Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.
Gail Kim
It’s been over six years since Gail Kim became the first ever Knockouts Champion, and she continues to amaze fans on a regular basis. From the moment that the blades swing and her theme song hits over the PA system, you know you are in store for something special, and 2013 may have been one of Kim’s best years ever.
Gail started the year out strong by constantly being included in the Knockouts title hunt, competing in a strong Fatal Four-Way match for the Knockouts Championship on the February 21th episode of Impact and challenging Velvet Sky for the Knockouts Championship at Lockdown. Kim’s ongoing rivalry with referee Taryn Terrell would boil over at the event, leading to Terrell spearing Kim. The feud that had been building for months finally came to a head at Slammiversary in the second Last Knockout Standing Match. The match became an instant classic that earned praise from fans and critics alike, and has been regarded as one of the greatest wrestling matches of 2013. Kim didn’t walk away with the win but she did best Terrell in their number one contender’s ladder match the following match, another contest that received praise.
Kim would gain a new partner at Bound for Glory in the form of Lei’D Tapa. Tapa would help Gail gain her third Knockouts Championship, defeating Brooke and then-champion ODB. Kim would then go on start her own open challenge segment, inviting wrestlers from all over the globe to face her. This would lead to the return of her former BFF, Madison Rayne. While Madison is hot on her trail, Gail Kim has proven time and time again that she has the tools to beat anyone in the Knockouts Division, or any female wrestler worldwide.
