6. Team Blackheart vs Team LeRae – NXT TakeOver: WarGames
The second women’s WarGames match was everything it needed to be and so much more. The rivetting and highly-entertaining spectacle offered up another epic encounter inside the ominous structure. Team Blackheart and Team LeRae had some big shoes to fill as last year’s WarGames match proved to be an excellent affair.
It was an epic clash of tremendous chaos and beautiful violence with every single combatant putting on an incredible performance. Io Shirai stole the show when she appeared like a trash can-armoured angel on top of the cage before leaping onto the fighting forces below. It was a star-making effort for Raquel Gonzalez who scored the win for the heel team by pinning the NXT Women’s Champion.
It was a brilliant and crazy massacre involving eight of the best female wrestlers on the planet and was the better of the WarGames matches two years in a row.
5. Kay Lee Ray vs Piper Niven vs Toni Storm – NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II
Another match that took place before the pandemic and therefore has the added bonus of a live crowd. The NXT UK Women’s Championship was on the line in a Triple Threat match between the brand’s top three wrestlers at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool II.
The match saw high-risk moves, fast-paced action and near-falls a plenty in front of a ravenous UK crowd. Lee Ray, Niven and Storm put on a fantastic showing that was easily one of, if not the best match the women of NXT UK have put on since the inception of the brand. The three wrestlers would go at each other full throttle, battling it out to become the queen of NXT UK.
Niven and Storm were excellent, but Lee Ray was on another level. The “Scary Queen of Scots” proved that she was one of the best and most durable heels in the business.
4. Guilia vs Tam Nakano – Stardom Yokohama Cinderella
Giulia and Tam Nakano were locked in a feud to capture the vacant Wonder of STARDOM Championship. This match was their third clash in singles action, and they certainly saved the best for last.
Giulia and Nakano went all out in this fight and held nothing back. The action was brutal and stiff, while the drama and storytelling were intense and captivating. Their passionate hatred for one another shone through with every strike, manoeuvre and authoritative kick out.
Giulia and Nakano are in impeccable form since STARDOM returned and when both fighters are firing on all cylinders, they provide excellent matches such as this.
3. Sasha Banks vs Asuka – SummerSlam
Asuka and Sasha Banks (along with Bayley) had a fantastic feud throughout the summer, which carried the company from the Performance Center era into the Thunderdome and to emphatic encounter to their list at SummerSlam.
This match was another brilliant match in a long line of brilliant matches between these two. The bout was filled with intense action, near falls and great submission sequences, which made for encapsulating viewing. The Boss and The Empress of Tomorrow told an incredible story in the ring as Banks looked to keep hold of the RAW women’s title. At the same time, Asuka fought to establish herself as the rightful champion while the story outside continued the Bayley and Banks breakup.
Two of the best wrestlers in the world at the top of their game with excellent chemistry gave us an enthralling match and one of the best of 2020.
