged Vince McMahon axing the show at the last moment. Hooray Divas!

Vince Behind Divas Night Axe?

8

Last week we all rejoiced at the announcement of an all-Divas special of ECW tonight. Lats night, our hopes were dashed as the show was taped without nary a mention of the proposed Divas special. The past 24 hours have been confusing to say the least…

Well now maybe we can offer a little explanation. Word has it that Vince McMahon himself was behind the axe of the ECW Divas Night as he “didn’t see the point.” Meanwhile, it was Stephanie McMahon that pushed for the special to take place.

Say what you will about Steph, her and her husband may be poison to the business or they may be saints, but never let it be said that Stephanie isn’t a supporter of the Divas. A number of past Divas have praised Steph for wanting to promote a strong vision of women on WWE television. The key word there being wanting, as we all know from the abundance of Bra & Panties matches and Lingerie Pillowfights in the past, that strong vision has never really come to fruition.

New Knockout Already Has Chip on Her Shoulder

9

She’s only been in the business a few weeks and she’s already acting like a diva (no pun intended)! New TNA Knockout, Jenna Morasca has taken to her MySpace (what else!) with a rant on wrestling fans who have badmouthed her joining TNA. I guess that would apply to us too?

While the whole blog is just a fascinating read (check it out after the cut), here is my favourite part:

I know some people say “mockery” are you talking about wrestling!? Yes I know sometime the storylines in wrestling get little cheesy but that does not take away the sheer athleticism of the people involved. So finally once and for all I took the job because I enjoy wrestling, have major respect for everyone involved, was excited to try something new, and can’t WAIT to get in the ring! So all the haters- suck on that…

What I particularly love here is the creative license taken to paint herself with the same brush as the actual wrestlers. You know… the ones that have trained for years. Worked up through the independents.

Jenna: You’re not Trish Stratus, hell you ain’t even fit to lick Maria’s boots. Once you’ve been in the business for as long as they have, you can start complaining. Whiny diva antics may make good reality television, but you won’t last long in the wrestling business.

PS: Threatening bodyslams? Oh noes! The ‘wrestler’ who can’t wrestle is gonna bodyslam me!

Not So Breaking News: The Divas Get Some Shine On “Superstars”

7

divasdraft

I’m sure this is common knowledge by now, but for those who have been living under a rock I’ll fill you in. Shortly after WrestleMania (April 16th), WWE will be introducing a brand new show to its programming. “WWE Superstars” will be a hour long, tri-branded show shown on WGN America. (Which I don’t get. Grrr.)

It was originally thought that the show would feature lesser utilized Superstars and Divas a la Sunday Night Heat, but recent reports say otherwise. According to WWE, “Superstars” will feature prominent Superstars and Divas as well as lesser used ones. The new show will also have its own storylines.

I think this is a great idea personally. This show could lead to Diva feuds that we always wished for finally happening. Beth vs Maryse, Mickie vs Michelle, Alicia vs Kelly…. Oh, the possibilities! Too bad WWE decided to show it on a low rated channel that NOBODY GETS! I hope WWE plans to air it online as well.

So what Divas would you like to see face off? Leave your ideas in the comments. To see if you get WGN America in your area(probably not), click here.

Maryse is Charlie’s Missing Angel

10

Maryse is rocking the Farrah Fawcett ‘do in her new photoshoot, “Golden Goddess”. And if you don’t know what that is, congratulations: you’re too young to be here. Regardless of whether or not she looks styled to fight crime for a disembodied voice, Maryse looks excellent. Her tights aren’t going to win her the “best dressed” award, that’s for sure, but she sticks to a certain look, and for some reason, it works for her. The cape and fake studs would look ridiculous on most other Divas, but I can’t find fault with Maryse for wearing it. Maybe because she wears it so casually instead of waving her eccentricities in our faces (*cough*), it doesn’t look so bad. Now she just needs to strike a fightin’ pose and get to work.

Raw Redux – March 23, 2009

6

rawredux23march09

Well I guess you can’t really accuse WWE of not building up to the Divas battle royal at WrestleMania 25, because that’s exactly what it was about on Raw this week. Except it was a buildup no-one actually wanted to see. Instead we get shits-and-giggles booking with Santino wanting to take part in the Miss WrestleMania match. Instead of announcing some of the legends that will take part in order to actually push the event to us Diva fans, it looks like we’re get a Santino-centric build instead. Funny that, considering he’s not even a Diva.

Then there’s the ropes and hog-tying, a nice little blast from the past for Mickie James there. It’s true what they say, all the skills you pick up in the past can be useful in your career. Who knew Mickie’s fetish tricks would find use on Raw?

