The first Hell in a Cell event took place in 2009 and the first-ever Divas match to take place at the event was for the Divas Championship.
Mickie James was the champion heading in and she was challenged by Alicia Fox. Fox had earned this championship opportunity by defeating Gail Kim several weeks beforehand. She also held a victory over James when she pinned her in a tag team bout. This was also Fox’s first singles match on a pay-per-view.
The final moments of the match did give Fox a near fall with a Northern Lights Suplex out of the corner but it would be James that planted her DDT to get the victory and retain. Fox would later challenge Melina for the title in November of the same year and wasn’t able to win the title once again.
The gold would eventually go around the waist of Fox in June 2010 when she pinned Maryse in a Fatal 4-Way that also involved Gail Kim and then-champion Eve Torres.
