Systematic Breakdown of Survivor Series

9

The phrase ‘match of the year candidate’ has been thrown around in regards to last night’s Divas traditional Survivor Series elimination match. But it’s time for Diva Dirt to weigh in… was the Raw vs SmackDown match really that good? I would say while it was not the most technical match, it was a lot of fun to watch and for that reason I too, would consider this a potential match of the year candidate.

This match has been a dream match for me for a while now, I really wanted to see the Divas get the traditional elimination treatment and finally that became a reality. I didn’t think it would happen, I never thought WWE would give the Divas enough time on the card to have an elimination match but they finally did. And my verdict is that it turned out really well, it was fun, fast-paced and the fans were into it. I would definitely like to see this become a permanent fixture to Survivor Series each and every year. It doesn’t need to be Raw vs SmackDown every year (maybe heels vs faces or team captains picking their Divas), but I definitely think that the risk paid off and WWE should treat this as a guinea pig for future Survivor Series pay per views.

Anyway, the match got a good 10 minutes which is about the most I thought the Divas would get. I feel it could have benefited from more time, as eliminations occured far too often whereas with the men’s matches, they are sporadic. However, given the time they had that was to be expected. The real shocker here is some of the Divas who were eliminated early on: Kelly Kelly was the second Diva to be eliminated and SmackDown’s team captain, Michelle McCool was third. I’m not sure what happened there given their strong, prominent roles on television. Meanwhile Jillian lasts almost the entire match? Okay!

The match started out very strongly, Beth vs Michelle was good stuff, they had great chemistry and were really going at it. Beth then did some good moves with Maria but here’s where things began to go downhill for a moment: Kelly got tagged in. Kelly vs Maria? The next minute or so seemed to plod along as Kelly and Maria stumbled around the ring, sure they’ve improved but pitting them against each other showed just how green they really are. Thankfully, Victoria tagged in and order was restored. The match livened up as Mickie tagged in and here came one of my favourite parts of the match: Michelle and Mickie. They shared a really great chemistry, great athleticism and it really whet my appetite to one day see them go at it one-on-one. The prospect of that match is very appealing to me now.

If you ask me, Candice was the weakest link of either teams last night during her part of the match with Natalya. She looked hesitant and slow in the ring. Natalya got a great reaction from locking in the Sharpshooter, that was fun to see. The MVP of the night has to go to Maryse, her cockiness and arrogance really made this match. From fighting with her own team mate to standing up to Beth Phoenix, Maryse was on fine form and I really hope that come Tuesday night’s SmackDown tapings she’s put back in the forefront of the Divas Championship picture. She really shone in this match. Beth wins to the shock of no one…

I think it’s a real testament to SmackDown that there was interplay between their Divas, even though they lost the match. They managed to play up on storylines such as the hate between Michelle and Maryse as well as the ‘rivalry’ between Michelle and Maria. Meanwhile Raw had no story to tell except shock horror, Beth is the strong, dominant Glamazon. SmackDown are the real winners here, they have come out of this pay per view with fuel to add to storylines come this week’s SmackDown.

I definitely think this was a risk worth taking, it showed that the elimination match for the Divas can work and I hope this is the start of a yearly tradition. The crowd seemed as into the end of this match as they did the men’s matches, which is surely a good sign.

27

For the first time ever, the Divas get the Survivor Series elimination match treatment. It’s shaped up to be a doozy, Raw vs SmackDown. Team captain and Women’s Champion, Beth Phoenix heads up the Raw side which consists of Candice, Jillian, Kelly Kelly and Mickie James. Meanwhile, SmackDown’s team is captained by the Divas Champion, Michelle McCool with her team mates Maria, Maryse, Natalya and Victoria.

So, the big question is whho will be the last brand standing? Raw or SmackDown? Over the last year, Raw and SmackDown have managed to even themselves up in terms of talent, so this one is a close call. Who do you think will be the last brand standing? Vote now!

Divas Lay SmackDown on Muscle and Fitness

18

In what is possibly one of the hottest photoshoots of the year, three of SmackDown’s sexiest Divas appear in the January issue of Muscle and Fitness magazine, as we told you yesterday. And now we have the scans to prove it! Thanks once again to Rob!

Check out the scans below. Unfortunately, Rob’s scanner gave out before he could scan Eve’s pictures. If anyone can send them along, feel free to do so! What do you think of the shoot? Let us know in the comments!

EDIT: Thanks to Rico, we now have Eve’s pictures from the magazine! They can be found at the end of the gallery (the last two pictures).

