NXT Diva Alexa Bliss recently spoke to Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald, filling in fans on her pre-wrestling background, how she earned a WWE tryout, who inspired her in-ring style, the origin of her trademark blue hair and more.
How bodybuilding helped her overcome an eating disorder: “I got into bodybuilding after transitioning from college cheerleading. I wanted to stay active. I had struggled with an eating disorder, so it was a way to gain weight in a healthy way and get my body back into a shape that was functional and healthy, so I ended up competing and fell in love with it and fell in love with the lifestyle.”
Earning a WWE tryout: “I was competing [in bodybuilding], and saw that there was a Diva Search for WWE, and I watched WWE my whole life…I actually made a video and sent it in to WWE.com. I was called back for a tryout, and now I’m here, living the dream.”
Getting inspiration from smaller wrestlers: “I’ve actually studied a lot of Rey Mysterio‘s stuff. I love his work. I am a total fan of the smaller person because that’s what I face every day in the ring.”
Her finisher: “It is called the Sparkle Splash…It’s a finisher off the top rope…It’s a half twist flip.”
NXT trainer Sara Del Rey: “Sara Amato has been amazing. She has helped me from day one. She has been there every step of the way. Any time I have a question, even if it’s about this far-fetched move. When I first came up with the Sparkle Splash, I asked her, ‘Can try this?’, and she was like, ‘Absolutely.’ She will support anything that we wanna try…If we’re stressed about a match, she’s trhere to calm us down…She’s the best coach a Diva could ask for.”
Her blue hair: “I’ve always had crazy colored hair. I used to get in trouble in middle school. I would have pink in my hair and get sent home. I had purple hair when I first came here, then I had red hair and now I have blue. I’ve always loved blue – blue is my favorite color – so I was like, ‘I’m gonna go big and go all blue.’…I didn’t see anybody walking around looking like a blueberry from head to toe, so I thought, I might as well try it.”
