Referee fined after WrestleMania main event finish

WrestleMania 35 is over and the first-ever women’s main event is now in the history books. “Becky 2 Belts” defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair via pinfall, becoming both the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Champion.

Various rumors and speculation about the finish of the match have surfaced since Sunday night. The winning pin wasn’t executed well and Rousey’s shoulders weren’t down for the count of three. The live audience didn’t even realize Lynch won until the ring announcer declared her the winner moments later.

According to an exclusive report by Fightful, the match was supposed to end with the crucifix pin on Rousey, but WWE referees have been instructed to treat the pins as a shoot. Since Rousey did not have her shoulders down for the three count, referee Rod Zapata shouldn’t have made the count.

Zapata garnered heat backstage from the incident, as well as a fine for an undisclosed amount for the misstep. Fightul reported that McMahon told the ref that he should have waited until Rousey’s shoulders were down to do the count of three. If any of the talent in the ring stumbled through the finish, it would be their error.

Supposedly, Rousey was upset, but it’s unclear if it was because of the botched finish or the injury she sustained during the match. Rousey, showed up to Raw this week wearing a brace as a result of a reportedly broken hand.

Regardless of the finish, the women still etched their names in history. Rousey appears to be taking some time off from WWE and as we saw this week, The Man’s next feud will be with Lacey Evans.
