Carmella took on Sasha Banks at the Royal Rumble for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Unfortunately for Carmella, she was unable to walk out with the title and although she finished the match strong there was some concern after a suicide dive that was miscalculated.
She appeared later in the night in the Royal Rumble match itself. She spent less than a minute in the Rumble match and was more or less eliminated by her own sommelier as he dropped her after Tamina knocked her off the apron.
Back to the championship match, Carmella did a suicide dive on Banks as Banks was at the bottom of the ramp dealing with Reginald who was just ejected from ringside. The miscalculation then happened and Carmella hit more of the floor face first than she did Banks.
Banks can be seen checking in with Carmella after the spot to make sure she was okay. She appeared to be as she hopped back up to finish the match after that very scary moment.
Corey Graves gave us an update on Carmella on his After the Bell podcast.
“Anyone watching when that dive happened and Carmella went sailing through the bottom rope, and I believe it’s known as a scorpion – that’s what my kids call it when we watch fail videos [and] when somebody’s feet hit the back of their head – it was not a good time.
She landed face-first and I’m pretty sure she kicked herself in the back of the head. She was a little banged up but she’s still alive, she’s still kicking, she’ll be alright.”
The feud between Carmella and Banks has been taking place over the course of several months now. This was the second pay-per-view match between the two and we will have to see if they will end up making it a third or if there is something else in the plans for the both of them. More clarity will likely come during SmackDown tonight.