Without taking into consideration that WrestleMania is just under two weeks away, this match was a nice little comedy skit. It did provoke a few laughs, so in that respect it works. But with ‘Mania around the corner, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for the Divas. Not to mention, an intergender match does leave one a little ‘shortchanged’ when that’s your load of Divas action for the week (on Raw).

It was nice to see the attention back on Mickie James for a change. I love Melina and she is the Women’s Champion, but it is cool to see them mix it up and give Mickie some time this week. And it didn’t hurt to have Melina at ringside. I guess they never really explained why Kelly or Melina were at ringside with Mickie, which makes it a little odd considering they usually love to spell everything out for the audience. We know why they were there, they just didn’t make it explicit.

Not much else to discuss here, to be honest. I’m guessing Santino may get a second shot at redemption next week against Melina or Kelly? I have a feeling he will eventually get into the match now that Candice has been dropped.

RAW: MICKIE JAMES VS SANTINO

Like “Space Jam”, but Without the Talking Cartoon Characters

0

Well, for those of you who were upset at the lack of Candice, Maryse, or Kelly in last week’s “March Madness: First Round” photoshoot, you can go ahead and have your hissy fit, because the “Second Round” is up, and it’s the same Divas as last time, just different poses. There’s not much to say, as it’s not too different. Although, I must say that Michelle McCool has probably already won the title for “Dumbest Pose of the Year” with that one where she’s sitting IN the hoop. Really? REALLY? Sigh.. Maybe there will be more Divas coming along in photoshoots for the Elite Eight and Final Four. I hope so, because it looks like the inspirational well has run dry for some of these girls.

Breaking: Divas Night Might Be Scrapped!

14

Although last week’s ECW on SciFi featured a backstage segment with GM Teddy Long and assistant Tiffany where it was announced that this week’s ECW would be dedicated to the Divas, it seems as though this has been cancelled!

ECW has released a match listing and a preview for Tuesday’s ECW, and it is definitely not dedicated to the Divas. In fact, numerous other sources are reporting that DirecTV’s listed preview for ECW only mentions that ECW Champion Jack Swagger will be making an appearance. The announced card for the event is listed as Jack Swagger & Tyson Kidd vs. Tommy Dreamer and Evan Bourne, Morrison vs Carlito, and MVP’s VIP Lounge… and that’s it! If the WWE decides to have the Divas mentioned to hype the Battle Royal, it will probably only be for a segment or two at the most since there won’t be a whole lot of empty time in between those matches.

ECW will be taped tonight following Raw, so what officially happens will remain to be seen. If it doesn’t happen tonight, then next week’s ECW is the last chance to do Divas Night before WrestleMania 25 on April 5. It’s still a possibility… but who knows! WWE never even mentioned anything about Divas Night on WWE.com!

Looking back, though, when Howard Finkel blogged about Divas Night, he said that Tiffany “had a great idea for an upcoming episode of ECW” and never technically said it would be this week. In the actual clip, Tiffany says Divas Night would be “one night” for the Divas. I guess there’s still a chance of it happening next week, but regardless, there is no Divas Night this week! Let’s just hope it’s not really cancelled!

Gail Kim’s Toughest Challenge Yet: The WWE Audience

14

gail2

The first ever TNA Knockouts Champion has faced some tough challenges. In TNA Gail Kim faced off against Awesome Kong on more than one occassion. Then there’s the Six Sides of Steel. The street fights. And that ladder match. Gail broke barriers for women’s wrestling and helped bring the Knockouts division to prosperity. To us knowledgable Diva fans, she is a pioneer. But now miles away from TNA, Gail Kim finds herself in a unique situation: a familiar-yet-unfamiliar territory.

Back in the WWE and her SmackDown debut pending, this is Kim’s second run with the company. However the business and audience has changed vastly in the five years that Gail has been absent. So much so that Gail must now face her toughest challenge yet – winning over a new generation of WWE fans.

Judging from recent SmackDown house show reports, you may as well erase Gail’s TNA lineage because the WWE audience barely knows who she is. It seems long gone are the ticket-buyers who saw Gail face off against the likes of Lita, Trish Stratus and Molly Holly. The current audience, feeble and talent-starved, are an audience that cheer their hearts out for the likes of Maria. No offense to Maria’s fans, but she’s hardly top-tier wrestling talent. Meanwhile, the likes of Beth Phoenix and Melina have found it hard to muster the same response as their Diva Search counterparts.

It is easier, with this audience, to get over as a gormless ‘hottie with a body’ than it is to get over as a truly talented, accomplished female wrestler. So as Gail Kim makes her return to the company, it’s almost as if WWE are introducing a brand new Diva – not one that is a former Women’s Champion.

