REWIND: Natalya vs. Charlotte at the first ever TakeOver event seven years ago

Today on May 29, the first TakeOver event for NXT took place seven years ago in 2014. On that card was a match for the vacant NXT Women’s Championship. Once Paige moved to the main roster and won the Divas Championship she had to relinquish the NXT title.

This match was the final match of an eight woman tournament. Natalya defeated Layla in the first round and Sasha Banks in the second. Charlotte took out Emma in round one followed by Alexa Bliss.

After Natalya tried to make Charlotte tap out in the Sharpshooter, Charlotte would then use Natalya’s own submission maneuver against her. Once Natalya broke free and tried to get Charlotte in the Sharpshooter one more time it was countered and Charlotte hit Natural Selection.

Charlotte picked up the win and her first championship. She went on to hold the title for 258-days until she lost it in a Fatal 4-way to Sasha Banks. That match took place at TakeOver: Rival and was in itself a memorable match that also involved Becky Lynch and Bayley.

Both Natalya and Flair commented on this memory today on their social media accounts.

Natalya vs. Charlotte was the first women’s match on a TakeOver event and became the first of many memorable matches in NXT’s history.