And If You Look to Your Left, You’ll Spot the Elusive Green Tiger

18

Maria‘s tights have always been a sight to behold – bright, bold, and sometimes head-scratching. This is one of the latter. Her latest photoshoot, “Green Goddess” shows her in a green, tiger-print ensemble that really catches my eye, but not in a good way. The shiny shade of green is sort of putrid, and the random tiger print isn’t befitting to it. Honestly, the whole thing looks like something spit out of a music videos from the 80’s. It’s not all bad, though – I love the different selection of poses. It all looks very superhero-esque, with the windblown hair and statuesque stances. In that respect, I really like the shoot. The main drawback is the outfit, and unfortunately, it’s a pretty big one.

Mystery Solved: Eve, Maryse & Michelle for Muscle and Fitness

4

Remember this cryptic post from a month or so back? Well the mystery has been revealed! Reader, Rob e-mailed to let us know that SmackDown Divas Eve, Maryse and Michelle McCool are featured in the latest issue of Muscle and Fitness magazine. Rob adds that each Diva has her own two-page photo spread.

If anyone can send along scans, drop us a line at the usual e-mail address.

Trish’s Fighting Words for Beth & Natalya

14

Despite being two years retired, Trish Stratus can’t help but check in with her alma mater, the WWE, every now and again. This time in an interview with WWE.com, she talks about her travel series Stratusphere. However, more interestingly she mentions two tough Divas who joined the Divas lockerroom since she departed in ’06.

As for plans to return to the ring, Stratus doesn’t plan to shtut the door on that idea any time soon.

“I’ve heard that Beth Phoenix and this new Diva Natalya have talked [trash] about me,” says Stratus with a gleam in her penetrating eyes. “I’ve said it before, but if they ever decided to call me out, I wouldn’t hesitate to step into the ring.”

If you ask me, Beth is kind of overrated. It’s Trish vs Natalya that I really want to see. Especially given their Canadian roots, being the top Canadian Diva is pretty much a birth-right for Natalya given her family lineage however Trish is almost like the People’s Princess. It would make one hell of a match and/or storyline.

(S)he Was Turned to Steel in the Great Magnetic Field

1

Okay, so Lilian Garcia‘s new photoshoot may be called “Pretty in Platinum”, but I’m more intrigued by her steely surroundings. Her rock-n-roll ensemble, draping her in dark shades of black and gray, is complimented by the steel walls and grommets making up the background. If there was a more appropriate setting for her “rocker” image, I don’t know what it is. It sort of reminds me of Lita‘s “Divas Do New York” photoshoot where she was in this industrialized-looking setting, looking all grungy. She and Lilian are going for a similar look (although Lita’s more of the “punk” variety while Lilian’s more “glam”), so I think it’s a fair comparison. Though, she may be a bit too smiley. It’s hard to project a “tough” look when grinning from ear to ear, unless you’re looking manic while doing so (hey, Natalya).

Apparently, Glasses Are the Great Equalizer

2

I know people still have Presidential election fever (I mean, it ended only 2 weeks ago), but what’s with this comparison? Apparently folks think that because Stephanie McMahon has begun to wear glasses on television (while not wearing them offscreen), she’s going for a Sarah Palin look. Perhaps she’s going the Tina Fey route? Either way, I’m not buying it. It’s not even a close comparison. I guess from now on, no women can wear glasses without being Sarah Palin impersonators..

What do you think – do you buy into this rumor? Does Stephanie look suspiciously like the Governor of Alaska? Do the election-y thing and cast your vote below.

Brie & Nikki Pose Pretty in Pink

5

Diva duo photoshoots are often pretty interesting, and Brie & Nikki Bella‘s second dual photoshoot “Pair in Pink”, is still pretty cool. However, it’s easy to tell that this could get old pretty quick. I mean, how much more can you do other than the back-to-back pose? Granted, they could always get a bit more creative with it, but I hope they start to give each girl their own photoshoots. I’d love for them to show their individuality and uniqueness rather than just selling them as a package deal. As a twin myself, I’m probably more inclined to be sensitive to the “twin individualism” thing. It’s definitely a pet peeve. :P Perhaps we could do a post highlighting Nikki & Bella’s differences. For me, it’s all in the eyes. But that’s for another day..

Welcome Back Alicia… I Think

13

From working in the biggest storyline on SmackDown and making a cameo in the main event of Great American Bash to this? Welcome back Alicia Fox! Alicia made her return to the WWE on last night’s edition of ECW and well, just watch and see…

So, we’ll see you in an actual wrestling match in about a year’s time? Okay, see you then…

Layla, Where You At?

27

I need a Layla in here, where she at, where she at? I don’t mean to alarm you but I feel a collective nervous breakdown coming on… I didn’t think much of Layla’s absence from Raw last night but it seems to be a bigger talking point on the Internet than one would think. In fact, some are speculating that she may have been… *Gasp* I can’t even bring myself to say it.

Layla wasn’t seen with her beau, William Regal last night nor was she mentioned in the same breath as the new Intercontinental Champion on commentary. I’m truly hoping there’s not more to the story and my initial reaction was correct, but it seems a little suspect that Michael Cole and The King didn’t even mention her in relation to Regal. With the recent cost-cutting measures, one could speculate.

