Ric Flair has spoken out on the controversial angle that closed Monday night’s Raw, which saw Paige invoke the memory of his late son Reid Flair during a Divas Title match contract signing with Charlotte.
On his WOOOOO! Nation podcast, Ric revealed that he was not forewarned about that angle and admitted to crying while watching it.
The WWE Hall of Famer also expressed his belief that Charlotte wouldn’t have felt comfortable vetoing the mention of Reid if she had wanted to:
“Obviously I have an opinion, but I’m afraid to voice it because I don’t want anything to affect Ashley’s career. I know that Hunter and Stephanie and Michael Hayes have her back. I don’t think she feels she’s comfortable enough to say ‘no’ to anything yet, she’s only been up there three-months.”
“It’s a pressure cooker, and a tough spot to be in. If you’re asked to do something, that’s pretty much the way things operate up there. Everybody walks on pins and needles. Just because you’re the champ, doesn’t mean you say no. It’s a very sensitive issue, it’s very new. I know her mom is on fire. I’m not going out on a limb to say what I think.”
“I don’t think that it would have made any difference. If they ask you to do something, what is she going to say? ‘No, I quit?'”
Ric also expressed his belief that the angle will be “old news” by the time Survivor Series rolls around this Sunday.
This follows the equally public reaction from Charlotte and Reid’s mother Elizabeth. In a tweet posted early Tuesday morning, she called the segment disgusting and disrespectful:
@WWE @StephMcMahon @VinceMcMahon @TripleH WWEWriters really, that lazy! #CheapHeat #disgusting
#disrespectful #cruel #sad ?#RawGreenville
