Seven Years Later: Stephanie McMahon Announces First Women’s Royal Rumble

Times started to change for the women of WWE in 2016. They were no longer Divas (despite nothing being wrong with that), but equal to their male counterparts – simply going by WWE Superstars.

With this change came women participating in stipulation and specialty matches, main eventing, and doing things that were once only entertained by the men. This continues with the announcement of the very first Women’s Royal Rumble.

On Dec. 18 in 2017, Stephanie McMahon would announce the first women’s rumble match. With about 10 women standing in the ring with her, she mentioned how far the women have come, especially it the few years prior. They turned a women’s revolution into a women’s evolution. Giving the women another moment they can bask in.

Since then, the Women’s Royal Rumble has occurred annually. There have been seven women to win the most popular match on the wrestling calendar and go on to participate at WrestleMania. As the year’s have past, the legends and NXT Superstars have helped fill the 30 spots. But now, even with surprises entering, the women’s division keeps growing and growing.

The 2025 Women’s Royal Rumble is set to take place on Feb. 1. Which woman will join previous winners – Asuka, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Bianca Belair, Ronda Rousey, Rhea Ripley, and Bayley in the history books? Will we get a second time winner?
