Two weeks ago, Alexa Bliss unveiled the Women’s Tag Team Championship belts and announced inaugural champions will be crowned in an Elimination Chamber match. Three teams from Raw and three teams from SmackDown will enter the chamber on Sun., Feb. 17, 2019, in Houston, Texas. Tonight, the qualifying matches began on Monday Night Raw.
Nia Jax and Tamina became the first team to qualify after what was basically a squash match against Alexa Bliss and Mickie James.
Alexa made her in-ring return yesterday in the Women’s Royal Rumble match and she didn’t display any ring rust tonight. She actually showed off some improved offense, but in the end, Jax and Tamina proved to be too much. The Irresistible Force eventually finished the team with a devastating double Samoan Drop.
In the second match, The Riott Squad went on to qualify after beating Natalya and Dana Brooke. Brooke replaced an injured Ember Moon and set up dissension among the pair when she told Nattie that she’s better than her and Moon.
Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan displayed some tandem offense early in the match, but they ended up winning using their usual heel tactics. After Ruby Riott distracted the referee, they quickly took advantage of their lack of communication and Liv rolled Natalya up to pick up the win.
Neither matches were impressive, but both teams could be formidable contenders at Elimination Chamber. The Riott Squad work really well together, while Tamina and Jax will probably be the most physically imposing team in the match.
Next Monday, Sasha Banks and Bayley will take on Alicia Fox and Nikki Cross for the last spot available from Raw. Tomorrow night, there will be qualifying matches to decide the two of the teams from SmackDown.
