A wrestling veteran and highly respected talent Sumie Sakai will be having her last match on Jan. 11 at NJPW’s Battle in the Valley. The match will be a six person tag team bout. She will be retiring at the age of 53 and has been in the ring since 1997.
Currently, the two team members for Sakai have not been confirmed yet, but we have two of her three opponents. They have been confirmed as Hiromu Takahashi and Mayu Iwatani.
Sakai has worked with a number of Japanese and United States promotions. She was the first ever woman to win the Women of Honor Championship for ROH. A championship which was retired after nearly two years before the current one was created.
Sakai also participated in MMA and grew up practicing Judo. She walked away with two wins out of seven, one being a no contest in MMA.