If Layla were… you know… I think it’d be the most devastating loss to the women’s division in quite some time. The London Diva is so unique in so many ways and a real dark horse, I feel like she could be a Melina in training. A Diva who has the look, the personality and the skills. For now, I wait with baited breath and hope for the best. Join me, won’t you?

Yes, I’ve Lost My Miiinnndddd

5

It looks like Victoria‘s got some major Dissociative Identity Disorder going on, what with the myriad of style choices in her new photoshoot, “Red-dy or Not”. From the punky red streaks in her hair and the Vegas showgirl-style bra to the business-y vest and the bold spiderweb necklace, everything clashes. I know most of us are fond of her “psycho” phase, but it doesn’t work here, I’ve gotta say. But hell, if it meant she could pick up that gimmick again, I’m all for it. I just might have to think twice about checking out her photoshoots..

Random: Survival of the ?

7

You’re forgiven if you mistakenly read that as ‘Survival of the Sluttiest’, because that’s exactly what happened to me when I glanced over WWE.com. I nearly spat out my drink, before I took a second look. Maybe the WWE.com tech geeks are purposely trying to confuse us lol? Subliminal messages!

Hallelujah! Raw vs SmackDown Announced!

21

This is what the parting of the red sea must have felt like, because my dreams have come true! There will be a Raw vs SmackDown Divas match at Survivor Series! Eek! And better yet, WWE is going all out and making it a traditional elminination match as opposed to the usual ‘one fall’ fare.

And if you ask me, the teams are right on the money. I’m glad they stuck to the Survivor Series-style teams with 5 Divas on each side rather than throwing in the Bellas, Katie Lea and Layla for the sake of it. Sucks for them but oh well. I gots to say, I’m pretty freakin’ excited for this pay per view now!

To Survive or Not to Survive?

31

Eleventh hour much? I’m getting a little anxious as WWE is still yet to announce a Divas match for the Survivor Series this Sunday. After a crappy showing at Cyber Sunday, I don’t want to be cheated out of a Divas match at one of the biggest events of the year! It looked as though the Divas Championship match would take place at the pay per view before WWE shotgunned it to last week’s Friday Night SmackDown.

Given the way that match ended (and how short it was), I think the book has been left open for a rematch. Though SmackDown has already taped it’s show for this week and no such announcement was made (though this can be edited in or announced on WWE.com). Another option would be to make a Women’s Championship match tonight on Raw. But personally, I’ve been hoping for a Raw vs SmackDown elimination match for the longest time with Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool as team captains.

Style Showdown: Baby-Faced

14

Welcome back to the Style Showdown! This is the contest where we put our favourite Divas and Knockouts up against each other, not in the ring, but in a battle of who looks better!

Last time on the Style Showdown: would-be Cyber Sunday opponents Layla and Mickie James faced off, something they didn’t do at the PPV. In this battle of missed opportunity, Layla won, gaining 166 votes while Mickie only had 139 – close but no cigar.

This week, we’re taking a look at two of the leading Diva babyfaces in the WWE – Candice Michelle and Maria. On their respective brands, these Divas are many times the go-to girls for mass fan appreciation and the filling of a good-girl role. They sure get the cheers, but who gets your vote – Candice in her mellow yellow, or Maria in her electric purple? Check out their photoshoots below, judge their styles in those shoots, and cast your vote!

SmackDown Watch: November 14, 2008

Maria finally gets her Divas Championship title shot this week, in a match with Michelle McCool. Watch below:

DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP: MARIA VS MICHELLE MCCOOL (C)

I have to say, I’m really disappointed. The match was about two and a half minutes long. You’d think they’d give a title match a little more time, hell Brie and Victoria got way more time last week. More thoughts will be available in the SmackDown Redux.

House Show Watch: Beth Phoenix vs Candice

6

In a rare treat, I managed to find this video on YouTube while searching for something else! Some fan was nice enough to record and post a match between Beth Phoenix and Candice from last night’s (Nov. 13) house show in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Kelly Kelly served as special guest referee and Mickie James as guest time keeper. Check it out below:

Diva Dirt Scoops Melina’s In-Ring Return Pictures

As we reported earlier today, the A-List Diva Melina made her in-ring return last night at an FCW show. After a long drawnout bidding war with the likes of People and Us Weekly, we managed to snag the first look at Melina’s return… hurrah! In fact we paid even more than Brangelina got paid for their baby pics…

Okay not really, but that is just an example of what a great character Melina is – we can come up with all sorts of material for her! Our partner forum had these candids up, which we thought we’d share with you. Melina looks great, I’m so looking forward to her television return. As I was saying, Melina has such a great character and not since Trish Stratus has a Diva been so marketable. Her whole ‘A-List Diva’ gimmick means they can do so much for her return. I picture ‘returning soon’ promos on Raw, but to tie in with her gimmick instead of saying ‘returning soon’, they could call it a ‘comeback’. And you know how at the end of those promos you have like ‘John Cena returning soon’, I would love to see a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with Melina’s name on it.

