After 2021 Royal Rumble winner Bianca Belair challenged Sasha Banks to a title match at WrestleMania 37, the pair were expected to make history and headline one of the two nights at the biggest pay-per-view of the year. When Belair won the Royal Rumble match it was even said by commentary that she would be main eventing the upcoming event.
However, it appears that WWE may have other plans or at least they haven’t announced who will be main eventing just yet. On the recently released line-up for night one and night two of WrestleMania 37, the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship matches are at the top of the card. Currently, the SmackDown Women’s Championship match is billed beneath Drew McIntyre versus Bobby Lashley on night one.
Fans and fellow WWE Superstars have rallied behind the two women online. The hashtag #MainEventBanksVsBelair to show their support of the pair headlining the show. Multiple stars including former SmackDown Women’s Champion, and rival of both Banks and Belair, Bayley has been using the hashtag. RAW Superstar Mia Yim has also been vocal on Twitter, as well as wrestling legend Alundra Blaze, Mickie James, and Chelsea Green.
Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair deserve to be history-makers
A headline match between Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair would continue to make history. If they were in the main event of WrestleMania 37, they would be the first-ever African American women to do so. Bianca Belair has already made history this year – she was the first African American woman to win the Royal Rumble. They are also the first two black women to have a one-on-one match for a singles title at WrestleMania.
A main event match between Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair would also be the second time that women have ever headlined WrestleMania. The last time that this was done was when Becky Lynch defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 35.
The WWE Women’s Division deserves better
Banks versus Belair would also be a way to work towards rectifying the strange booking that is currently happening in WWE’s women’s division. In 2021, the women of WWE have barely been involved in pay-per-views, and at times have been treated as an afterthought, it seems.
The women have also been subjected to strange interferences and finishes – for example, the Royal Rumble match being interrupted by the 24/7 Championship chase, and Reginald inserting himself into pretty much every important women match somehow.
There hasn’t been a women’s match headlining a pay-per-view in 2021. The last women’s main event was at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, where Io Shirai won the NXT Women’s Championship from Charlotte Flair in a Triple Threat. This was in June 2020.
The last time women main evented a WWE main roster pay-per-view was Money in the Bank in May 2020. This was a shared main event when the women’s and men’s Money in the Bank ladder matches took place simultaneously. The last time women headlined a pay-per-view alone was Elimination Chamber 2020. This took place over a year ago, in March 2020.
Both Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair are top superstars of WWE. They are more than ready to main event WrestleMania 37, and prove their doubters wrong. Do you support #MainEventBanksVsBelair? Comment below and join the conversation.
