Every hour until the clock strikes midnight (Eastern time) and we usher in 2015, Diva Dirt will highlight – in no particular order – the women who made an impact in 2014.
Sexy Star
It has been an absolutely Earth shattering, crazy year for Sexy Star.
First things first though – we would be remiss to neglect mentioning how she ended 2013 in quite the equally huge way! Star had been taking an absence for quite some time after being forced to prematurely end her year and a half long run as Reina de Reinas Champion by vacating the title, leaving many to wonder what the reasoning behind this was and fearing the worst.
In August, however, she seemed to have put all speculation to rest when she posted a photo featuring two tiny little feet, thus signifying she had given birth and become a mother! Good news, indeed.
As we’ve learned more & more over the past few years especially, women in wrestling who become mothers don’t automatically have to call it quits on their career. Just a few short months down the road, Sexy Star returned to Asistencia Asesoría y Administración – AAA for short – and participated in a mixed eight-way steel cage Hair vs. Hair match.
Crazy (… and completely badass) right?
She faced off against Mamba, Pimpinella Escarlata, Fabi Apache, Jennifer Blake, Pasión Kristal, Polvo de Estrellas and Taya Valkyrie. In the end, Star got lucky and ended up escaping the cage, as it was Pimpinella who lost out amongst the bunch.
This brings us to 2014, where Star continued her path to glory with a variety of matches for AAA, primarily teaming up in some form with Taya against the likes of Jennifer and Fabi. In April, however, she returned to form in a big way by capturing the promotions World Mixed Tag Team Championship. It was a three way showdown as she and her partner, Pentagon Jr. – representing the recently reformed stable, La Sociedad (The Society) – teamed up to defeat reigning champions, Drago and Fabi Apache, as well as Cuervo and Mari Apache.
This would mark Star’s first reign with the Mixed Tag Team Titles, that of which she and Pentagon Jr. have went on to hold for over 250 days in a row, still going strong to this day.
The following August, alongside Blue Demon Jr., Fenix, Drago and Pentagon Jr., it was announced via press release that Sexy Star would be one of the first five individuals contracted to appear for a new upstart branch of the AAA promotion, Lucha Underground.
Many American fans might have initially written Lucha Underground off as being something they wouldn’t have immediate access to. Sure, it was airing on a network here, but El Rey is brand spanking new, only launching in 2013, and so not too many homes would seem to have it readily available just yet.
Little did they know, though, was just how much Lucha Underground – specifically Sexy Star herself – would make a huge impact in the US upon the shows launch.
Brought in immediately on the debut episode, Star was branded as a woman who wanted to show other females that they can be just as tough and just as physical as any man. Essentially, she wants to show that they are all sexy and they are all a star. The promotion didn’t simply restrict her to only facing off against her own gender… they allowed her to take on everyone in her path!
Sexy Star has given a rebirth to televised intergender wrestling in the United States. She wrestles men, she wrestles women, she wrestles both at the same time and even has passionate rivalries on top of it.
Her notoriety has also skyrocketed to new levels since debuting, with appearances walking star studded carpets at events such as the Univision Premios Awards and Latin Grammys notched under her belt. To boot, she’s also already main evented the program in its first two months of operation, and even received an article on Bitch Magazine about how her time and treatment in Lucha Underground is signifying a turning point in professional wrestling.
Speaking of which, do we also need to mention the chair shot? Because yeah.
It was November 5th, 2014. She had just teamed up with Chavo Guerrero to defeat Son of Havoc and Ivelisse, when later on in the night, Chavo absolutely snapped on Blue Demon Jr. Sexy ran out from the back trying to try and put a stop to it, but ultimately, got drilled with a huge chair shot to the head courtesy of one, Chavo Guerrero.
It was an absolutely huge moment for female wrestling, considering we haven’t seen a televised program allow a woman take a chair shot in quite a long time… much less from a man. It was treated as a big deal by Lucha Underground and they then placed Sexy Star in an immediate feud with Chavo himself, that of which carried on for the remainder of 2014.
There has been absolutely nothing holding Sexy Star back this year, and with both her tag team title win, as well as the major American spotlight she’s received since joining/rocking Lucha Underground with her intergender style of wrestling, we are both proud and humbled to acknowledge her as one of 2014’s Women of the Year.
Come back at the top of every hour to see who else has been crowned one of 2014’s Women of the Year.
