It wasn’t until 2018 and after the start of the Women’s Revolution that women’s wrestling fans started seeing their favorites in male-dominated match types. For instance, 2018 had the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble, the first-ever women’s Money in the Bank, and also the first-ever women’s Elimination Chamber.
Today, Feb. 18, we will witness the fifth women’s Elimination Chamber bout in the history of the company. The women did not get one in 2021 but would have one each year since Alexa Bliss defended her Raw Women’s Championship in 2018.
I went ahead and rewatched the last four chamber matches (so you don’t have to, unless you want to). Here are how those hold up when watched currently.
4. Elimination Chamber 2020 (Faces Raw Women’s Champion at WrestleMania 36) – Shayna Baszler vs. Liv Morgan vs. Natalya vs. Asuka vs. Ruby Riott vs. Sarah Logan
Winner: Shayna Baszler
This match was booked terribly and it had so much potential to be good. It wasn’t bad for Shayna Baszler, but bad all the way around. WWE has had a hard time booking Baszler throughout her career. She is either running through the whole roster or taking all the pinfalls. There is no middle ground when it comes to her.
With that being said, the “running through the whole roster” is essentially what this chamber match was. Baszler eliminated all five women and most of them in quick fashion, only to go on to Mania and not win the championship from Becky Lynch. It was overall poorly booked all around.
3. Elimination Chamber 2022 (Faces Raw Women’s Champion at WrestleMania 38) – Bianca Belair vs. Doudrop vs. Liv Morgan vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Nikki A.S.H vs. Alexa Bliss
Winner: Bianca Belair
Last year’s Elimination Chamber wasn’t bad…it is only at number three because it does not stand up to the top two. Mostly because the lack of use from the chamber itself was very visible (perhaps due to this taking place in Saudi Arabia). Alexa Bliss did make a return in this match which was good to see after her being out for months. There were some good spots here including the competition of strength between Ripley and Belair. What it comes down to is that the better two-chamber matches just had more going for them and more buzz.
2. Elimination Chamber 2018 (Raw Women’s Championship) – Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Mickie James vs. Sasha Banks vs. Bayley vs. Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville
Winner: Alexa Bliss
The inaugural women’s chamber match ranks number two on this list. This and the top spot chamber match are both very well-produced and top-tier. This one in particular had a lot of story to it heading in. You had Banks and Bayley as best friends, Rose and Deville as best friends, and a good respect level between Bliss and James heading into this match. The match came in wondering if Banks and Bayley would be on the same page based on what happened at the Royal Rumble. And Banks proved they weren’t when she would turn on Bayley in this match as well. Every woman for herself.
This match had good spots for all women and Bliss, Banks, and Bayley used the chamber structure itself really well. Including Bliss’ Twisted Bliss from the top of the pod.
1.Elimination Chamber 2019 (Women’s Tag Team Championships) – Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Fire & Desire vs. Riott Squad vs. Tamina & Nia Jax vs. Fabulous Glow vs. The IIconics
Winners: Sasha Banks & Bayley
This tops the list for me personally. The crowning of the first tag team champs when there were actually tag teams around had such a good feeling. Even Carmella and Naomi which were the makeshift team of this match felt like a good team.
There were a lot of good spots in this match. The IIconics being comedy gold and getting the first elimination. Nia Jax going through the pod leaving Tamina to have to fend for herself.
The final two teams coming down to Sasha & Bayley and Fire & Desire was fun to watch. Personal opinion, Fire & Desire should have won…especially from the moment that Mandy Rose almost got the pin. Banks and Bayley who did fight for the tag titles would eventually hve won them, but it is a crime that Fire & Desire never won tag team gold.