My mind has been wondering all day, just shows how excited I am! However, I am sort of worried. With Melina’s return from injury and Gail Kim set to make a comeback of her own, I think one of the Divas will end up drawing the short straw. I imagine their TV returns will happen quite near to each other (maybe weeks, maybe a month) but I don’t see both Divas getting a big push upon their returns. And I can almost guarantee that there’s no way both will be brought in to Raw – which, let’s face it, is where they deserve to be.

I do hope Melina comes back as a face and is able to restart her feud with Beth, but I could also see WWE wiping the slate clean and having her come back as a heel. If she does come back as a heel, I’d love to see a more amped up gimmick – showing more ‘Hollywood attitude’, maybe bringing up one of the guys from FCW to be her bodyguard or something. Anyhoo, enough of me…

In My Dreams, You Told Me..

4

It may be the lack of sleep talking, but Jillian Hall‘s new photoshoot “Dream of Jillian” is making me a little cathartic. It’s pretty dull, to put it simply. Even the tacky top isn’t catching my eye. It’s not that bad – it’s better than most of her recent efforts, for sure – but I’m just not feeling it. It kind of looks like they hammered this out in 5 minutes, with the lackluster posing and the bland background. That’s not to say she isn’t putting out the effort because if she wasn’t, we’d be seeing a helluva lot more trout pout, and it looks like that’s (thankfully) gone out to sea.

(Oh, and to keep the string of song title references in the “Eye Candy” posts going, I’ve used one in the post’s title. 500 cool points goes to anyone who can recognize it.)

Trish Stratus Update: Emmy Nominated (Kinda), MySpace

3

Quite possibly the biggest Diva of all time, two years after her retirement, Trish Stratus has finally joined MySpace! Trish’s page can be found at myspace.com/trishstratus.

As well as joining MySpace, Trish has been nominated for an Emmy… kinda. Trish is up for the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy, a Gemini Award! Trish is under the category of Hottest Canadian Female TV Star (you don’t see that at the Emmys!) so click here and vote for her. She faces some stiff competition from Tricia Helfer, who is pretty smokin’ herself. The former Women’s Champion’s Canadian travel series, Stratusphere has been a rip-roaring success for the T+E, so congratulations Trish on a great 2008.

Melina Returns to the Ring!

8

Bleak weather, good news… Melina‘s back in the ring! The Diva who was injured in June on Raw, made her in-ring return at an FCW show last night. Melina teamed up with Tyler Reks against Alicia Fox and Jake Gabriel. Hopefully this is a sign that her WWE return won’t be too far off, though as we’ve learned from Candice, it’s best to take to your time with these things. Hopefully Melina’ll be back on Raw in January!

And it Was Called Mellow

13

In one of the more aptly-named photoshoots in recent memory, Candice Michelle has gone “Mellow”, sporting a pretty shade of yellow and posing in (perhaps uncharacteristically) low-key ways. She looks quite good, but her hair at times looks a bit Marla Singer-ish. (eh, Fight Club is on tv. MUST…WATCH…) You know, unruly. But all-in-all, the more natural look benefits her greatly. As long as she doesn’t start hanging around Paper Street (sorry, another Fight Club reference), she should be a-okay.

Celebrity Diva Search: Tyra Banks

9

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s looked at a celebrity on TV or in a music video and thought, “Damn she would make a great WWE Diva.” Well with Celebrity Diva Search, we aim to share with you one celebrity each week, who we think has the Diva look and could kick ass too.

She is the multi-millionaire supermodel turned talk show host. The first ever black model to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, Tyra Banks has walked runways all across the world before retiring from the modelling industry. Now she is the Emmy award-winning host of The Tyra Banks Show as well as hosting and producing, America’s Next Top Model. Tyra also coined the term ‘fierce’.

Why she’d make a great Diva
With her supermodel looks, photoshoots and looking hot on a weekly basis comes second nature to Tyra. But what we really love her for is for her passion and personality that she shows on Top Model. Tyra often does quirky and crazy things on the show which would make for a great character on either Raw or SmackDown. She may be a supermodel but she’s also got attitude, just ask some of the girls who’ve crossed her on ANTM.

Character Traits
As a former supermodel, she would definitely play into the stereotype of a snobby heel thinking she’s better than all the other Divas and too good for the men. But once she gets in the ring, she’s full of cocky attitude and ready to cut a bitch down.

Nickname
“America’s Next Top Diva”, Tyra Banks

Entrance Music
“Shake Ya Body” by herself!

Finishing Move
“Full Fierce” (spear)
