It’s the last episode of AEW Dynamite before Double or Nothing, AEW’s second PPV of the year, which takes place this Saturday. The card features two women’s matches, the first, Nyla Rose vs. Hikaru Shida for the AEW Women’s Championship and the second being Britt Baker vs. Kris Statlander.
To hype things up for the PPV all four women would be in the ring as Shida and Statlander would take on Rose and Baker in tag team action.
Nyla would enter the ring with Shida’s kendo stick and the action would kick off as Rose would swing it at Shida.
Shida and Rose would fight over the weapon and take out Baker with it. Statlander and Shida would double team Rose with a running bulldog and sumersault senton combination.
Referee Aubry Edwards would take control and offically start the match as Shida and Statlander would continue to work over Rose.
With Rose seemingly incapasitated after taking a big dropkick, Statlander would turn her attentions to her opponant at Double or Nothing, Britt Baker. Statlander would attempt a suicide dive but would be taken out by the sheer power of ‘The Native Beast.’
With Statlander shaken Rose would take control and force her into the corner followed by a big body slam and legdrop.
Rose would drag Statlander to the corner and attempt to tag in Baker who refused urging Rose to continue her offence.
Rose would hit Statlander with a side slam, followed by a body splash into a pin for the first tow-count of the match. Rose would then lock in a dragon sleep but Statlander would force her way out only to meet a big stalling suplex for the efforts.
Baker would refuse a second tag attempt but this time Rose would force a her to enter by grabbing her around throat.
As Baker entered the ring, Statlander would catch her into a small package for the two-count. Baker would bounce back with a barrage of fierce strikes, taking out Statlander.
Statlander would return the favour and take out both Baker and Rose while Shida cheered her on.
Statlander would make the tag and Shida would make a beeline for Rose throwing her into the corner. Shida would add Baker shortly thereafter befroe delivering a big running knee strike.
Shida would take Baker and lay her out the ring apron to smash her prone body with another lifting knee strike.
Back in the ring Shida would hit a suplex for the two-count. Statlander would tag and a double team woudl ensue. Rose would interfere but she would miss her targets and pancake Baker in the corner.
Shida and Statlander would hoist Rose onto their shoulders and toss Rose onto Baker. Statlander would than slam Baker for a two-count.
Rose would tag herself in but Statlander would hit a big slam and tag in Shida who woulf then hit a big missile dropkick followed by running knee strike to the back of the head for another two-count.
The match would become a 2-on-1 as Baker recieved attention from the ringside doctors.
Nyla able to dispose of Statlander smashed Shida with a Beastbomb for the victory.
But the action would’nt end there as instead of celebrating, Rose would grab a table from the underneath the ring. Rose would lay the incapicitated Shida on the table and climb the turnbuckle for the big top rope splash.
Statlander would grab Rose, which allowed Shida to recover and attack Rose before hiiting a huge superplex through the table. Nice.
This is was a good match with some good yet messy action. Baker seemed to damage her right knee resulting from the turnbuckle spot. There is no news as of yet regarding the status of her knee so fingers crossed she ok.
This week Brandi Rhodes announced AEW Heels, a new community for women who love wrestling. After AEW Dynamite it was revealed that the first introduction to AEW Heels would be a Zoom Party lead by Brandi and featuring a number of AEw stars.
See the tweet below for information on how to get involved.
Let’s get to the winners and losers.
Winner: Hikaru Shida
12 weeks on top of the leader board and next up to fight Nyla Rose for the AEW Women’s Championship. Despite taking the pinfall Shida remained strong by planted Rose through the table after the match. Her match at Double or Nothing against Rose has a no disqualifcation, no count-out stipulation attached, which could play in her favour. We can’t wait to find out.
Loser: Britt Baker
Nothing to do with performance just the fact that in the midst of her rise through the division she picks up yet another injury. The spot where her knee buckled looked pretty bad and the part of the leg was limp when the doctors checked her over at ringside. The match was still advertised during the show so we will have wait and see if she is able to perform. We’ll keep you updated.
Final Thoughts
A good match that furthered the story and animosity between Nyla Rose and Shida before their big match. Rose and Shida have a big task on theire hands as it is vital that they make this AEW Women’s Championship match standout. The division has improved in recent months and needs a really strong and exciting title match to solidify that point. Here’s hoping it will do just that.
We’ll be back on Saturday for a Double or Nothing preview and predictions discussion post.