The next few months will be a test for Kim, as she must be able to win over the new crowds that fill the arenas for WWE shows. We all know that Gail Kim is incredibly sexy but will she be able to turn it on to the same degree as Maria, Candice or Kelly Kelly? Gail is a wrestler first but it seems that her impressive in-ring skills won’t be enough for to win over this audience. And that truly is a shame.

What do you think? Will Gail be able to win over the new WWE audience?

Karl Lagerfeld, is That You?

6

Now, I usually praise someone for doing something different and unexpected, but Maria just looks plain crazy in her new photoshoot, “Beautiful in Black”. It’s quite obvious she’s trying to appear fashionably edgy, but it looks so slapdash that I think it couldn’t be more obvious how hard she’s trying, which kind of defeats the purpose. Her hair looks like a horse’s mane, and the faces she makes only augment that, if you know what I mean. Quite honestly, she looks like she’d be more at home on that “Rock of Love” show rather than any runway, and I’m counting those cat fashion shows they hold at your local mall. Sorry, but it’s getting ridiculous at this point.

Victoria’s WrestleMania Status

3

victoria5

Rumours began circulating this past weekend that WWE had contacted Victoria to appear at WrestleMania 25 on April 5th. Despite retiring from the company just earlier this year, in January, the word is that Victoria – real name Lisa Marie Varon – is still under contract to the WWE and thus chances of her appearing are likely.

Unlike Trish Stratus or Lita, Victoria was not at the end of her contract at the time of her retirement. Her leave came amid a slew of releases, thus it is likely that she and WWE agreed upon her release as Varon had talked about retiring last year. Therefore, rather than retiring at the end of her contract, Victoria was released from the company but WWE were gracious enough to let her retire rather than the standard ‘future endeavors’ message.

Like all ex-Superstars, it is likely that Lisa has a 90 day no-compete clause which would keep her bound to the company. That 90 day clause expires just a little after WrestleMania.

Candice Pulled From WrestleMania Card

wm25-gailOriginal promo featuring Candice and Gail

Bad news for Candice Michelle and her fans, looks like the former Women’s Champion will miss her second WrestleMania in a row. Candice has been out of action in recent weeks with an ankle injury.

The news has come to light as a replay of Raw aired last night, which showed the promo for the Miss WrestleMania match which originally aired on Monday. In that promo featured 19 current Divas including Candice and Gail Kim. In the replay, both were pulled from the promo.

In the case of Gail Kim, it’s likely damage control as Kim’s appearance in the original promo was pretty much a spoiler. It is highly likely that she will compete at WrestleMania.

However in the case of Candice, it looks as though she won’t be ring-ready by April 5th.

Gail Kim Joins House Show Circuit

gail2

SmackDown’s newest arrival, Gail Kim has now started work for WWE on the house show circuit. Gail made her house show debut in a tag team match, teaming her with Maria against Michelle McCool and Divas Champion, Maryse.

According to one fan report from PWInsider, it looks like Gail didn’t get much of a reaction from the crowd. Such a shame. We all know that the Divas are a tough sell in the WWE, but it’s horrible to see Gail going from being a pioneer in TNA to getting no reaction in WWE.

WrestleMania Spotlight: The Bella Twins

Let’s get right into it… I present to you SmackDown Divas Nikki & Brie Bella!

Diva: Nikki Bella / Brie Bella
Real Name: Nicole Garcia / Brianna Garcia
Hometown: Scottsdale, Arizona
Birthday: November 21, 1983
Brand: SmackDown
Height: 5’6″
Weight: 125 lbs.
Finisher:
Twinster Factor aka Ring My Bella (Sit-Down Facebuster)
WWE Debut:
August 29, 2008 edition of SmackDown (Brie) and November 7, 2008 edition of SmackDown (Nikki)
Career Highlights: Made first national appearance on an episode of FOX’s Meet My Folks, Budweiser World Cup Twins, Finalists of the International Body Doubles Twin Search, appeared in music video for Atreyus’ Right Side of the Bed, tried out for the 2006 Diva Search, #1 Yahoo Search in November 2008
“Did You Know?” Fact: Known as the “Mischievous Twin,” Nicole is actively involved in saving elephants. Brie, nicknamed the “Responsible Twin,” is very environmentally conscious. The Bella Twins did not use their real last names in the WWE out of respect to ring announcer Lilian Garcia

As much as I didn’t want to do these two together, there isn’t a whole lot to talk about in regards to each one individually. They came to the WWE as a package deal and there’s no real way to talk about one without the other. Though they have only recently split up, their storylines and matches all go hand in hand with each other, so I decided I’d combine them into one. Plus, we’re running out of time here and there’s not enough days before WrestleMania to give every Diva their own day ;)

That being said, I think everyone can pretty much guess that neither of the Bella Twins are going to be crowned Miss WrestleMania. They were just put into a rather interesting storyline involving the Miz & Morrison and Carlito & Primo, plus they haven’t really been active in the Divas division or the hunt for the Divas Championship. Their primary focus at WrestleMania is going to be in the Tag Team Title Unification Match involving their respective tag teams. Both sets of tag titles will be on the line and it is pretty much a guarantee that Nikki and Brie will be at ringside, although on opposite ends. I’m sure WWE is going to put their creative focus on the Bellas with the sister vs. sister gimmick, not the Divas division. Their breakup storyline is too new for either one of them have any sort of huge impact in the Battle Royal.

