Writers’ Choice Awards 2014: Best Breakthrough – Charlotte

Diva Dirt presents its fourth annual Writers’ Choice Awards, as decided by the Diva Dirt team. As we come to the end of 2014, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice trophies.

Best Breakthrough: Charlotte

Let’s be honest… has anyone ever transitioned from newbie to stardom as quickly as NXT Women’s Champion, Charlotte?

This time last year, The Dirtiest Diva in the Game had only just had her first match on TV, and then shortly thereafter, turned heel by costing Bayley and aligning herself with The BFFs. But, with where we’re at now… it’s honestly difficult to even think of that being the same woman we see before our very eyes.

When Charlotte originally debuted, many felt she had a ton of potential, however, something just hadn’t clicked into place yet. Unfortunately, soon after the heel turn, she suffered an injury and ended up missing a few months of action before returning to the ring following NXT’s first ever live special, ArRIVAL.

It was then that Charlotte became a new woman. She glammed up her appearance, improved week by week on the microphone, and began showing signs that she was ready to put all that so-called potential to good use. Her improvement was noticeable, but in the trend of most Divas who begin getting better, we sort of expect them to have an okay year, and then really flourish about two or three more years down the road.

Not Charlotte.

To say this – her first full calendar year on TV – was anything less than unbelievable would probably be an understatement. This woman, as strange as it is to really think about it, has only been on TV for about a year and a half. And she only started to really begin settling into her character about ten months ago.

Since then, and not even counting some stellar TV showings against the likes of Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bayley to name a few, Charlotte has put on three live special match of the year candidates — some of which have even been described as being among the best female wrestling bouts in WWE history. At this point, the girl is basically competing with herself in a lot of year end awards for the top performance of 2014.

She has been showered with praise, she has appeared on Raw, she was even given the honor of not only participating in the first ever female main event on an episode of NXT, but also closing out the year by being the final competitor to score a victory on the televised program to boot.

All of it… in one year.

Charlotte has legitimately accomplished more in ten months than a lot of people get to in their entire career. And while there have been a ton of very great breakthrough’s this year, the NXT Women’s Champ has just taken the scene by storm in ways not one person ever thought possible this time last December. She has risen to the occasion time and time again, becoming a staple of not just the NXT women’s division, but NXT as a whole.

Also in the midst of a 200+ day title reign on top of all that, Charlotte seems destined for greatness come 2015. This year, however, she truly defined what it means to breakthrough, rising above all expectations imaginable and turning naysayers into believers.

Stay tuned for more Writers’ Choice Award reveals throughout the day.
