Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2014, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2013.
Mercedes Martinez
Mercedes Martinez has one of the most recognizable names and talking points in indy wrestling for years, and her performances in 2013 setting tongues wagging yet again – all for the right reasons.
Mercedes’s high point of the year came in March, when she defeated Kalamity to become the NCW: Femmes Fatales Champion, becoming the first non-Canadian woman to grab the gold. After winning the championship, trying to keep it was the hardest part, yet hold onto it she did, defending it in Canada and, for the first time ever, in Europe as part of the Bellatrix 7 event.
Her main adversary in 2013 was LuFisto, whom she battled in WSU, NCW:FF and SHIMMER, the latter which has left us the biggest cliffhanger to resolve in 2014. After losing to LuFisto at SHIMMER 59, the pair clashed again at SHIMMER 61 in a Falls Count Anywhere match. Following interference from Cheerleader Melissa (who had defeated Mercedes in March of 2012), Mercedes picked up the win and left arm in arm with the champ. Could this alliance be a regular feature in 2014? Only time will tell. However, whether Mercedes teams up or walks alone, we have no doubt that she will impress.
Come back at the top of every hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2013’s “Women of the Year”.
