This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite was memorable for all of the Full Gear fallout, none of which, unfortunately, included the women’s division.
On this edition, we saw Nyla Rose return in an ok squash match, Allie cut a cringe-worthy promo and Awesome Kong collect another “scalp”. Oh yeah, we saw the AEW Women’s Champion briefly in a segment as one of Kenny’s worried entourage.
I have been very critical of AEW’s booking of their female talent and this episode proved why. Minimal effort was put into this show. No match had been announced leading up to the show and the one we did get made little impact. The divide between the female and male rosters, priority wise is beyond a joke and hugely frustrating. AEW need to add some emphasis to the division to give the division they promised us, you know the one equal to the men.
Anyway, that’s enough moaning from me back to the task at hand.
Winner: Nyla Rose
Nyla came out to a chorus of boos while Dani Jordyn awaited her fate in the ring. Jordyn stood up for herself in the beginning but Nyla overpowered and destroyed her. This brief match existed only to showcase Rose as a destructive monster, which it did. This was a good showing by Rose and one that covered her flaws and extenuated her strengths.
It seems AEW are trying to recapture some of the buzz Nyla a few months back but, despite the good showing I can’t help but feel the bloom is off the rose (see what I did there?)
Loser: Allie
If you cut a promo this bad on live TV you deserve to get scalped on live TV. Allie, like most of the roster, has been criminally underused and deserves much better.
Loser: Awesome Kong
Intriguing on the Full Gear pre-show but lacklustre and sloppy on here. The “horror movie” vibe of it all feels out of place when compared to the direction of the rest of the roster. Yes, we have been asking for more storyline but I’m not sure this is it. Why AEW are pushing two monster heels at the same time is somewhat perplexing and makes both feel rather ineffective.
Final Thoughts:
This was by far the weakest episode of Dynamite for the female roster and that is pretty unforgivable. We’re coming off a really heated PPV that featured an emotionally heavy Women’s title match, yet there was no mention of it at all. All of the focus was on the male roster leaving the single two-minute squash match feel less than an afterthought.
