Winners & Losers: WWE Backlash 06.14.20

WWE Backlash served up two women’s matches for us tonight. The Triple Threat Tag Team Match for the Women’s Tag Team Championships between Sasha Banks and Bayley vs Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross vs The Iconics and the RAW Women’s Championship match that has Asuka taking on Nia Jax.

First match of the night was the women’s tag team championship triple threat match between Bayley and Sasha Banks vs Alex bliss and Nikki Cross vs The IIconics.

Before the match Kayla asks Bayley and Banks if they lose the title tonight will it end their friendship. Both vehemently deny it.

The rule of the match are three women in the ring at once and they can only tag in their tag team partner. Bille Kay, Bayley and Nikki Cross start the match. The three go at it until Kay and Bayley double team Cross before attacking each other.

The fast action ends up with all six women in the ring for a standoff until Bliss, Banks and Royce remain and mix it up. Temporary alliances are ended as quickly as they made as Royce and Banks briefly team up to beat up Bliss before turning on one another.

The action ceases for a moment as another standoff in the ring involving all six women turns into a frantic melee with fists and fury galore.

Bliss, Banks and Royce remain in the ring as Bliss takes control with a big slap to beoth opponants in the corner.

Cross tags in and mixes it up with Kay and Bayley who also enter the ring. Billie and Bayley briefly team up to stomp Cross before turning on each other.

The chaotic environment continues with quick tags, fast action and innovative when Banks and Bayley hit Kay with her own manouvre, a stalling wheelbarrow lift into a knee strike.

Alexa Bliss gets the hot tag and flies about the ring like a woman possessed taking out Bayley and Kay before taking everyone out on the apron.

The action spills to the outside and Royce takes everyone out with a big dive. Back in the ring, The IIconics get their own back on Banks with a stalling wheelbarrow knee strike of their own. They then hit Banks with their finisher but Bliss and Cross break up the pin.

Bliss and Cross hit their finisher on Royce then Bliss hits the Twisted Bliss on Royce but Banks catches Bliss in a pinfall for the sneak win.

Sasha and Bayley retain.

This was a good fun match with loads of hectic action. Everyone looked really good in the match, especially Alexa Bliss, Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, who since returninghave really turned up their performances.

Next we get the RAW Women’s Championship match.

Asuka’s first defence of the title starts off strikes all over Nia’s body and an arm bar attempt. Asuka uses her technical prowess evade Nia’s attacks and tie her up into an Octopus stretch in the middle of the ring.

Nia powers out but Asuka continues to go for the arms. Nia uses her power to take control and toss Asuka across the ring. Asuka won’t stop fighting but Nia slams her into the mat and into a clover lock.

Asuka sinches in a Guillotine choke but Nia powers out with a huge Jackhammer, which Asuka just kicks out of. Asuka fires up with more strikes and a Shining Wizard for a two count.

Nia catches Asuka and plants her with a huge Powerbomb, which Asuka once again just kicks out of.

The action spills outside and Asuka catches Nia into an armbar, Jax slams her into the barricade and they are both counted out. Asuka retains.

A decent match that was pretty much what was expected. Asuka using the speed and skill to attack Nia Jax. While Jax used her power and strength to attack Asuka. The end was very disappointing. No one wants a countout in a title match on a PPV and looks as if this lacking feud isn’t over.

Let’s go to the winners and losers.

Winner: The IIconis

Despite coming away empty-handed from the match, both Peyton Royce and Billie Kay looked really good tonight. They have used their seven-month absence well, put in the work and improved greatly in the ring. Not to say they weren’t impressive before their hiatus, but since returning they certainly have shown a more focused and intense in-ring style. Hopefully this will pay off and we can more serious and effective run for the highly entertainign Aussies.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss put in a performance tonight and showed an energy and intensity that made her really standout in a fast and fun match. The hot tag sequence was a joy to watch and the Twisted Bliss at the end of the match was great. Despite taking the pinfall, Bliss shone tonight.

Loser: The Fans

The RAW Women’s Championship was going really well. Both Asuka and Nia Jax out in good performances and in an intense match up that deserved a clear winner and not a lousey double count out finish. A flat finish such as this does nothing for anybody and comes across as lazy and anticlimatic.

Final Thoughts

This was a second rate show from WWE but at least we got two good matches that were entertaining and chock full of action. Again the finish to the RAW title match was poor but Asuka and Nia put on a really good match. The tag team was really good fun and now we’re getting Bayley and Sasha Banks on NXT this coming Wednesday, which is going to be great to see.
