Shirai/Stark retain NXT tag titles; Gonzalez vs. Monet set for Sept. 14

This week’s NXT continued to have women representation all over the program. Three women’s matches including the in-ring debut of Mei Ying, a few new names appeared, a sneak attack by Mandy Rose and crew. and the last time we will see InDex before they become a married couple.

The match results from the Sept. 7 episode of NXT are as follows:

Kay Lee Ray defeated Ember Moon

NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Match

Io Shirai & Zoey Stark (c) defeated Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter

Mei Ying defeated Virginia Ferry

This first match of the night had Ember Moon take on the newcomer to the NXT US brand, Kay Lee Ray. Moon would have no easy task as Ray is a former and longest reigning NXT UK Women’s Champion.

In the final moments of a very competitive match, Ray goes for a pin attempt on Moon after diving off the top turnbuckle but Moon kicks out at two. Gasping for air at this point, Moon gets back on her feet and delivers an overhead powerbomb onto the former NXT UK Women’s Champion. Ray kicks out much to the shock of Moon and the fans. Ray ends up getting the win after delivering a Gory Bomb.

In a backstage interview later in the night, Moon is quite upset at her loss. In fact, she is upset how things have been going for her. She lost the tag titles, lost her tag team partner to SmackDown and hasn’t been able to pick up wins. She feels something has to change. What is next for Ember?

Meanwhile, Kay Lee Ray is ready to got to the top.

The NXT Women’s Championship will be defended next week as Franky Monet has been granted a championship match against Raquel Gonzalez. Robert Stone delivered the good news to Monet and Jessi Kamea and the three celebrated backstage about the opportunity. Monet is elated that she will be the talk of next week instead of the InDex Wedding.

In another competitive match of the night, Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter attempted to win their first gold in NXT. Unfortunately for them, the champs Io Shirai and Zoey Stark were finally able to get on the same page as one another. The tag team champs, have been far from friends since winning the championships and this showed throughout most of the match.

In the final moments of the match to retain the titles, Stark hits a big knee to Catanzaro which allows Shirai to execute the moonsault for the victory.

Post match, Catanzaro & Carter made their way up to the ramp to the stage as the champions celebrate their win in the ring. A surprise attack by Mandy Rose, Jacy Jayne, and Gigi Dolin took place as they jump Team Ninja from behind. Rose was sporting a face mask following last weeks count out loss to Sarray. Sarray had kicked Rose in the face leading to that result.

Lastly, as far as matches go, we saw the in-ring debut of Mei Ying. The powerful entity took out Virginia Ferry (The Dream Girl Ellie) in less than a minute.

Other moments on the show for the women included Elektra Lopez helping out her Legado del Fantasma teammate as she delivered a huge body slam to Carmelo Hayes in his match against Santos Escobar. This took place on the outside while the referee was not looking. Lopez would then put back on her coat after the delivery as if this was an every day occurrence. B-Fab and Hit Row respond to this, and although it wasn’t announced, B-Fab vs. Elektra has to be coming shortly.

The bachelorette and bachelor parties took place this week for InDex as Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis’ wedding is next week. Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano are seen finally accepting Lumis and this marriage to be. In the bachelorette segment, Hartwell is seen introducing her best friend, Steph De Lander who now goes by the name Persia.
