Becky Lynch wins both championships in the WrestleMania main event.
A truly amazing and historic moment that will be remembered for aeons. Long had it been dreamt that one day women would main event WrestleMania and due to the prominence and popularity of Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey they did just that.
The game-changing main event was month’s if not years in the making. All three superstars had been intertwined in a bitter, passionate and intense feud since SummerSlam 2018 when Lynch turned heel on Charlotte capturing the hearts, minds and imaginations of the fans in the process. This would begin Lynch’s rise to the top of the industry and in doing so, along with Rousey and Flair, would raise the women’s division to the coveted headline spot on the grandest stage of wrestling.
Everything seemed to fall into place and the trio of superstars seemed destined to smash through that glass ceiling. Charlotte Flair with her athleticism, power and name-sake always seemed like the hand-picked, golden girl of WWE that would one-day headline WrestleMania. Ronda Rousey was the UFC megastar that brought mainstream crossover appeal and household name value the company adore. And then there was Becky Lynch. Lynch was the long under-utilized, tenacious underdog that made sure she was going to seize this opportunity no matter what, not even injuries, both legit and kayfabe, and suspensions were going to get in her way.
On route to the biggest moment in WWE women’s wrestling history, Lynch had become the breakout star. The Man gimmick made her the hottest act in the business, number one merch seller, which made the status of the match as the main event undeniable.
The match was announced as the WrestleMania main event in the lead-up to the show and Lynch would take to Twitter to acknowledge the unprecedented honour.
The match was announced, the stage was set and history was to be made.
Becky Lynch would shine in the match and despite the awkward finish, that will no doubt play into her and Rousey’s rematch, she became the winner of the first-ever women’s main event at WrestleMania and the first-ever superstar to win both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships.
All hail Becky 2 Belts.