The real question is if or how they are going to impact the Tag Title unification match, and I think WWE is more concerned with their role in that match than they are in the Battle Royal. It will be obvious however that the Bellas are not going to be allies in the Battle Royal as would’ve previously been the case had they not broken up. Maybe they will start out with Nikki telling Brie they should work together and then settle it at the end between themselves when they are the final two, but Nikki, being the heel, will turn on Brie and try to eliminate her. Brie will get mad and end up countering one of Nikki’s moves and eliminating Nikki from the match. Then, while she is trash talking Nikki, someone will come and eliminate her and then the Twins will point fingers and blame the other for their elimination, then scuffle outside the ring.

I’m pretty sure that’s going to be the extent of the Bella Twins’ role in the Battle Royal. Better luck next year!

The Bella Twins’ Odds of Winning On The Hassan-O-Meter: Low

SHIMMER Spotlight: MsChif

mschif1

You know what time it is people! Really? You don’t? Well I’ll clue you in. It’s time your weekly dose of SHIMMER goodness. Every weekend, I’ll be bringing you profiles on the hard hitting ladies of SHIMMER. Everyone from the major players like MsChif to the up and coming rookies like Ashley Lane and Portia Perez. So lets get to the good stuff, guys.

Name: MsChif

Age: Unknown

Entrance Theme: “The Pagan Swords Of Legend” by Hecate Enthroned

Associates: Cheerleader Melissa; Daffney

Finisher(s): Code Green; Desecrator; Obliterator

Accomplishments: ChickFight IV Winner; GCW Light Heavyweight Champion (1 Time); SHIMMER Women Athletes Champion (1 Time, current); Ranked #5 on the PWI Female 50

This week’s SHIMMER Spotlight is dedicated to the queen of the hill, current SHIMMER Women Athletes Champion, MsChif. The veridian maned brawler has fought her way up from obcsurity in the indies to become one of the most critically acclaimed athletes in women’s wrestling today.

Not much is known about MsChif’s life prior to her career in pro wrestling. She originally debuted in Gateway Championship Wrestling, feuding with the likes of Daizee Haze and Nikki Strychnine (which was voted the feud of the year by the promotion). She even managed to win the GCW Light Heavyweight Championship and defended it against Evan Bourne among others.

After leaving GCW, MsChif took to IWA Mid-South to make a name for herself. She rekindled her feud with Daizee Haze, while starting new ones with Mercedes Martinez and Mickie “Moose” Knuckles. As a member of IWA, MsChif picked up several titles, not all exclusive to women. But her big break came in 2005, when she joined the ranks of SHIMMER.

In MsChif’s SHIMMER debut, she took on fan favorite Cheerleader Melissa, and gained a upset victory. This match would be the catalyst to SHIMMER’s most notable feud to date. In Volume 2 of SHIMMER, MsChif lost to Beth Phoenix and during her match on Volume 3 against Lexie Fyfe, Melissa Came to ringside and distracted the diabolical mistress. The two went on to feud for the several volumes, participating in numerous SHIMMER firsts: First Hardcore Match, First Last Woman Standing Match and First Falls Count Anywhere Match. However, MsChif and Melissa made amend to take on The International Homewrecking Crew, forming a tandem known playfully by SHIMMER fans as MelisChif.

When the tournament to name the first ever SHIMMER champion was announced, MsChif was definitely a favorite to win. MsChif won her first tournament match, defeating Lexie Fyfe but lost her semi-final match to relative newcomer Sarah Stock. After a picking up a tag team win against Allison Danger and then champion, Sara Del Rey, MsChif was granted a title match against DelRey in which she became the second ever SHIMMER Champion. She has since defended her title against DelRey, as well as Mercedes Martinez and Jetta. She has also taken to defending her SHIMMER title in big brother promotion, Ring Of Honor in SHIMMER’s off season.

If I had to pick between TNA and WWE for MsChif, I would definately pick TNA where her athletic skills and unique looks would be both welcome and appreciated. However, according to Pro Wrestling Illustrated, MsChif has been named as a “must-sign” by WWE and TNA scout. Alas, only time will tell. Here’s a few vids of  ‘Your Soul’s Tormentor’ to get you familiar. Enjoy!
