The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships often take a backseat and over the past year it has become more apparent.
The lack of title defenses and the complete absence of tag teams that have lasted past being champions are just some of the reasons why the titles aren’t being looked at in a serious manner.
In fact, every team that has held the gold is no longer still together (regardless of the reason) and the last two champions, Natalya & Tamina and Nikki A.S.H & Rhea Ripley, who have won the titles in the past year have parted ways. The current champions, Queen Zelina & Carmella, are even hinting at a breakup if they were to drop the belts at the Show of Shows.
The titles have not been defended on a pay-per-view event since last year’s WrestleMania despite the gold changing hands on three different occasions. Currently, the championships are set to be defended in a Triple Threat with possibly another team being added to the match for the second night of WrestleMania. Rhea Ripley is no longer partnered with Nikki A.S.H. but she still wants to be at the top of the tag team division.
One of the teams that have been added, is the newly formed team of Ripley and Liv Morgan. While speaking with Under the Ring, despite being a huge fan of tag team wrestling, Ripley is aware of how the championships are looked down upon.
While speaking on the importance of the upcoming tag team title match at WrestleMania, “It’s very important. The Women’s Tag Team Championships, they sort of get looked down upon by a lot of people, I see it on social media all the time. I get it, we don’t really get good positions on the show and a lot of matches are very very quick, so it’s important to put it on WrestleMania and remind everyone exactly what we can do and how much these titles do truly mean. I love the tag titles, I love tag wrestling, I love everything about it. We just have to remind everyone how much they love it as well. That’s what we’re trying to do.” [transcription credit – Fightful]
Currently, the match at WrestleMania also involves Sasha Banks & Naomi in the Triple Threat. If Ripley & Morgan were to win, it would make Ripley a two-time tag team champion, and Morgan winning her first gold in WWE. Whereas if Banks & Naomi take the prize, Banks would become a three-time tag champ, and Naomi winning her first tag title.
