The Kimber Bombs (Kimber Lee & Cherry Bomb)
Together and apart, Cherry Bomb and Kimber Lee’s 2015 was one for the books.
Much has been said about the Kimber Bombs’ dominance this year – from their SHINE Tag Team Titles win to their capturing of the SHIMMER Tag Team Titles – but when you add in their individual accomplishments, there’s no denying that this was the year their viability as wrestling superstars became apparent to all.
It all started at the WSU 8th Anniversary Show, where Kimber and her other tag partner, Annie Social, won the WSU Tag Team Titles, regaining the belts from the team that had won them from them a year prior: the arrogant David Starr and JT Dunn.
One month later, Kimber added the second tag title to her collection, winning the SHINE Tag Team Championship with Cherry at SHINE 25 by defeating veterans Brandi Wine and Malia Hosaka. The Kimber Bombs weren’t satisfied with one set of hardware, though, immediately setting their sights on the one unconquered women’s tag team championship: SHIMMER’s. They began their quest at SHINE 26, battling SHIMMER champs Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa in a Title vs. Title match. That bout would end in a double count out, opening the door for a highly anticipated rematch.
That match came quickly, taking place in April at SHIMMER’s volume 72 tapings. This time, Kimber and Cherry were able to pull out a win, a lungblower/German suplex combo earning them the belts and ending 3G’s mammoth 727-day reign. In just over a month, the Kimber Bombs went from a moderately successful team to the team. Kimber herself practically had a monopoly over the tag team scene, holding the three major tag titles for a run of six months.
If that wasn’t enough, Cherry and Kimber would swiftly collect individual accomplishments as well, Cherry winning the WSU World Title at WSU Power in May and Kimber capturing an astounding three singles belts from June to December: the Legacy Wrestling Women’s Championship, MCW Women’s Championship and CHIKARA Grand Championship all became hers. The latter was heralded as a historic feat, Kimber becoming the first woman to reign as CHIKARA’s Grand Champion.
Cherry Bomb’s shoulder injury in September put a slight damper on the Kimber Bombs’ year, as they were forced to relinquish the SHINE Tag Team Titles. However, Cherry’s ongoing speedy recovery has insured that she’ll hold on to her her other two 2015 gains, remaining the WSU World Champion and keeping SHIMMER Tag Team Championships around the Kimber Bombs’ waists.
When you look back, 2015’s affect on the Kimber Bombs was outstanding: Kimber went from a one-time to seven-time champ, while Cherry went from a three-time to a six-time champ. Taken separately, their singles and tag team accomplishments would have made for banner years. Combined, they ensure that 2015 will be remembered as the year that the Kimber Bombs exploded.
